Are jets fans really this rock stupid? god what the drought has done... why are we putting so much gravitas into signing every name from this time period acting as if its our only chance at a super bowl? we knew he wasn't getting all of them, we know that some players will choose other locations over ours for reasons beyond money, and we knew that many free agents weren't gonna be as high on his list as rumor mills might suggest and we knew that we weren't a team thats a plug in away form being perfect and that setting ourselves up for other options is worth the wait if we're not sure if any given player we're after is worth more than we were willing to give them. or perhaps we knew none of this and just thought "rumor we'll get this guy- hype for getting this guy- y we no get this guy!?" the stupid part is, this really is just us getting mad the jets decided they didn't need DRC that much. thats it, other than that its just an unrealistic set of expectations held by an utterly insecure fan base looking for a quick fix. there will be a tomorrow, opportunities will present themselves, theres no need to over commit to ones we weren't sure of in the first place or get mad over ones that were never there in the first place.
oh and why the flying fuck are we listening to Mehta now? the national media loves to do so because they're hacks, but we should know better. the team has given him nothing, he's just making shit up to appeal to our dumbasses, and its working. '
why is it unreasonable that Idzik doesn't believe that the free agents that were available this year are not the key pieces we are missing? just because the Jets are lacking at a position, and a free agent is available at that position, does not mean that specific player is the player that solves the Jets needs long term. Maybe Idzik isn't looking for expensive stop-gap solutions. this is what blowhard expert fans don't get (not specifically you, this is a general accusation that simply applies to whoever it fits). They have no strategy about how to build a team because they are ignorant of all the considerations that have to go into it, and simply take the simplest solution -- player is available, need that position, so sign the player. Idzik has more at stake in his decisions than any of you. You get emotional satisfaction if the Jets win, and disappointment when they lose. Idzik gets those and has his job, career and reputation on the line. Clearly there is method to his madness with what he is doing, unless you want to take the position that he is a self-destructive idiot with zero interest in a long-term career as an NFL GM. only a hysteric would take that position. his strategy may or maynot work, time will tell. but his strategy isn't about this season specifically, it is about long term success. the fact is none of you have any idea what it takes to be an NFL GM or to build a football team. if you cannot even put yourself in the position to be considered for the job, you don't have the ability. plain and simple. anyone even remotely competent enough to make valid arguments against what Idzik is doing would work for an NFL team and be on their way up the ladder to a possible career as a GM. you're not because you have no idea what it takes to even be in position to get that job, nevertheless what it takes to do the job. all the whining is simply fan ignorance born out of not having your emotional needs met. you want the team to be better, but know so little about what that means you simply equate it to signing whatever player whose name you recognize, and if Idzik doesn't do that he must be deficient in his abilities or misguided in his strategy -- accusation made from people who have no basis to question anyone's ability or strategy considering their extreme lack of knowledge in doing such a job themselves. It's the equivalent of someone who eats frozen meals criticizing Stoffers and suggesting recipes that contain ingredients and formulas that cannot be frozen in packaging and then reheated but has no background or knowledge in food science. Why do I get the feeling that the same people criticizing Idzik likely ridiculed the Redskins a decade ago for all their free agent spending.
Let the man build the team his way. You want another Tannenbaum experience? Yeah it was nice to get those players cheap, get lucky and make a run twice. I want to get as far away from the NY win now mentality as possible. Build something FFS.
I still have faith. With as many picks as the Jets have, Idzik probably feels he can add at least six starters through the draft. Keeping this in mind, he's reluctant to overpay guys in free agency.
What kind of a mess did we have last year? The jets went 8-8 and did better than everyone thought, what mess are these writers talking about?
The mere fact that the primary source of misguided media information pounding on Idzik comes from non other than the king shit of unnamed sources makes me believe Idzik even more. Living in LA but traveling frequently to NY I really feel for all of the local sports fans, as I came to realize how painfully pathetic the NY sports media and their back page tabloids are. Yet, who would have thought than in 2014 they would have sunk to a miserable new time low in journalistic standards with the glorification of a total non entity like Metha. I'm a big supporter of Idzik but recognize he is not without some faults, and this free agency has not been nearly as successful so far as we all would have hoped. But to be trashed by Metha is a clear indication that he is shoving silence up the hacks ass and I'm loving it.
The media wants us to be the 2012 clown show so badly that they're reaching for bs and overdramatizing stories to make us look bad.
This post compared to your previous one in this thread strikes me as schizophrenic. Didn't you just acknowledge 2014 is a rebuilding year? I think that means the Jets will not be contenders. Which is it? For Smith to be an average NFL starting Qb would involve a huge leap upward in talent and performance. You are certainly not counting on that, I would hope. No one said anything about splurging or wasting money. Not this or last off season. But I don't recall even the FO Homers here saying last off season that they expected the FO to sit on a literally huge amount of cap space this off season. You can't build ONLY on the draft. There is no reason to think Idzik and his people can be counted on to have great drafts, and there is no draft strategy that requires a team to not pursue good opportunities in FA. And "continue to build"? I don't see how the Jet roster right now is superior to this time last year. Others here have pointed out lost opportunities to upgrade the roster this off season. I agree with those points. As for your general preference that the FO not be critiized until some indeterminate point in the future, ftr I have never said they are incapable of pulling a rabbit out of a hat. I am questioning where they are going, where they think they are going. Since you don't know those things, I don't get why questions are so unsettling.
Lets see how this plays out. Are there good players left to sign. The answer is yes. Are they high price tag. Most of them no. So you can build depth and maybe hit a home run with an underrated player. When you sign a big price guy you have no where to go but down. Because you've already paid them to be very good or better. And sometimes they're not.
The market price is the market price if Idzik is not inline with that then he will lose..until the market comes down to his comfort zone..buyer beware ..you get what you pay for.
Lol... I mean i agree 100% here but like i said i never felt we were that far from being a force in this division. I just wanna make the playoffs. Idziks future plan seems great.. Solid blueprint .. How most teams should do it .. But damn .. If u haven't made the playoffs in 3 yrs and u have some money to flex with and a good fairly young player available that could potentially give ur team a much needed boost why no go for that guy? Im not with the build a team via free agency either but it aint trickin if u got it.. And we got it! Rex and company in the jets facility aint "pissed" for no reason
Last year was a rebuilding year yet we almost made the playoffs. This year is year 2 of the rebuilding plan. So who's to say that we can't be competitive again? Rebuilding and being competitive aren't exclusive from each other. As for Geno I'm not "counting" on him to do much except show stark improvement over last year. I do believe he has the ability to be an average QB in year 2. With his talent and knack for hardwork I believe it's possible. You guys want Idzik to spend money just to appease the ADHD fanbase. Idzik signed Giacomini, and Decker, and he resigned Cumberland, Pace and Folk. So no he wasn't just "sitting on the money". Idzik isn't only building through the draft. So far he's brought in Goodson, Ivory, Winslow, Colon, Barnes, Landry, Walls, Dowling, Decker, Giacomini. He just isn't signing big names with large price tags. He's going after cheap vets like Barnes, Colon, Winslow, Giacomini and low risk high reward young guys like Goodson, Ivory, Sudfeld, Salas etc. He's using these guys to build up depth. As for your last point. We. Are. Rebuilding. That's the answer to your question.
If he's depending on at least 6 starters through this draft, than that is a very poor approach. We had a decent draft last year. 5 guys started, but only 1 of them probably should have. we didn't have great depth or alternate options when they struggled. we still don't know what we have with some of last years crop, and have to figure this years draft class will struggle also if put out there too soon. we need depth, and cannot simply rely on 2014 draftees to start in 2014.
Im sick of Manish Mehta, he IS a poor journalist. He reports all these stories, fine, but why doesnt he ever ask questions about his stories during the Jets press conferences? "Rex would you like to comment on my story about my anonymous sources claiming that you will be fired after the season?" Why doesnt he ask these questions? he hides behind his pen and never confronts the issue head on. Thats what poor journalism is, confront the people you are making reports about, he NEVER does. He acts like Mr. Nice Guy in the press room. I know you all hate Francesa (and yes I understand he isnt a journalist), but for the most part, when Frances conduct in an interview he asks the hard questions. Mehta runs away from it. Thats why he has zero respect among his colleagues
