That's assuming he knows what he's doing.

If you want to believe that a guy who was raised in a football family and has worked in three organizations that got to a Super Bowl in close proximity to his employment and graduated from Dartmouth with a math degree and worked for IBM at Armonk and also played football and coached it and was in the personnel department for the TB teams that built the Super Bowl winner and was Assistant GM at TB when they won the Super Bowl and has worked in Football Administration and has done Cap management and represented last year's Super Bowl winning franchise at League Meetings doesn't know what he's doing?

Well, I do have a bridge I would sell you cheap. Only got about 125 years on it and it's located in the heart of NY between Manhattan and Brooklyn. You could setup a tollbooth and make a fortune.

    Really, you could.

theres definite values dissonance between fans and the GM...

fans want to blow their load on a certain set of players they've become enamored with and Idzik either didn't get the opportunity to strike (wether he cared to or not) or wasn't as enamored overall as fans were about a player and didn't feel do or die about getting them.

Idzik is apparently an idiot for not making more of an effort to sign DRC a player because its an obvious move to make... as dictated by a FAN'S perspective only.

thats why people are angry, we're putting way too much stock into our opinions and personal perspectives and are judging idzik on how he acts in relation to them, thinking them to be infallible and made of obvious unanimous truths.

Was signing DRC a do or die necessary game breaking move that should have been done no matter the costs? maybe to you or the next guy, but Idzik sees things differently... and he's NOT unequivocally wrong for that.

we as fans are too full of our own opinions to handle a GM who doesn't think the world will end unless we sign (insert player here). The reality we live in isn't being respected, so we're pissed.

Note: this is not to say whatever perceptions of our current and potential roster Idzik has is infallible either. while he may be in a better place to judge than us he could be wrong about many things, I merely mean to highlight the fact that our disappointment is spurning from something entirely subjective not being upheld.

He's not perfect and I'm not saying he is, but we should recognize that our opinions, no matter who bolstered by the media that feeds us, aren't either, so why are we judging him on them?

also FTR I don't think the FO are doing a great job - but then its so hard for the average fan to know what is going on behind closed doors - it may be that the CBs they saw didn't test well, or didn't fit the scheme or who the hell knows why they haven't really signed anyone in that regard yet - but I am much happier being a team that isn't going nuts in FA when we have a developmental QB - I just hope they take cap space this year and use it to sort long term deals with Wilk and a few others.

In the end you may be entirely right. But I am willing to give the guy at least 3 seasons to let his vision play out. He's had one, and IMO has done well with his moves, namely keeping Rex and hiring Marty. People always say that you can't judge a draft until 3 years later, I'm willing to give Idzik the same leash. If anything, I would rather err on the side of caution and build through the draft and use FA to fill holes. All the while having the necessary funds to lock up your own core players...

My issue is once again rex has to work with scraps. He will have 4 games before he's taking shit and coaching for his job. 3 years? What if it fails? It's a now league

Well, I think the point is that if you are going to be overpaying for free agents, the optimal time to do it is when you are already fairly good, and thus you have the best chance of maximizing your return on investment. I'm pretty sure you understand this.

Idzik has no track record running the personnnel side of an organization.

People take jobs that on paper they have the background for and fail all the time. BFD.

You think he could play press coverage, though?

Then my position does not apply to you. I am discussing those people who are angry and criticizing Idzik for not signing players. Obviously discussion can be had prior to results based on our opinions and hypotheticals that are presented with valid reasoning.

The opinion that Idzik is doing a bad job because he hasn't signed any players, though, isn't sound reasoning because it is from a position of ignorance that doesn't know what he is aiming for. We can question it, and discuss whether it will be successful or not, but the whiners are already proclaiming it a failure prior to any on-field results.

It's in response to the Jetnation link that's been in several threads.

He was on the other side of the ball. He faced press coverage all the time. Had nice hair too. The hair always gets to me when I look at his pictures.

Idzik is clearly a failure at winning the free agency wars. That's ok because nobody wins those wars anyway. They just spend a gazillion dollars to get fired a year or two later.

I'm not talking about questioning the direction, I am talking about declaring it a failure.

ok. lets say 3 years from now the jets are 4-12, rex is gone, still no qb prospects and the drafts have yielded bust after bust after bust. would you rather a new g.m come into that 4-12 team with no real committed money to aging vets and a workable cap situation or the same mess idzic inhereited last year? you are getting mad because he isn't mortgaging the future for this season, he is trying to keep the cap in front of him by not over committing to 28-29 y.o. players who are looking for long term security. it might work, it might not, but if it doesn't the team will be more attractive to the next g.m. who gets to take a swing at it

Continuity, absolutely. I'm really digging the continuity of developing a 26 year old first year starting RT out of nowhere who got better and better as the season went on and resigning him to a long term deal for the sake of continui...oh just remembered Idzik let him walk to bring in an older player with an up and down career for comparable money. Yep, the new New York Jets, the new team motto is don't sign any outsiders for market value unless they have a reality t.v. show and take that saved money and burn it because we won't be doing the continuity thing with our own players either. Outside of Calvin Pace though, let's throw $5M at him even though he was almost going to retire last year before he got paid the vet min to come in and get 10 coverage sacks on the back of everyone else in the front seven. What's not to gush about? Also, remind me how Calvin Pace became a Jet eligible to be resigned for continuity again?

So Asamoah's new contract isn't valued appropriately to his production? Or TJ Ward's? Actually I agree with you, those contracts aren't valued appropriately because they're too cheap. Let's just pay the roster 70-75% of what the rest of the league is paying their rosters this year, maybe shoot for 65% next year? Sounds like a recipe for success idk what I was thinking. Look at all the success the Montreal Expos had besides. After all, everybody knows that the team would have to just forfeit those 12 draft picks as soon as an FA was signed. Well if not, at the very least you have to draft like an idiot by taking the wrong players at the wrong positions. Says so right in the GM rule book.

Excellent critique, other than the fact that I wrote the word 'several' (as you quoted) and you apparently read it as 'seven' and went off on that irrelevant tirade. At least I'm hoping that was the mistake you made because otherwise it's even scarier. 'Several' usually indicates a number around 3-5 btw.

Oh I hear the 'competition' preaching. The problem is that when a preacher starts believing their bullshit sermons a little too much, the church can start to lose out on their true objective of successfully making money. For the upteenth time the team has 12 draft picks next month regardless of how many FAs are signed and Idzik would be under no official obligation to draft Colt Lyerla with ten of those picks. Last I checked anyway. But by all means, be happy about fielding an inferior roster with $30M in cap space because after all, there is absolutely no future benefit to having at the minimum 10-15M of that money sitting free. It's fun to watch Brian Winters get burned 8 times a game, see Tommy Bohanon come in to kill another drive because the offense needs so much help doing that without him, Colon drawing another flag unless he's getting burned in pass pro. Can't wait to see what a couple more 5th round rookie starters are going to bring to the table this year. Depth and competition baby!

Read the last 4 replies for my counterpoints to your same argument in yet another paragraph.
