He had a heavy hand in drafting. Research it. He worked hand in hand with Schneider and so far, is following the Seahawks' gameplan step by step. No big free agent splashes, stockpile picks, don't fall for the sexy name (see: Sheldon Richardson pick).
Sexy names will help you get to the Super Bowl. Let's be honest the Seahawks got lucky with some of those picks. From my understands he was the salary cap man in Seattle.
http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...-Manager/7ff1043d-153b-40a3-8559-32ea6f97f5b0 "Idzik has spent the past six seasons as the vice president of football administration with the Seattle Seahawks. There he was actively involved in player evaluations and player negotiations among other responsibilities. Prior to joining the Seahawks, Idzik spent three seasons as senior director of football operations for the Arizona Cardinals, helping to build an NFC championship team. Idzik entered the NFL in 1993 with Tampa Bay and spent 11 years with the Buccaneers, eventually rising to assistant general manager in 2001." With all due respect, I dunno why this guy gets 'rubber stamped' more than Kim Kardashian with a Magnum. From a previous thread ("Matt's Post FA Mock"): Sloup, I'm not sure I get why van der Kamp seems to be far and away THE punter by people here unless they are (like a lot of "draft guru" sites) merely parroting somebody else's assessment of the guy. Looking at van der Kamp's stats on both a year-to-year basis as well as this past season on a game-by-game basis, the one thing that sticks out is that his stats for the most part seem to drop as the days/years go by: Year - Ave. 2010 - 45.2 2011 - 42.7 2012 - 41.0 2013 - 41.6 2013 Season: 8/31 - 44.8 9/14 - 42.2 9/26 - 47.4 10/3 - 39.7 10/12- 47.5 10/19 -43.1 10/26 -40.2 11/2 - 43.7 11/9 - 36.0 11/16 -39.6 11/23 -36.0 11/30 -37.0 I don't know if the weather played a factor or not (looking at the 2013 game-to-game), but fwiw, his yearly average dropped as well. Univ. Miami (by way of Cincinati) Pat O'Donnell has 'fast twitch' quads as he ran 4.53-4.6 40 at the combine. Problem with him sometimes is consistency with his hang time (much like TJ Conway whom we stupidly grabbed a few years back from Idaho and whose 'indoor stadium' 47+ yd. average was "line drive" inflated). A guy I'd look at (jmho) would be Cody Mandell of Alabama-solid. Also, UMemphis' punter.
OK but there a difference between having a hand in something and having the final say so in it. I'm not saying he going to a bad GM or a good one. I don't understand some of stuff he does so far. All I'm saying some people talk like he was the reason that Seattle won the SB. That fair from the truth.
First off, talk Engrish. Secondly, if you know anything about football front office operations you'd know that draft picks are the collaborative decision of the top guys, not one man's decision, especially in a team like the Seahawks. Idzik had a major role in selecting players, in rounds 1 through 7 each year. He was selected as the Jets' GM because of his track record of consistently selecting good players in the draft. BPA team building usually means you're getting good value for a player whether he turns into an all pro or not. Thirdly, acting as if Idzik didn't have a lot to do with the Seattle team that won the Super Bowl it what's "fair" from the truth.
It seems like you think the GM values no input and just gives a blanket "yes" or "no" on every decision. In that case, you are the one who has no idea how a front office is run. Basically, you're a fool if you think a GM doesn't have a team of at least 5 people in on any and all personnel decisions.
Becoming some of my favorite repartee here on TGG. Which internet GM knows more about real NFL GMs than another internet GM. _
I never said that. But how do we know that Izdik wanted to draft Sherman or Wilson? Then again we don't know he didn't. My whole point is he given to much credit for something we don't know.
The point is the guy has had a hand in personnel decisions since 1991. In 2002, a team won a Superbowl with a roster that Idzik had a hand in assembling. In 2013, a team won a Superbowl that Idzik had a hand in assembling. He has been around winning philosophies and has had a hand in formulating them. Whether or not those players were HIS picks doesn't matter, and you're right, we don't know. What's important to me is that he knows what to look for when trying to assemble a winning roster, because he either has, or has been around people that have.
Btw, I was't criticizing you. I just find it funny that dedicated fans that are visisting a fan forum with other completely dedicated fans have the temerity to say "well, you should try watching games some day" or "well it appears you just started following football" or "listen to me and you might learn something" blahblahblah. We ALL watch the games and we ALL follow football passionately. Opinions differ, because our opinions don't match up does not mean some folks know more than others. Well, most others _
Assuming many football fans don't know more than other football fans is silly. Following football can mean so many different things. Many people consider watching the games once live, and listening to NFL Network/ESPN reporters is following football. Others think watching each game multiple times, usually at least once with coaches film, researching scouting practices, contract practices, cap rules, and coaching and GM philosophies is following football. Who do you think has a more informed opinion? Some people are also better at reading between the lines. For instance, all of the people on this board who were fretting that Idzik messed up in his Free Agency deals because he too slow moving clearly have a less informed opinion than those who have read the numerous articles and watched the numerous press conferences in which Idzik's philosophy is laid out clearly, both before and during his tenure as Jets GM. Exactly, and don't forget the years in Arizona where they went to the SB but didn't win. If he was against the smart decisions that each of these teams made when they were successful, would he continue moving up in the football world? If he wasn't on board with the draftees and signings as he took on bigger and bigger responsibilities for these teams, would he likely get recommendations and good word of mouth as he moved up the ladder? By the 2013 offseason the Seahawks all stars were already known, and if Idzik was opposed to those moves don't you think he'd be demoted instead of highly recommended for a GM position? He worked in tandem with the best drafting GM in the past 10 years, do you really think he didn't have a grasp on what it was that they were building? Just think about it. He was a major influence when drafting... If he was dead against any one of the great picks Schneider made it likely wouldn't have happened, or if he was proved wrong on multiple occasions he wouldn't be our GM.
All I'm saying here is this: Idzik's plan to build through the draft almost exclusively is no secret, I mean there have even been posters on here saying the same thing for the past year. On top of that, of course you never KNOW how a draft will play out, but Idzik has an excellent track record in the draft. See: Seahawks drafting under Idzik's tenure, Jets drafting under Idzik's tenure. If that's not a good track record so far then there is no such thing.
If we don't get some good quality depth out of this draft AND at least one impact player I will be disappointed. With this many picks a monkey could randomly select from a draft board and you'd at least find SOMEONE with talent, so I'm hoping we can outperform our simian cousins. I'm so looking forward to the draft cuz it's looking like I'm gonna miss this season.... DAMN!
