I'd be nervous about acquiring a guy with 3 years and 30 million left on his contract who wants to renegotiate. He's already at the outer limits of where a WR can be effective on the cap in terms of helping his team win. He's coming off a career year. If you pick up the deal it's a move you can defend because he's obviously talented and he's in his prime. If you pick up the deal and he holds out, well that's almost guaranteed to be a bad deal by the time everything is worked out.

DeSean Jackson is exactly the kind of guy you don't want to pick up at a time that you are trying to figure out how to fit homegrown stars under the cap. They'll be watching what happens with him and figuring that into their negotiating posture and end points on their own deals.

If the Jets can get him in a cheap deal with the Eagles and it's for the 3 years left on his deal that's maybe not a bad move. If on the other hand he's going to turn into a circus after he arrives that's really bad news.

He is still more of a threat than any receiver the Jets have had in their history except maybe Al Toon.

More of a threat? Yes, of course. He's a very dynamic player. Who costs a lot of money, is prone to disappear for stretches, and from the sound of it, is a bit of a head case and wants MORE money.

If we are looking to trade for Desean Jackson, I'd rather just use a pick on Cooks.

    I still don't don't believe that....

Its the level that one plays at and how that relates to what others that play the same position do that matters in contract talks, not what another above average player on the same team at an entirely different position makes.

Wilkerson, Coples, and Kerely matter to Wilkerson, Coples, and Kerely in other words, none of these guys are gonna ask for more because some other guy completely unrelated to them is making a certain amount. (JK is a slot guy sand will likely not be in the same category as a Jackson)

If you want to talk strength of negotiation, I think he's earned a bit of respect given his recent actions, don't you?

I agree, same build and athletic ability, basically same player but much cheaper and with less NFL baggage.

The Jets need somebody that scares defenses..they haven't had that in years. If they get it then maybe they can have an honest to goodness running game again. Cooks might end up being great whereas Jackson is great and there is no guarantee the Jets will ever be able to get Cooks anyway. Last year it was a given they were getting Tavon Austin and you saw how that worked out (to our betterment maybe).

I mean it's not like Rex has ever blown smoke up our asses or anything, right?
Remember how the team a few years back was the best he's ever coached?
    I take a wait & see approach

Westhoff doesn't like the Jets free agency, says he would give up a 3rd for Jackson.

i always take the "what are they supposed to say?" route with coaches quotes. not just rex but almost all coaches. like rex is going to say no, this is it. we don't expect to addd anything else to the offense. decker is the savior. what exactly was the point of that quote?

Just the fact that the Jets uncharacteristically held a press conference or whatever it was, yesterday tells you they hear the outcries of the fans.

Westy was a special teams coordinator, not a gm, so of course he would want an explosive punt returner.

That's the official end of the Sanchize era. Not a bad one, all things considered.
