I agree with just about everything u said here. While I support his overall strategy about building this team through the draft, I feel that he has made some mistakes this free agency. It's clear to all that Milliner is not ready for #1 cb duty yet, but here he is in that role because we failed to act in time on DRC. There should havyue been a8replacement plan in place when we let go of Cro. Now we have reports of Rex going crazy and rightfully so because his defense just can't function without the cb's playing press man. So he dropped the ball on a few signings that wouldn't have broken the bank, and would've made certain positions more valuable (Asamoah at rg battling Campbell, and Davis at cb. Just those 2 guys with Decker and all the other guys we resigned would've made us a much tougher team). At this point I just hope and pray that we resign Cro. Even if we draft a cb in the 1st round our secondary will still get torched without a vet back there. I know that there are always training camp cuts, but that means we're signing and relying on a guy who was not good enough to make an NFL team._ I know that we're not winning the Super Bowl this year, even if we'd have signed Revis back, but I don't want to see the . go backwards and finish worse than 8-8. Rex is pissed and rightfully so. You can't expect the man to make chicken salad from chicken shit, especially at the cb position of the defense! So I'm still supporting Idzik and his plan to build through the draft, but I see that he's still has some learning on the job to do. He might have to backoff on being such a hard ass when negotiating to F.A.'s cause it's just making them pass us by for another team. We don't want to seem to eager to sign them, but we don't wanna come off aloof either. I hope that he hired some great scouts to help him with the draft this year cause we're gonna need to hit on a lot of players in order to field a playoff team this year. I know that playoffs seem pretty distant right now after only signing Decker, but if Geno, Milliner, Richardson, Couples, Campbell, and Oday all step up their play from last season AND the rookies that we draft can have an immediate impact, then I think we still have a chance at the playoffs.
And yet it led to our statistically best defense in god knows how long and back to back trips to the AFCCG. How about Faneca, thomas Jones, Damien Woody? Bad moves as well? #1 rush offense in football. Free agency isn't he enemy, and it's a valuable tool. The enemy has been the consistent inability to identify talent in the draft. Btw, the ONLY WAY to have sustained success is to have a franchise QB. Every single team has guys that get hurt and lose productivity and suck money from the cap. The consistently elite teams can mask it with their insane QB play. Find a franchise QB and you can literally use any model you wish and you will be a perennial playoff team. This idea that free agent signings killed us is nonsense. What killed us was when after two seasons the talent we originally built up to carry our QB naturally diminished (which is what happens to EVERY TEAM) but Sanchez was proven incapable of doing anything without a probowl team around him. The plan failed bc our QB they thought was the future turned out to be total garbage. Not bc Kris Jenkins was here the previous three seasons.
One last thing: Braylon, Holmes and co are not the reason we don't have a reliable receiver outside of Kerley. The reason is bc our future #1 WR from GT turned out to be exactly what he was in college: a fast guy who can't run routes or catch a football. The plan would have been a perfect transition, but our inability to find even a decent WR in the early 2nd round destroyed the plan. Cromartie, Sheppard, and Jimmy Leonard are not why we are desperate for DBs. Instead it's bc our first round CB from Boise is one of the worst in football every year, and our rookie ninth overall pick played even worse. The plan was set up perfectly, but the evaluation in the draft was miserable. We have no RG. It's not bc we signed Faneca 7 years ago. It's bc we drafted VLAD DUCASSE as his replacement!! We spent a 6th overall pick on Sanchez who is a backup at best in this league. So then we spent a 2nd rounder on Geno. And yet still have no QB of the future! In 5 years we spent two early draft picks on QBs yet don't have one! Do you think it's coincidence that the only early round players who have been successes since 2009 are DTs? Aka the position our HC coached all his life? I don't want them to sign a million guys. But spending some of their 50 mil to improve the roster makes sense to me bc the problem is our drafting, not the cap.
I think odds are Cro comes back. I feel like he would have signed already if he wasn't waiting to see if Idzik came back. It's not exactly an ideal situation, especially with his injury concerns, but we could do worse. We could have done a lot better and actually improved the team and locked up a guy for a number of years instead of relying on an injury plagued, declining and aging guy for maybe a year or two...but that's the situation we've been put in. I'd sure as hell rather have Cro back than spend a high draft pick on a CB again.
I'm sure a physical would be part of any offer and they can determine from the results what risk his hip will be for this season and any contract would be setup so that we could get out after a year . The problem now is what will he cost after we whiffed on every other corner out there.
Haha..the top 20 FA CBs per rotoworld and where they are today. 1. Darrelle Revis (Signed one-year, $12M deal with NE) 2. Brent Grimes (Re-signed four-year, $32M deal with MIA) 3. Aqib Talib (Signed six-year, $57M deal with DEN) 4. Alterraun Verner (Signed four-year, $25.5M deal with TB) 5. Vontae Davis (Re-signed four-year, $39M deal with IND) 6. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Signed five-year, $39M deal with NYG) 7. Sam Shields (Re-signed four-year, $39M deal with GB) 8. Walter Thurmond III (Signed one-year, $3.5M deal with NYG) 9. Charles Tillman (Re-signed one-year, $3.5M deal with CHI) 10. Antonio Cromartie 11. Tarell Brown (Signed one-year, $3.5M deal with OAK) 12. Captain Munnerlyn (Signed three-year, $11.25M deal with MIN) 13. DeAngelo Hall (Re-signed four-year, $17M deal with WAS) 14. Corey Graham (Signed four-year, $16M deal with BUF) 15. Derek Cox (Signed one-year deal with MIN) 16. Chris Cook (Signed one-year deal with SF) 17. Terrell Thomas 18. Carlos Rogers 19. Dimitri Patterson 20. Brandon Browner (Signed three-year, $17M deal with NE) cue the "aww, none of them would have helped the Jets" or "they were all overpaid" comments which are sure to come.
Look at the Ny Giants offseason with there shitty cap space,They have signed 9 players total but Idzik is smarter then Jerry Reece?a proven Superbowl winner
We will have to compare it to the list you provided a few posts after this one. Something tells me it will be a lot more than the $4mil that a few guys signed for there. Probably not the $9mil+ some other guys signed for, though. Personally the one I'm most pissed off about is Munnerlyn. He signed for less than $4mil a season, why not throw $5mil at him? He'd be an upgrade on Cro given his age, health issues, recent play and would actually cost less. It's not even an overpay situation as there are guys below him on that list making more and guys barely above him making way more than that. That list is not the be-all-and-end-all obviously but he's definitely a good corner.
This thread makes me think that only whiny children root for the Jets. This was not a great crop of free agents, and we're not serious contenders this year. Calm down. Additionally, football is the ultimate team sport. It's not a plug and play situation. Flooding your team with free agents means you need a lot more time to gel. Home grown is the way to go. Free agency has always been and will always be a Band-aid situation except for a signing here or there (which we got one). Idzik's first draft was decent. Let the guy breathe a little.
Munnerlyn is not your prototypical CB. He is a decent corner, but he's a better nickel corner. I'd rather stick with Wilson there than throw $5M at a nickel corner.
It doesn't have to be a great crop of FAs, it has to be better than what we have and far better teams than the Jets thought it was better than what they had.
That's the start of the media trying to run him out of town. One problem with working in NY is that when they turn against you it's tough to turn it back around.
Have a question for everyone. Terrel Thomas worth a look? I know he's been hurt a lot but before that he seemed to be a very good player. Don't watch the Giants so don't really have a feel for what he is now. Is he worth a look?
It's really only one guy giving him all the flack. The other beat writers are all pretty quiet with the exception of Mr. Mehta. For some reason though the national writers pick up on his stories and BS.
reese inherited a SB team, got lucky w/ 2 fluky runs w/ a core that was mostly in place. They are desperate now w/ Eli getting older and worse. it's funny, when we sign FAs and the Giants don't we get bashed for trying to buy championships, we NYG sigs FAs and we are patient we get bashed again. We are doing the right thing not overpaying for guys. just b/c you have cap space doesn't mean you have to use it all. Let NYG use their little cap space on a guy who has been on 4 teams in 4 years and was thinking about retirement. we have a ton of picks, we have flexibility to sign guys and make trades. Sure I wanted a guy or 2 we missed out on but there hasn't been a can't miss guy I wanted.
