The lack of cap space out there in general to pay him what he thinks he deserves. The cap space in this market has dried up over the last 2 weeks as teams overspent on CB's and offensive linemen. There are probably 2 or 3 teams left in the market that could afford to give him a very high end contract and one of them is the Jets who likely will not be bidding at that level. Everybody talks about the Raiders, but they have spent heavily this year on veteran free agents and they may not want to give Jackson the kind of contract he's looking for. It's very possible that Desean Jackson goes on the market and finds a big need for his services but not at the price he is looking for. At that point he either takes the highest offer out there or becomes very choosey and goes someplace he wants to go on a 1 year deal (plus a fake 2nd year) so that he can hit the market right out of the gate next year when teams still have cap space to spend.
Well said. You pretty much summed up exactly how I feel about this. As enticing as his talent is I just can't help feeling that things would go sour pretty quickly.
20 mil for the wr's is ok when they are talented but spread over 3 guys vs 5 makes the corps a bit thin, potentially. look i am not callng for kerley to be cut or not re signed but in the salary cap age, you pay more than average to one player means you have to pay less than average to another, with kerley coming due next year its the obvious place to get the extra you would be paying for jackson. and ftr i am ok with that. jackson and decker > decker and kerley
I forgot he that he threw himself the ball. I forgot he was the only receiver on the team. I forgot, sorry.
For those saying we just released a Wide Receiver like this.. no Holmes hasn't been close to Jackson's skill since 2009. Desean is a playmaker who's coming off a career season. Trading for him won't jeopardize our cap space to resign our D-line in the future and it gives this offense a chance to become dynamic for the first time since I've been a fan. I wasn't crazy about the Vick signing but the Vick/Desean Eagles combo deal with Marty as our O-coordinator would be a lethal combination. I'm praying we draft Ebron we could seriously have a top 10 offense if we pull of this deal and get Ebron.
Thats why we will let him get cut. I wouldnt make the trade now, if the Eagles cut him then it will help a lot considering we wouldnt have to give up a 3rd rounder. If another team trades for him then so be it
i think the biggest question we aren't thinking about is why do the eagles want to cut a WR that just had a career year?
What is his current contract? he wants more guaranteed money. He just had a career year and wants a pay rise basically. The way our offence has been we need this kind of injection. If we can get it after he is cut then more the better. It could make all the difference on offence and we have the cap space to eat it for a year or two.
It's not that. And btw, that a very Holmes-like comment. #1 WR's catch a ton of balls because you can't really cover them effectively for a very long. You can sell out now and then and shut them down but basically a #1 WR is going to get his catches, somewhere between 5 and 7 a game and there's nothing you can do about that. Jackson has had ONE season in his career where he has averaged 5 catches a game and that was last year. That's making a very thin case for him being a #1 WR.
Are you kidding me with this? I don't even know what we're talking about anymore. He's a legitimate deep threat that will demand safety attention, regardless of whether it's Geno or Vick throwing him the ball. That opens up space for Decker, Kerley, and Cumberland underneath to do what they do best with less attention. He's played with Mornhinweg and Vick before. He's 27, so he has at least a few more years in the tank. If there's any question about DeSean Jackson as a fit with this team, it's about his attitude and his asking price. Maybe he's just trying to get a call from the Jets, but he seems pretty excited about wanting to play with Vick again. Enough with the #1 receiver crap already. Last year, the Jet's best receiver was Kerley and we have an opportunity to make him a borderline starter. People that talk about this are the same ones that are hell bent on tabbing quarterbacks as "elite" and arguing whether NASCAR is a "sport." Who the hell cares? Just make a better roster.
This is the whole point though. Whether or not Jackson is a #1 is very important in terms of figuring out whether to pick him up at the rate he is paid at. It's not some "angels dancing on the head of a pin" thing. If you pay a player like he is a #1 caliber player and a star he damn well better be a #1 player and a star. The Jets have a lot of things up in the air right now and they are headed into a deep draft that is thick at positions they have needs at. You can't throw a dart at the draft board without hitting a WR that is appropriate value and talented at any of the Jets first 5 picks or so. Picking up a diva WR who is a very highly compensated but wants more is about the last thing that makes sense in the situation the Jets are in right now. If they can reach an understanding with Jackson that his contract is his contract then maybe it makes sense to pick him up cheaply via a trade. In the absence of that understanding there's no good reason to take on the Eagles headache as if it was their own.
The difference is that Tanny gave Holmes a big contract after his one good season. Does anyone know the facts about Jackson's current contract? How much is guaranteed? Is that what he is looking for-guaranteed money? We have cap space now. maybe we can work something out.
