Cap space is never a bad thing. It opens up options and possibilities throughout the year. If the Jets had blown their cap space on average to above average players they'd have flattened out the season in a big way. Spend $18M in the defensive secondary and $14M on WR's and suddenly the Jets are sitting there with about $5M above rookies and they're still a bunch of question marks away from being a playoff team. That would have sucked big time. Particularly given that few of the people available to sign were actually plus players. Jairus Byrd may look really good given what we have played at FS over the last half dozen years but the second coming of Ed Reed he is not.
Part of our problem here is the unrealistic expectations we all held. We all looked at the free agent list and made a wish list of all the top guys at positions we need and expected to sign them all. What we forgot is that there are 31 other teams interested in signing good football players, and one team can't just have their dibbs, this isn't a video game.
That and I think it's pretty evident our GM won't do deals that will cripple them down the road. Sure he could pull a Miami or old school Redskins offseason but last I checked that gets you nowhere fast.
And we went 8-8. What did we do last year? The secondary is a great thing to have but it is secondary to many other great things to have, not least of which is a great QB.
Pointing out incorrectness doesn't amount to negativity; it's factual. As for FA 2015 we need some irrational optimism for Cam, Kaep, Dalton, AJ Green, Demaryius Thomas, Jordy Nelson, Dez Bryant, Jordan Cameron, and/or Richard Sherman (although I'd prefer Earl SEAshirt).
I know some liked LaFell @AdamSchefter: And now Patriots have reached agreement on a three-year deal with former Panthers WR Brandon LaFell, per source.
The really good players don't hit free agency very often. That's why there is such a premium on stockpiling them through the draft. You want to be the team keeping them off the market not the team with it's nose pressed to the window pane and unable to get any closer than that.
Wow wtf Bad for us. I feel bad for Cam now Carolina needs pretty much an entire new receiving core. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hence "irrational". I would argue that Cameron or Green could force their way out, and that Seattle prioritizing Earl over Sherman could lead to Sherman's displeasure and exit. Cameron is overall more likely to leave the unstable, ever-evolving Browns than Miller is to leave DEN IMO. It's also too early to predict franchise tagging with the exception of a few(assuming that's the dilemma)
Yeah surprisingly their situation is way worse than ours @AdamSchefter: Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn all gone from Carolina now. And left at WR for the Panthers is...
What better year to lose your journeymen receivers and try to replace the 35 year old great one? I doubt very much that the Panthers thought Ginn or LaFell could catch 75+ balls for them. So they'll go very young this year and probably run the ball more than they did last year and hope that one or two of the draftees catches lightning in a bottle. They have 28 and 60 at this point. That could easily be Cooks/Beckham/Robinson on the 28 and Matthews/Landry/Moncrief on the 60.
I can safely say we no longer have the worst WR corps, carolina lost theirs in its entirety. Maybe they can grab Holmes? yes, yes its a deep class but one can't rely on rookies THAT much, they need some vets. maybe they do snatch Jones from us... not the worse thing in the world, but still.
Amazing how people can shit all over Id Simply amazing as to how many people don't get that. Some here shit all over the GM for not signing every Tom Dick and Harry out in free agency thinking they can help this team at any cost. Near term bullshit mentality.
I forgot Holmes was even a free agent lol he hasn't been talked about at all. Hopefully they do take him and leave Jones for us. He wasn't very well liked down there last year though.
patriots keep getting better with like no cap space, theres no way we can keep up even if we have more than twice to spend its almost not fair, everyone wants to play for the evil empire
