Well that's not really a fair question nor indicative of him being some genius mastermind. 1) Nobody can read his mind so how is anyone supposed to understand his motives? 2) Even if it's a deliberate and calculated approach doesn't mean his goals will come to fruition. I can take a deliberate and calculated approach to eating a jar of expired mayonnaise but it doesn't mean it's going to taste like steak just because I want it to. Finally, let's say that it is deliberate and calculated and his plan is to save up cap space for next year or whatever...to what end? To make a huge splash in free agency and make a run? Isn't that what so many Idzik lovers are saying they are glad he isn't doing? I can get behind a plan of not getting into cap hell and having to lose your own guys you drafted due to a lack of cap space but we're pretty far on the extreme end of cap hell, we could be somewhere in the middle where we have a more competitive team and still have cap flexibility.
of course it doesn't mean it will work. that isn't the point. Nobody who is defending Idzik is claiming that it is clearly a strategy that will undoubtedly lead to success and there will never be anything to criticize. The point is it is too soon to tell either way, so there is no reason to be rating and raving like hysterics. no, they aren't saying they are glad he isn't doing it absolutely, what they are saying clearly applies to what he is doing this off season and is based on the current state of the team. Nothing indicates that, potentially, if he hits a home run in the draft, we got some studs and make a leap to 11-5 next year, and there are key free agents available that could complete the team and potentially take them to Super Bowl contenders that they would not want Idzik to sign them because of some absolute position about signing free agents regardless of any other factor. It is dishonest to even attempt to claim that is what their position entails.
How many plays did Tebow throw the football? He was not a real Qb. Ryan Lindley started one game because no one else could suit up. He was not a real NFL starting Qb. Come on here. Is that the best you can come up with? If so, thanks for helping me make my point.
You keep using charged words like vocal whiners, and hysterics. I might as well accuse the FO Homers here of braindead flatlining complacency, possibly drug induced. to the extent of being in a coma. Or the metaphor of whistling past the graveyard. You do know what that means, don't you? My problem is not whether Idzik has a plan or not. It is that if he has a plan, I don't see the sense of it. You really are in love with this ridiculous notion that too many merely want to be excited by free agency. I supose we are supposed to perceive you as serenely above such nonsense, somehow seeing in Idzik a level of mastery and control that is simply not evident to the emotional wrecks you are touting as your straw men. But... at this point I am all in on 2014 being an off year. No sense now in the FO going crazy all of a sudden with some stopgap like signing Vick. That would only make things worse given his health, the controversy that would come with him, and the rest. I do think Cro should be brought back as a steadying vet presence, leaving the Jets able to get a wideout in the first round. It would also be nice if some vet Qb who would be a better fit than Vick could be brought in. Best we can do at this point. But you really should drop the phony claim to emotional maturity. It ain't making it.
problem with your position is that you equate someone not willing to pass judgement yet as being front office homers, which is flawed, because a homer applauds the decision making simply because they support the team. that isn't what is being done by those simply not willing to criticize it. most are willing to wait and see, and that wouldn't qualify as being complacent or brain dead, that would simply be being rational since there won't be any football played to judge the results for 6 months. not only that, but the decisions aren't being made solely with this season in mind. the fact that you miss that basic difference between not willing to pass judgement and confusing it with outright support and agreement, squarely validates my emotional hysteric position. I didn't think it applied to you specifically before hand, but your confusing of two distinct positions as one position couldn't be the result of rational thinking and could only be because of emotional frailty. and my criticism of those wanting to be excited by free agency doesn't even remotely equate to meaning I don't get excited by signing players. I don't get frustrated or aggravated because we don't sign players. again, two different attitudes that you are attempting to claim are one to try and make a flawed point.
Tebow did have a good game in the playoffs when they beat Steelers,he threw for over 300 that game. Not saying I like Tebow but I always wanted to see him start a few games when he was riding bench here while Sanchez was imploding
What is there not to understand? He's the top free agent QB, is be better than any QB on our roster and has experience in our OC's system. On top of that he was a good mentor to Foles and helped his team get through a tough locker room situation last year by drawing on his experience with a more difficult past.
Every time I read one of your over-the-top hyperbolic posts, I just want to cry. Cry in the stupidity that is both mankind, and Jet fans in particular.
Him and his wife make millions of dollars a year, and a reality show only pays a few hundred thousand per year (except for the most popular ones like the pawn shop one, and the guys who drive their van around the country, buying things from widows.) I seriously doubt he would do something he thought was bad for his football career to help out his reality show.
To be fair, the Titanic tried desperately to change course once the iceberg had been spotted. I'm not sure who would be playing the role of the iceberg in this scenario, however.
I'm not anti-Decker. Quite the contrary. My "statement" had more to do whether we can utilize his talents to their fullest. You have seen Geno Smith play, right?
The anguish many of our fans have is because Idzik's plan is foreign to us. The article is good. But how much input into Seahawks plan was Idzik's input? I tend to believe it was Carol's and Richardson's and their scouting system. Did we steal their scouts and secrets? Don't think so. So is Idzik depending on our scouts being a copy of the Seahawks or is he (a capologist) going to make the final decision? We are in a very iffy situation. So far all I have seen Idzik do is save Woody's money. I hope he as good as many of our fans think he is. For our teams sake I really hope it works. As for me I have my doubts.
There are no good free agent QBs this year. Vick is brittle, undersized, old and a turnover machine. He also happens to hold on to the ball longer than any QB in the league which leads to him taking a ridiculous amount of punishment. Why you want your 2nd year potential franchise QB "learning" from Vick is beyond me.
Idzik let Slauson go because we were so tight against the cap last year, and Slauson was actually one of the first guards signed last free agency. Don't blow a gasket man, can anyone tell me how this team has gotten worse this offseason? What roster loss this offseason is going to seriously, negatively effect the team we have? People say we don't have Cro but regardless of what you expect him to do next year, he graded out as one of the worst CB's in the league last year therefore we shouldn't see a major decline at CB. So compared to last year, we really haven't lost anyone major. Idzik isn't randomly assuming 5-7th round pics will be starting this year, in terms of true roster holes we don't actually have any except arguably CB (I still think we bring back Cro, and get Ed Reed on a 1-2 year deal). If we haven't downgraded at any position, and improved at WR (our worst corp by far last year) I just don't understand how we have gotten worse. We now go into the draft with a starter penciled in at every position, leaving us free to take BPA down the line again. If unlike last year just our first two picks become starters, that means they've won the position battle and have now improved our team at two positions. By signing just a couple more low cost guys, and maybe Michael Vick, I think we will be good to go for the draft. On a side note, Idzik's strategy is interesting because assume after all is said and done he actually ends up with like $25-30 million over the cap going into 2014. That means we will have the cushion of cap space we already would have had going into 2015 as the direct result of having a roster without many big contract players. It also means the $30 million will roll over into into 2015 as well, as far as I understand. So in 2015 we would have around $60 million. Theoretically, if we spend $30 million again, the $30 million remaining will roll into 2016. You have to consider the bigger deals we will be handing out to our home grown guys in the next couple years, but we will also be finishing up with Mangold and D'Brick and Harris, so how nice would it be to just have the flexibility of $50-60 million in cap space every year? The trick is you can't spend all of it in any one season, because otherwise you have no roll-over and will put yourself in the red. So what it really does is give you wiggle room both in the offseason and regular season to get exactly the guys you want, for instance yes you might do bargain moves most of the time but when that guy becomes available that Idzik really believes will be a difference maker, he can strike. Leverage is always the best thing to have as an NFL GM.
