Yeahreally. That's why you bring in more db's on passing downs. Heh! As for LB, Pace is obviously back on a one year deal, and i thought that was a good move. He had a pretty good season last year. He will most likely be gone next off season. Coples is something of a question mark, but in reality he is often playing as a down lineman, and the experiment with him as a tweener will continue before conclusions can be firmly reached about him. Barnes? I thought he didn't play hardly at all. Why talk about him in pass coverage? The real medium term concern is Harris. Ftr I've been reluctant to call him a core player equivalent to Mangold, Ferguson and when they were still here Revis and Cromartie. I think he's overpaid. But he had a pretty good year last year, after a pretty bad one, so I hope he plays equally well this coming year. But along with Mangold and Ferguson he will begin declining soon enough, unfortunately, and hte Jets will have to make a big move to replace him. I don't see Davis taking over his role, unfortunately. The Jets LB's are not a great group, but this off season I don't see them as a priority in the draft. Two starters minimum will have to be added, one before 2015, one before 2016, but that's a bit off.
Since we're rebuilding this is a good chance for guys like Wilson, Walls, Lankster, and Dowling to step up. More than likely they'll be competing for the number 2 CB spot. I'm fine with that, maybe they draft a guy in the mid to late rounds. I believe that Milliner will continue to get better and he'll have a sold sophomore campaign. He'll have his growing pains still, but he won't be nearly as bad as he was last year. I don't think we're that bad at the corner position at all.
Ftr I think the CS will coach Milliner up, and I am reasonably hopeful about him. That being the case I would feel far better about him at the #2 slot this coming season. I don't think it is a good experience getting burned too often by the other team's number one wideout, which would be a huge risk if he's left in single coverage. And if the Jets can no longer play man coverage, the LB's will get torched.
He was a top 10 pick entering his second year. Now is the time for him to have an increased role. Last year towards the end of the season he was guarding the likes of Josh Gordon, and Mike Wallace and was doing a good job. I think he'll be fine but I do understand your concerns.
Nothing else to it, we missed in FA. I am a Clemson Alum. I would like us to nab Bashaud Breeland in rd 2. However, I would not like us to see a CB in rd 1 unless Gilbert falls (which wont happen). Too bad...DRC would of been a sound CB. We can still bring back Cro which would get us by for 1 more yr.
I would say not getting benched is an increased role, so let's see if he can do that in the #2 slot before hanging him out to dry with the best receivers in the league.
This isn't "hanging him out to dry" though. He was drafted fairly high and it makes sense to transition him into that number 1 CB role. I'd be more worried if he never had that good stretch to end the season. But that gives me confidence that he'll be fine.
Yeah he played very well the last few games and looked confident, I think he's ready for the starting spot especially with another training camp under his belt.
I was talking that is what should have been done, not managing your FA with a load of money "planning" on using Milliner as the #1 Cb and not sign anyone else.
I am going off his season long performance last year rather than his being ninth pick in the draft, which you seem to be hanging your hat on. Despite improving over the last few games, i don't know anyone but a total Jet homer who would call Milliner a #1 Cb level of quality.
Fixed that for you. Hey if Rex is on board with this concept, I might be, too. Word is Rex is not on board with it.
i think we should absolutely bring back Cro at this time. As for the draft, go BPA, and certainly OT and CB are in the mix for high consideration. IMO, 2 most important positions in football outside of QB. If you are weak in either position, opposing teams will exploit it all day. So if we are really building for the future, we need more permanent solutions at those positions.
Which brings us full circle to another debate we were having. We are rebuilding. It makes sense to put him in that role. If we had bigger expectations then Milliner would be a nickleback right now.
Milliner would get plenty of experience starting in the #2 spot. In fact probably more than if he were #1 and the #2 is some scrub, since that Cb will get all the attention. Methinks you are merely excusing inaction by the FO.
They just resigned Willie Colon, signed Decker, and Giacomini, Douzable, Cumberland, Folk etc. Milliner was drafted in the top 10 he was brought in to be our number 1 CB. We're rebuilding so let him get his experience as the number 1 CB.
Didn't see this mentioned on here anywhere, but if it is, feel free to delete.... It is a "source" though, but mentions trading for Joseph of the Texans. https://twitter.com/dennis_agapito/status/446355019474800640
Joseph is a better CB than anybody who was on the market this year aside from Revis and he has cap numbers of $7.5M this year and $8.5M next year. He's 30 years old in April and probably will not cost the Jets much if the new head coach in Houston has decided to part ways. He has a much bigger cap number for the Texans. They'd save $3.75M by trading him. He'd be off the books for 2015. This is the kind of guy where if you could get him for a 5th round pick you probably want to make the trade, especially with all the compensation picks coming. He got very upset with the Texans fans when they cheered the Schaub injury and dropped an f-bomb in the media at the end of the game. That's not an attitude problem, it's having your teammate's back. It might be part of the impetus for a trade though.
