It's a good situation for the Jets. I am sure it's Geno's job to lose. He will have to screw up pretty big or fold under the pressure to lose the job. I think Vick's performance will matter much less. If Geno does not screw up it is his job no matter how well Vick plays within reason. If Vick is absolutely spectacular, stuns and amazes everyone then yes he could win the job. But absent him looking like Manning with legs it is all on how well Geno develops and plays this off-season. Vick is just the safety-valve emergency option. Which leaves us with 2 scenarios. Scenario one Geno wins the job. We have a capable back up if he plays poorly or he gets injured and given how bad the OL was last year and it looks to be worse this year an injury is likely. Scenario 2 is Geno cannot handle the pressure and lets Vick take the job. This is not a bad outcome either it tells us that there is a good chance Geno is not the long term future if he cannot handle the pressure of a QB competition. It will also give him time to sit and learn and for us to see how much he wants to get better. What I am curious to see in the short term is Geno's reaction to the signing. Will he be supportive and a good teammate or will he do a Sanchez and get all passive aggressive and make threats in the media. Will he say the right thing and embrace the competition saying he will work as hard as he can to earn the job or will he do a Sanchez and imply the competition is fixed and state if there is a fair competition he cannot lose. Unlike Sanchez he almost always seemed to say the right thing last year after poor play and did not throw his teammates under the bus. He always seemed to take personal responsibility with a few exceptions unlike Sanchez who always seemed to blame someone else or minimize his own mistakes. I think this will be a good test for Geno's maturity and to see what kind of teammate and leader he is. I have questions about both. Hopefully he will step up and welcome Vick to the Jets, welcome the competition and put the team first not his personal ambitions or ego.
If Geno shows any significant improvement, Geno will start. I think the organization is behind Smith. It would take an awful preseason for Geno to lose the job. If Geno gets hurt or struggles, putting Vick in is a good solution IMO.
What if Geno shows significant improvement but Vick is still clearly superior? I think you need to go with the best player. _
I think the Jets still go with Geno, as long as they are winning - they are looking for a long-term solution, not a short-term.
Whoever wins the job should start. Nothing should be given to Geno, nothing should be given to Vick. You can't baby guys and try to make it work. That's what the Jets did with Sanchez and look where it got them. The best player should play. Simple as that.
Not the narrative of the thread. Our record is 0-0 at the start, we're not winning or losing. If Geno is clearly better he should start. If Vick is clearly better he should start. There are no long term solutions to be concerned about here- it's about winning week 1. _
Should? Geno but that is taking he has a strong camp. I do think people are crazy to think Vick lasts 16 games so I expect Geno to still play a large role into the 2014 season. We need to supply both QBs with weapons and see how they go in preseason.....you give some actual talent surrounding the QBs, you then start to see what the QB has in em. I think this team just won't finish with an awful pick and thus will miss Mariota/Hundley/Winston. Don't wanna take Logan unless he makes huge strides this upcoming year for Stanford but Mannion would be intriguing, especially if we draft his boy Cooks. Its all moot point though and of course its in the best interest for this franchise that Geno has a solid Sophomore year.
Ok, if record is not involved. If he is able to be more productive throwing the ball and develops chemistry with the receivers he will start easily. We still need to see how Geno performs in preseason. That's key. - Is he better at taking snaps under center? - footwork improved? - Decision making improved? Not really in the Geno Smith bandwagon, but I think the organization supports Geno Smith
If Geno is ready to go he should start the season. If he's not ready to go and Vick is then Vick should start the season.
I assume he'll be better at all of that and if he's better than Vick he should start. If Vick steps onto the practice field and is simply superior to Geno from day 1 and continues through camp, he has to start. _
I think Geno's chances of beating out Vick in the QB comp are not too good. I'm thinking Vick could very well be starting game 1.
I see what you mean, if Vick gets hot and stays that way all TC and PS while Smith makes improvements that suggest he's an improved QB worth putting on the field but isn't quite where Vick is at who do you put out on the field? This while, forgetting preconceived notions of the two of course. I think it comes down to momentum. If Smith has a spring in his step I'm not sure benching him in favor of a surging Vick is better for the team in the long haul. the goal is to get Smith to play better, if he is 9 times out of 10 they'll respond to that by making him starter. unless Vick is juts THAT damn good, then I guess time on the bench won't hurt.
will not vote because I don't really like either QB. i think Vick beats him out pretty easily, but gets injured early on in the season, so geno will ultimately get the job back at some point, but not because he earned it.
I don't care how much spring Geno has in his step. His spring, his arm and his legs are not issues for him. He needs to improve on his football IQ pure and simple. If he can show a much improved awareness for where he is on the field, can improve in his reads and his decision making, that's all that matters. If he has more spring in his step but he isn't improving above the neck, then we need to figure out an alternative plan for the future. Having said that, the better player should play. _
Thanks for explaining that to us,I was always wondering how that worked.I never new our record was 0-0 at the start of season thanks for clearing that up
I would prefer to start with Geno - he could be the future of this team - Vick cannot be the future of this team and isn't a Manning-esque player that could give you a 2-3 year shot at a title if the other pieces are present.
Squint a little bit and you can see shades of Vinny in him. You have to squint though. What Vinny did was remarkable and nobody else is likely to do that again any time soon.
