Thats what scares me, Brady is nearing the end, New England knows this and is gearing up for one last run or two at a SB. Similar to what Denver is doing. They are thinking short term and rightfully so. There the type of team that would be all over a player like Jackson. .
Agreed, its just tough to let that type of talent possibly end up elsewhere though. He really is everything the Jets need at receiver.
The attitude thing isnt a big deal to me. He had a good run in Philly up until this off season. It's not like he's bounced around from team to team like TO or Brandon Marshall. He's never had any real off the field issues either. While he was never as good under MM and Reid as he was last year under Kelly, he was still pretty good. Plus a bright mind like MM knows what made Jackson so good last year and will more then likely work some of those wrinkles into his offense.
WOW, what an awesome board, almost 170 votes so far in this poll.....I've never seen such an active Jets BB anywhere else on the web, I'm so glad I joined!
We can afford the $10 mil cap hit this season, and if he does suffer an injury and his long term value is suspect, his cap hit is only $2 million per year for the following two years from his signing bonus. The rest is just salary if he is cut. The big question is whether he is worth $10 million this coming season.
?? http://www.overthecap.com/cap.php?Name=DeSean Jackson&Position=WR&Team=Eagles And regardless, I want to trade for Jackson.
I would be comfortable trading as high as a 3rd round pick for a guy of Jackson's caliber and game changing abilities! having Jackson lets say for a 3rd round pick would give us weapons on offense this team hasnt seen in years! Jackson, Decker, Kerley, Cumberland, Ivory, Vick!. Not to mention I think trading for jackson would allow us to address our secondary which is beyond terrible! In the first 2 rounds we can draft CB and Safety, or CB and TE, but the point is trading for jackson would allow us not to waste our 1st round pick on a WR, which is no guarantee to pan out (see Stephen Hill, even though he was a 2nd round pick).
How would trading for Jackson allow them to address the need in the secondary? I'm guessing you mean it "frees up" the jets to take a CB or S in round 1 over a WR but that would just be to prevent the fans from shitting a brick which they shouldn't give a crap about. I don't recall the last time a Jets 1st round pick wasn't met with a rain of boos so who gives a crap? And you say they won't have a chance to waste a first round pick on a WR who could bust but so could a CB! Look at all the hate Milliner was getting early on. This is bad logic, the Jets should take the BPA outside of Dline as they are absolutely stacked at that position. I'd rather have a successful 1st rounder at a luxury position than a bust at a need position.
We'd have no cap hit going forward other than yearly salary if we acquired him under the original contract. The Eagles will take those prorated bonus numbers on the cap as a dead money hit at the moment they let Jackson go whether by trade or release. My big question is whether acquiring Jackson would pay off for the Jets in the end. You have to take all the factors into account and I'm not sure the financial factors are acceptable to the Jets even if Jackson plays well for them. If having him on the roster makes 3 or more guys peg their salary floor at $10M+ when their deals come due then the Jets almost can't win at that point. Mo Wilkerson at 10M+, Quinton Coples at 10M+, Damon Harrison at 10M+, Sheldon Richardson at 10M+, Dee Milliner at 10M+ and Jackson at 10M+ and the QB at 10M+, that's a lot of big salaries and if all those guys are here and Desean Jackson is making 10M+ a year, well that's going to be the baseline they are all looking at.
I definitely agree with the latter end of your post. Landing DJax via trade puts us in a tough position in the long run. We can't afford to lose any of the guys you mentioned (sans Milliner and Geno/whoever our QB is at the time).
Unless Coples really improves in the next two years he's not a $10m+ player. More in the $5m-$8m range. I'd say the same for Harrison at this point although I think he has more upside than Coples. That's still a lot at $10m-$16m tied up in just those two guys. Then add all the other guys you mentioned and their yearly numbers. It will definitely make it tough to do a deal with DJax. Also even though draft picks are far from a sure thing, the Jets could take Cooks and another WR in round 2 and save a ton of cap space at that position for the next 4 years. However, if the Jets win and win big after acquiring DJax then I think it's worth the move. I do agree that these type of deals usually end up going bad for the Jets.
Hold on... we are pegging Coples, Snacks and Milliner as $10 mil a year guys? Not quite sure I'm ready to do that.
Coples was a 1st round pick in 2012. If he works out well he's going to get paid. Snacks and Milliner are both reaches in the analysis at this moment but if they work out they won't be reaches when they sign their next deal. If Snacks is a dominant NT he's going to get a lot of money on his next deal, if not from the Jets then on the open market. Milliner is a 9 pick CB if he works out he's going to get paid. People get paid on their second deal not their first these days. There's just a lot to think about. What if the Jets take on Jackson and his deal and he does ok but Eric Decker is much better at $3M a year less? What if Kerley turns out to be a monster slot receiver with DJax on one side and Decker on the other? When you pay outside the family everybody inside wants a really good deal too. They might suck it up and give a bit of a hometown discount if everybody else is also giving up a bit but if you pay somebody from outside at top of the scale, that's going to blow all of that up. No more mercs. That's where I hope the Jets are going. Decker signed a good deal for him that was also a good deal for the Jets. It was a win-win. That's where you want to be with a young talented roster. Looking for a lot of win-win opportunities.
I don't even- what!? You need to explain this to me, how do the salaries of several players who aren't top end WR's get impacted by one to the point of being payed exactly the same? Because to ME, its based on what others in their position are making and how good they are in relation to those players. Damon Harrison's camp isn't gonna ask for 10 million based on the team accepting a 10 million a year deal form a WR. its completely unrelated, the only impact it MIGHT have is wether or not a GM is looked at as pushover in terms of reputation from doing things like this on a consistent basis, which Idzik does not have going for him. by that measure anybody that has a QB making big bucks in the late teens must have others making that same amount based solely on having one player that does, Salaries are Positional in nature what the hell would DJAX's proposed deal have to do what a bunch of D-lineman make? they'll impact each other more than DJAX would, certainly.
Yeah, if they ever play on Desean's level. The young WRs will know that the position will be open in a few years and will strive for excellence. If they put up similar #s they should get paid. That's not a bad message at all. If you play like Desean, you get paid like Desean. Simple. Worse comes to worst they get as good, and we cut Desean and roll with them. The Jets should offer the 4th round pick from tampa bay. The Eagles won't get a 3rd, its as close to 3rd round as you can get. I do agree if he hits the open market he will go with whoever pays the most, and it probably won't be the Jets. We can always guarantee him a little bit more money on the same contract he has, or rework for the long term. If we did that we'd essentially be drafting a #1 WR in the 4th round of the draft.
