If Desean Jackson was a free agent, who, out of everyone in this league could lure him to the NY Jets?...
difference is, holme had some minor legal issues and failed drug tests, pitt was dealing with ben's rape issuesand needed to act like they cared about the type of players they had. holmes being a headache going into a contract year plus the ben stuff is what drove the price down. jacson is a bit of high maintenance, but has no legal issues (i am aware of) and is inked for the next 3 years. i actually feel like he is signed right through the perfect window for us. we could draft his replacement next year and have him ready when the contract ends and jackson is looking for more $ at 30 y.o.
If he is released and wants to play for the Jets, I'd sign him to a contract nearly identical to Decker's. There is no doubt he is a talent, and that's what I would pay. 5 years @35 million. If he takes a better offer somewhere else let him go.
He just had a career year for the Eagles, who went to the playoffs for the first time in three years in the process. Now they're looking to dump him. Seriously, this is like a higher risk higher stakes version of the Holmes trade. If the Jets make this deal they'd better have a rock solid plan for how to carry it off without bumps and hitches along the way. If they just make a value play for him without taking into consideration why his current team is running screaming into the parking lot they'll likely regret it in a year or two. Maybe sooner.
You cut a guy like Desean Jackson when his overall contribution to the team goes into the red. The overall contribution being things he does on the field (good), likely production moving forward (good), cap number (bad), cap number moving forward (bad), attitude (bad), etc. The ironic thing in all of this is that getting Darrelle Revis may preclude the Patriots from making a legitimate offer to Desean Jackson.
Agree. I am lukewarm to this despite the upgrade at WR. I mean we didn't keep Howard and now we'll have to pay 8-9 mil for Jackson - in front of a draft that is loaded at WR.
A lot of reports saying Eagles will cut him if they can't trade him. Looks like Eagles will be getting no higher than a 5th for DeSean. I still have my reservations.
I already cited my source of who is saying Desean might be released so if you're too lazy to read it then it's your problem.
I wouldn't expect DJax to sign with NE, I don't think they'd pay him what he wants even if they had it available, and I really don't think he'll like Belichick's style of coaching. I think he'd rather play with Vick and eventually Geno, and would like Rex's style. I think we should sign him if he is cut, but as I said before, not for more than Decker's contract. If the Pats and Jets are making the same offer I think he comes to the Jets, but I have to imagine someone is going to pay him more than either of those teams. Raiders are very close to where he played college ball.
If we gave Philly our 4th rounder from Tampa, it'd be one of the biggest deals in Jets history because essentially, we would have turned Darrelle Revis into Desean Jackson, Sheldon Richardson and all our draft picks in the draft....
I doubt he'd come for that little. I wouldn't mind paying up to like 8.5 million a year. That would be like swapping Holmes with Jackson and adding Decker for a reasonable #2 contract.
And this is exactly why John Idzik stayed patient while all you guys were flipping out. If the Jets WANT Desean, they can offer him as much money as any other team. If he does get cut, the Jets wont even have to lose a pick over him which is a huge plus.
He is already due over $10M a yr avg over the next 3 years and wanting more. What do you think would entice him to sign for $8.5M?
I don't like DeSean's antics. Remember the time he spiked the ball before the goal line? The crap he pulled as he scored the winning TD against the Giants when the Eagles could have lost the play on a penalty for leaving the bench and being on the field as Jackson taunted the Giants? I just don't want a character like this here. You thought Santonio was bad? It's why the Eagles will let him go - it's time for the Eagles to get serious and aim for a championship. they don't see Jackson as being that kind of player. His behavior will become worse here, not better.
Honestly I'd probably pay him even a bit more if he's willing to take like $4mil a year in guarantees. With a small amount of guaranteed $$ he will be more attractive trade bait if a drafted WR steps up, or if necessary we can cut ties with him. His upside is clear, but his risk dictates low guarantees.
Having Desean would also allow us to get A LOT more out of Decker, and when was the last time the Jets had a play maker/deep threat as good as Jackson? Ive watched this guy completely flip games because of his talent alone.
the jets seem to be avoiding contractual headaches, see revis and holmes... and rewarding 'team-friendly' guys like cumberland and pace. philly would have to make this a pretty sweet deal... i'm sure another huckleberry will step up and make a deal before the jets do.
