You have to like seeing big price FAs replaced with drafted players. It's still early in this off season, so this is by no means final. I will update it as the off season continues. So far it does indeed seem like more positive than negative, despite more physical players not here. However, the talent levels of many of the losses were really high (Revis, Cro, Landry etc). I know I put Keller as a W next to Geno, but I do consider Keller a loss overall. Winslow wasn't better last year (even though he was decent), and we'll see about who takes the spot this year. If Sanchez leaves the team, I'll use him as the comparison to Geno and the new TE in comparison to Keller. Geno is also still young and has a way to go before we can truly give him a grade. Also it's good to note that some of the +'s were only +s because the guys were washed up when they left. This is based on their current talent level (or level when they left), obviously a 2010 Bart Scott is better than a 2013 Demario Davis, but Davis could get there and he was an upgrade at the end when Scott was deteriorating. *EDIT: Updated Ford / Patterson
Will Keller ever even play again? He tore his ACL, MCL and PCL and dislocated his knee. I'm not sure he has even recovered yet.
Think it's too early to give Goodson a + over McKnight. If he doesn't return then he played how many games? McKnight was great for us at least when you include his ST ability. And was an underused pass catcher. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
He'll play again. Gronkowski had a similar knee injury (ACL - and unofficially also a MCL & meniscus injury) and recovered from it just fine. As long as Keller got a good surgeon and worked hard in physical therapy (didn't become depressed), then he should be ready to play in 2014. It usually takes around 10 months, and given the timing of his injury he should have plenty of time. The extra tears mean more work for the surgeon and more chances of complications, and a harder rehab for Keller - but not necessarily a longer rehab.
Until he cuts Sanchez, he is doing a poor job this offseason. When Mark is gone, then Jetnation can breathe a sigh of relief.
And who do you expect to waltz in and be our backup Qb/the Qb that can compete with Geno during training camp? I think we should cut Sanchez (or restructure his contract for 1 year), but we need to replace him first.
I'm all for not wasting tons of money on overpriced players. There's a reason Baltimore sucked this year. That being said, other than the Decker signing, I haven't seen any other effort to make the team better considering we have a crap ton of cap space. I mean, that cap space won't be filled by drafted players. There is too much NOT to at least get some decent players signed.
Awesome post Barcs. When you put everything out there and look at the body of work so far - Idzik has done a good job. The draft is coming, we will really see just how good Idzik truly is.
I guarantee that even if/when Sanchez leaves you will still talk about him in every single one of your posts.
I think people are overlooking that the extra cap space can be carried over to next yr. That space can be used to resign Wilkerson next yr. This year will be used to set the foundation for the team. We have 12 draft picks, give them a yr to see if there is potential there and give geno a yr to see if he can be our future qb. If everything comes together can use the space next yr to get one or two FA that could elevate the team to the next level once the foundation has been put in.
But since 1 year deals are becoming more common, I don't understand why we can't just net a couple more of those.
With the insane amount of cap space, he can sign Mo Wilk and god knows how many other people to long term deals. This is a win now league. The current foundation of the team isnt going to be in their prime much longer with before they have to be replaced (Harris, Mangold, DBrick). We cant just sit back and wait for a few years and do absolutely nothing in the meantime but stockpile cap room. Idzik is seeming more and more like the Jeffrey Loria of football by literally signing nothing but bottom feeders that no other team will want. Even if he overspended on a few players this offseason, he still has a ton of cap room to work with. It doesnt make much sense in direction he is going in. With a few additions and Geno improving, this could be a playoff team next year. The way it stands right now, unless we hit the draft on the money, this team could be worse then last years...
McKnight just never worked out in the NFL. It's probably a mental thing, maybe he couldn't handle the media of New York. I remember he threatened to fight someone from the media (or someone that he thought was from the press) on his twitter account because they said he was going to be cut, and he was like meet me in the parking lot after practice and I'll kick your ass. I don't blame mike t for this pick either. He took a shot in the 4th round on a guy with all the physical tools, but he just couldn't get it together on the field. The later round are fine for that type of stuff. What got mike t in trouble was doing it in the 2nd round with vlad and hill.
Of course your assuming that Idzik will not continue his prudent ways. He is making woody a ton of money. I frankly think he will go the cheaper route and may even look into trading Wilkerson. this of course s just my opinion.
Yeah, that leapt out at me, too. It's not just that Goodson didn't play last season, which was not the FO's fault. It's that he seemed a question mark even before then. I would mark that a wash. I would also note that what makes Decker an upgrade over Holmes is that Holmes is coming off an injury, which comes off the lis franc injury. RIGHT NOW it's likelyl that Holmes will have to show he is healthy in order to get picked up somewhere else, so on that basis alone Decker is a big upgrade. But compared to last season, when we all were expecting an eventual return to form, or close to it, for Holmes, I would mark that down as a wash, too. Decker I concede even by that measure costs less, but he really has yet to show his ceiling is as high as Holmes's was. So, if the metric is what was expected of Holmes, based on his prior performance and the perceived likelihood he would return to form, at this point last year, I don't think you can say Decker is an upgrade, either. As someone else alluded to, another point is that THE EXTENT of the downgrade at some positions is greater than for some of the upgrades. Revis to Milliner, Cromartie to Walls, Slauson to Winters, at least so far are all huge downgrades. My favorite upgrade is Ivory for Greene, but I remain concerned about his injury history, and Greene for all his mediocre ypc, is durable. Richardson and Harrison are upgrades for sure, but slghtly less so. Another is the point that Landry has not been replaced, so that right now should go down as a negative of significance as well. Finally, I know Moore retired and was tailing off there, but even in his last year he played better than Colon did last year, and there's no reason to think Colon will play any better coming back from injury and a year older. In short the roster looks worse right noe than this time last year, before the draft.
