Desean Jackson is not a top end WR. He's had one season where he kind of looked like a top end WR. Go look at the actual top end WR's and their careers and you'll see the difference. So Mo Wilkerson looks at what the Jets are paying a good but not great WR and he says, I'm going to get more because I believe I am a top end DL. No, but he looks at the deal that Mo Wilkerson squeezed out of the Jets and he says "I'm at least 80% as valuable as Mo Wilkerson and I'm going to get paid that way or I'll go to free agency and see what's out there for a 27 year old NT who plays the way I do." Sheldon Richardson isn't going to take less than Mo Wilkerson if he's as good as he looks to be, and so Jackson's deal pushed Mo Wilkerson's price up and that's what the other DL on the Jets are looking at. That's what you meant right?
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 1m Woody Johnson mention, of DeSean, interest "at the right price" and "if he fits into the culture of our locker room." Questions persist. Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 2m Woody Johnson says of a potential DeSean Jackson trade "we're always interested in talent." But insinuates trade not their best option. It's telling that he would say even that much about somebody under contract to another team.
@RapSheet: Woody Johnson says of a potential DeSean Jackson trade "we're always interested in talent." But insinuates trade not their best option. @HubbuchNYP: Woody confirms the Jets are looking to trade for DeSean Jackson. By name. Kinda contradicting reports there.
i concur with bradway and i've been saying it forever i think people forget we are eventually going to have to pay our own players a lot of cash
We have a lot of cash..a lot more next year than this year even. And half our players will be out of the NFL in 4 years anyway.
it's all salary, so if they cut him none of it hurts them. I didn't realize that the Eagles eat all of the signing bonus amounts for the life of the contract. you are absolutely right about the precedent it could set with the team, which is why I believe you do this deal only if you believe you could redo the deal, minimize the annual salary and give him a little more in guarantees. otherwise it would end up being a one year rental to avoid the precedent. of course, giving him more guaranteed cash over the long term comes back to your injury concerns and is it worth it.
Wilkerson will be locked up next season, we JUST drafted Milliner and Richardson. Who says Coples will even deserve another contract, it's not like he's broken out. (Not hating, I hope he does.) And Snacks? I love the guy but he will never be paid big money.
Desean makes sense to me. He's a guy that complements the receiver's already on the roster and also brings a HUGE boost to our special teams. He's making a lot of money - but it looks like he can easily be cut in '15 or '16 if he doesn't live up to his contract. Best of all Idzik can approach the draft looking to add the BPA. Sure we have needs but nothing so glaring like our current receiving dearth that demands immediate attention in the first two rounds.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...son-confirms-jets-interest-in-desean-jackson/ Just another article, Woody was pretty brazen with that move. He said also he did not want to be patient, wants to win now.
once we pay for wilk, snacks, and sheldon eventually that money will go away quickly. idzik seems like a guy that doesn't want to let our FAs walk too
see right there, that makes no sense to me at all. Wilkerson's camp is gonna say "I believe I'm a top DE and I want to the payed like one in relation to other upper tier DE's" which will no doubt impact what Richardson makes in couple of years. They WON'T say "I see this WR you traded for is making 10 million a year, i don't think he's all that great, I'm a better DE in comparison to my peers than he is a WR in comparison to his peers, and I deserve to payed more than the amount he got because of that." Y'know why? because he's not a Wide Receiver! what does the amount one is payed for to play one position have to do with the pay scale of another entirely different position? JJ Watt has more impact on Wilkerson's deal than ANY offensive player will, because they both play the same position. what a WR makes has nothing to do with anything for what a DE makes, except (and this is important) for the amount of cap space available as a result of a high deal or perhaps the impact it has on the reputation of a GM (you pay a lot of guys high amounts and you'll be known as a guy that does so) but even in that scenario a player would try to take advantage in a manner relative to their position, and once again Idzik has sort of proven he's a bit of a rock in negotiations so theres no fear of that. having ONE guy that makes 10 mill as a result of a trade no less shouldn't impact a player of another position's salary in the way you're suggesting. I'm picturing an Agent getting some strange looks as Idzik wonders just what the hell the value of player in an entirely different position has to do with what the man in front him brings to theirs.
Woody should stay out of football decisions. He is one of those guys that thinks he is smart because he was born with money. Despite Tanny's willingness to take the blame for Tebow it was pretty apparent the Tebow move was all Woody. I am all for building the team slowly and not taking short cuts. Jackson might make sense if we were a player or two away. But instead its a typical inpatient Woody move designed to get the Jets headlines not long term success.
Agree here. That's a TERRIBLE way of looking at it and completely false. A top tier defensive lineman will not demand more because a guy playing WR is getting paid a ton. He demands more based on the demand at that said position, JJ Watt etc.
Snacks is not a 10+ million dollar player. It least he hasn't proven to be yet. He is great at what he does (stop the run) but he doesn't play enough snaps to warrant be given that type of money. He's not Gerald McCoy or Marcel Dareus who played 475 and 331 more snaps then he did last year. He'd get paid like Pouha got paid. This is assuming he remains the type of player he is (production wise). He could always develop into something more but its to early to speculate that.
let's go back literally 2 weeks alterraun verner "i want to be respected and be a top payed player on the team" yeah desean getting 10 mil a year has more to do with it than you think
For the Bucs 4th round pick I'd take him so long as he didn't need a new deal. It's worth the 3 year rental in that scenario IMO. I don't like the idea of having to give him a monster deal that sets us up poorly going forward.
I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is that a top flight WR on your team does not determine how much a defensive end makes. It doesn't work that way
no, but it could make mo wilk want more so he's a top payed player on this team honestly though he should be the top paid player on this team. he's our leader on defense and a home grown talent. that's the stuff we need
I don't think you have to trade a 3rd rounder to have a chance to get him, I think there is a good chance Jackson will be cut.
