Are the Jets bringing back their 80s logo this year?

Dallas' home white unis have been constant. Blue unis have undergone big changes. SF has changed color schemes from cardinal & silver in the 60s to cardinal and gold, to deeper, sharper colors in 200os, plus major pants' stripe changes. GB has made subtle changes to stripe patters and deepness of colors(probably related to type of material used) since the 60s, while keeping the same basic uni design. From the inception of silver & black in 1963, Oak made only a slight change in the color of the numbers on road unis for one year in 1970. The Colts added gray pants and trim for a few years in the 80s, but the basic design has been constant since the mid 50s. Cleveland also had about 10 years of orange pants in the 70s, but has been constant since '85. Bears have made trim changes and added colored pants on and off since the 80s. Chiefs have only made subtle stripe changes, changes to numeral font and varied on wearing red pants over the years. Redskins were very constant from mid-70s to about early 2000s( I recall the 2002 opening game vs the Jets when they wore white pants with white jerseys for he first time in years. Steelers have only changed their number font since going to black with gold pants around 1971. (same uni design but white pants on the road in the early 70s). Texans have been rather constant for their limited history. Jets have had no changes in design since 1998, except for pants & sock color.

The remaining teams have had major changes over the years

Anyone interested in the history of the pro football uni over the years should check out this website:

Yeah, that is correct. Dallas has made major changes to their blue uniforms. Remember their jerseys with the big stars on the shoulders? That was in homage to their 60s uniforms. Other than the number fonts, their white jerseys have remained untouched since the late 60s.

The Steelers made numerous changes until the Noll era.

    Etc.

Actually Kansas City has been pretty much consistent since they became the Chiefs back in 1963.

Have always like those unis. Classic and never-changing.

i dont like new uniforms, not one single bit. i would love the old jets 80s uniforms as they are the ones they wore when i started liking the jets.

yes i think the unis are a little blah and boring. yes i think the helmet and logo are a bit outdated.

however if they decided to make a change at this point it would be a complete fucking abortion... so i am torn on the uniform change situation.

I know we have really nice uni's since we went back to the 60's era uni's but the one thing I would change is getting rid of the stripes in the pants.

I hate the 80's unis. I associate them with futility. At best, I could dig them as a throwback once or twice a year.

I like our unis now, but don't love them. I'd be all for an overhaul, but I can't see anything but a total bastardization.

  7. I'm not saying it's a magical cure or that the WR's are gonna catch more passes w/ a uni change but it can be effective in creating a new culture. That's exactly what the Jets are going through right now. There have been alot of similar culture changes that included a modified logo/uniform

Not everybody hates the Nike Combat thing happening in football. Other sports are much more experimental & adventurous w/ alternate uniforms. I,for one like it quite a bit. It's a way for franchises to express themselves as well as market. In a time where so much of what we love about the game is leaving in the name of overzealous corporate security..why NOT embrace a progressive idea that adds some theater to the game?

I'm also really sick of hearing about how classic the Jets uni's are & how important it is to keep the tradition. What tradition? Mediocrity?? Namath happened over 40 years ago in a completely different time & era. We're not the Giants. We don't have the pedigree or the history. One of the things that MAKES the Jets stand out in New York is that they ARE more progressive. What's more progressive than a powerful Nike combat 3rd jersey worn 3-4 times a year?

Cheers. Thanks for the info. I know some subtle changes, like stripes or pants have been made by most, if not all, the teams. What I was referring to was complete changes like the Bucs, Vikings, Jets, Giants, Broncos, etc.. I`m also talking about the modern day NFL and not prior to say the 50`s era. I`m pretty sure just about every team has changed since the 50`s aside from maybe Cleveland and Indy/Balt Colts. Thanks again for that link. Gonna check it out. As for me, I prefer to stick with traditional things.

I do think the Bucs improved in their unis. The Rams, even though they have changed quite a bit, yet remain quite traditional imo. I loved their old blue/white scheme but liked it more when they added the yellow. Not so much with their more recent scheme though. I still think the Rams have one of the best, if not the best, helmets/unis in the league. Probably influenced by them some when I was a kid. They just looked awesome lining up at scrimmage with those horns on the helmets and horns on the sleeves.

So it would actually be really easy to replace the Hunter Green new style decals and put the old decals on for a game, maybe one right before or after the buy. I think that would be cool.

Yes .. exactly, at the very least.

And someone else made a good point to the old timers. We won 1 single super bowl in our history. The idea of our current uni having any "mystique" is laughable. Not fair to be compared to Cowboys, Raiders, Steelers, Bears, Packers, Chiefs, etc. Its a joke. Our uniforms are A. Boring and dull and B. Have no mystique lol.

So while I do not propose a complete overhaul, I would not be opposed to it, on an alternate basis. These new school designs ... hey u old timers may prefer the bland look with the inaccurate idea that it represents some glorified time .. but I happen to think that the Broncos, Texans, Seahawaks, Panthers, and Jags looks are kinda cool and catchy.

I just feel like you can do so much with a "Jet" themed logo if u get a talented designer on board. As previously mentioned, the current logo has no symbol or suggestion toward a "Jet" in any way. Its stupid. At least our 80s logo had that really cool Jet symbol on top of the spelling from the "J". I think that was as cool as it got. And to associate that logo with losing .... sorry but there were some damn good teams in the 80s and brilliant play coming from the likes of Gastineau, Lyons, Shuler, Walker, Toon, McNeil, Salaam, etc. I am completely for bringing that back as an alternate uni, or at least helmet decal switch a few times a year. And id like to see a complete re-design if done right.

Im not sure but i think in terms of merch sales the Jets rank out of the top 10 snd for a NY team that is unacceptable.
And this is not speculation that something is in the works we can see on Woody Johnsons instagram page last August that he specificLly said they were looking at bringing back the 80s 90s logo and/or uni.

You just outed yourself. Our current uniforms does allow the franchise to express itself - it allows them to say "We're a professional football team that takes itself seriously and isn't more worried about a bunch of irrelevant nonsense than we are worried about winning games and eventually a championship."

What tradition? Winning. We won ... a championship ... 40 years ago in that uniform. It was arguably the most important game in the history of not only the franchise, but the league (as it practically forced the merger). If you don't realize the franchise has some tradition to be proud of, that's your failing, not the uniform's.

Stop watching MSNBC and grow up.

  12. Winning? C'mon man. You can't say that w/ a straight face. Don't force me to bash on the history of the team I love.Please.

I never said to get rid of the classic uniform. And I most certainly respect the uniforms the 68 team was wearing. I just don't think something that happened over 40 years ago should prevent this franchise from expanding itself. I have a higher standard for what this franchise could be. I want them to strive for more. If that door opens with some new imagery..I think they should do it.

Maybe it's time to make a choice about what kind of football team you want to be. One that people think of like this:[IMG]

Or one that people think of like this:[IMG]

I gotta ask if you grew up with the current logo or th '80s logo? I grew up with the '80s logo and when we got rid of it I was thrilled. It was deeply attached to an abysmal record of failure and disappointment. That said, I would like to see us use these as our throwback uni. The Titans uniform is sooooo ugly. It looks like a group of very large high schoolers are playing an NFL game. I hate to admit I even enjoy the games less (unless we win) because those unis are such a distraction for me.

I see '80s logo and current (Namath) logo, in that order. Still, I'd take the bumbling Jet over our impersonation of the Browns helmet: a canvas of nothing divided by a stripe (or is it stripes?).

This logo is okay. I wouldn't be opposed to it being used as a throwback, but the love some people have for it is a little too much.

Except for the 80's helmet logo, this is probably the most hideous uniform I have ever seen. Worse than the black mixed in crap of the early 2000's. I'll never forget seeing a DSlob jersey with black mixed in and how horrible it was. It made me hate the player before he failed for the team.
