Just throwing this out there. 3 of the top 10 teams spenders from 2013 offseason made the playoffs: Miami- 146.1 million (8 new players) 8-8 Indy- 132 million (8) 11-5* Titans - 97.2 million (10) 7-9 Eagles - 95.6 million (10) 10-6* Browns - 87.1 million (8) 4-12 Rams - 69.1 million (2) 7-9 Chiefs - 62.4 million (8) 11-5* Bears - 60 million (7) 8-8 Bucs - $50.4 (7) 4-12 Lions - $49 (3) 7-9 2012 was similar, but I couldn't get every teams exact figures. However, some highlights: Bills - Mario Williams 6-10 Rams - Cortland Finnegan 7-8-1 Bucs - Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks 7-9
And where do we go from here? Resign our own and hope for a monster draft? We can look back and bitch about what we didn't get in free agency but all that does is get us aggravated. It's of little consolation but I reaffirmed some early observations about the Jets so far that I intend to keep in front of me going forward. A) There has not been one ounce of value coming out of our local media clowns. Every rumor, every tweet, every email was inaccurate at best and completely incendiary and worthless at worst. All they print is what they think will get us pissed at Idzik and or Rex or Woody. If we never quote Metha again it will be too soon for me. B) Idzik is moving at his own deliberate slow pace, will not overcommit for anyone in free agency and going forward he will try to lift every rock to find value as the market is quickly drying up. We can forget instant gratification from this guy. Hope he sees something we don't. C) If there was ever a doubt as to who calls the personnel shots well that doubt is gone D) The FO might have a much higher expectation about our young secondary that we all collectively do. E) We seem to be gearing towards resigning our own back and depend almost exclusively on the draft. Not my first choice but what do I know. If Cro comes back and plays as he did in 2013 we are hosed. Same with our OGs. F) It's hard at this time to determine if there is anything remaining in free agency that would be an upgrade of any substance to our secondary and guard position. So at this juncture is hard to say we have improved our roster and while is way early, the question still remains. What options do we have in front of us to improve some of the critical areas? Where do we go from here? Damn, I'm concerned that we might have taken conservative negotiations to an unreasonable level.
It definitely seems desperate that we came in last minute to offer him more. Rappaport's fce told the entire story...he was just sad for us. It seems like we really thought we were getting Vontae Davis when we cut Cromartie. I'm still trying to be optimistic but I don't like this report
because his play was not worth the cap hit. they couldn't restructure because it was the final year of his contract and cba legal stuff wouldn't allow it, they werent going to extend him and keep putting the cap hit later down the road, he knew he had to be cut.
I seriously think Idzik got boned via Vontae Davis. He was the guy that would have fit the system, and maybe he thought they had a handshake deal in place (which led to dumping Cro). We will never know, Idzik and company don't seem to leak any knowledge to the press. So that's just my take on it, I saw Davis as Plan A. If that is the case, I hope he learned from that.
But would they really have needed to cut Cro a week ago as opposed to now? Why trust a 'handshake agreement' when you don't have to? Just sign the guy first and then cut Cro. That's what they seem to be doing with Sanchez, they haven't cut him yet and probably won't until they actually sign another QB (if they do).
They had to cut him anyways, he wasn't worth the 15 million dollar hit. I just believe he thought it would be easier to sign a replacement. I have this gut feeling Sanchez is going to get reworked. Call me crazy.
Yeah, right. Revis holding out twice and demanding obscene contract in 2012 was because Jets cuts Cro in 2013. That makes sense.
There's just way too much irrational panic on here right now. I'm actually having a tough time understanding it. Idzik deserves a chance to let his plan play out. What exactly are we so upset about anyway? That we didn't go on a wild spending spree? Cause we certainly haven't been idle this FA period. We signed a marquee WR, resigned a few of our own & have done due dilligence on many prospects. Idzik is clearly gonna run a tight ship cap wise..if that's his model..why not let him execute it?? I could understand being upset if we were pulling the Tannenbaum full court press on all these FA's, making lucrative contract offers & still missing on guys. That isn't the case. We haven't even really wine & dined anyone outside of Decker & DRC...& DRC was only offered something last minute. That leads me to believe there is a bigger plan in play here. This isn't a matter of incompetence or failure. We have 12 draft picks in a very strong draft class...we still have a ton of cap space. There is an unbelieveable amount to still be excited about. It's mind boggling for so many to act like such whining babies when you consider that.
I'm surprised DRC got that much. Since he was still remaining I thought he was going to be cheaper and not close to the CB contracts that came before him
Truth. I totally agree with this. Ive noticed ppl who previously said DRC was worth it for 7-8 mill per. Now because Idzik cant hold Jerry Reece's suspenders, DRC is not worth it. Some ppl here are pessimists, some always have their green shaded glasses on, and then some are objective and form opinions on a case by case basis. Good mix here, thanks for all the contributed insight!
DRC is going to his 4th team. How many good seasons has he actually had? I haven't been watching him closely until this yr (which was a very good yr) and am under the impression he wasn't a sure thing.
To be fair, I am sure the Jets have told Cromartie in years past to please better his technique, because the athletic ability won't always be there. I don't think he listened all that well to that request. Call me crazy. Excellent season last yr with the Broncos. That's about it. He was garbage in Philly.
If true, when added to Rappaport's early statement that Rex took a hardline stance or wouldn't negotiate, it could be both a positive sign that Idzik is learning, and also an indication that he blew it. He is a "rookie" GM. I imagine that NFL players are like women...you gotta wine and dine 'em, show 'em respect, yet show 'em that you want 'em. Perhaps if he had let DRC know that the Jets were willing to negotiate, rather than being so unwilling to negotiate, DRC would be a Jet.
Hey here is a thought... What if Rex came to Idzik and something like this: With this DL we don't need elite CBs because opposing QBs just won't have time to throw to deep WRs. Let's make sure we have personnel to cover between the numbers (eg Allen) and we are set. Do you ppl remember how much Giants CBs were shitted upon in 2007? Did it matter their CBs were less then elite if Brady and Rodgers had under 3 seconds to throw?
