I'm sure the personal stuff had something to do with this, but I think the $12-$13 million a year for a CB was more of the issue.
Who knows if that's true or not. There were a ton of reports also saying Revis wanted to play for the Pats for awhile now. Revis could easily be leaking that to get Jets fans upset at Idzik and Woody.
It seems the Tanny years where the Jets always made the flashy move rather than just the right one have corrupted the minds of these poor same old jet fans. I can't believe that any fan is complaining that the Jets are being prudent with their money and cap space rather than splurging on names. This summer has signified a shift in policy within the Jets front office of focusing on building a team for the long term. We can sign up our best players we've brought through from the draft and keep them a jet long term while we fill in the holes with smart free agent signings. Guys like Mo Wilk can get the deals they deserve while the Jets don't sacrifice other areas or leave the team short in space. Conceivably we could front load all these re-signings were going to make to use the majority of our cap now while leaving the back end with low cap numbers allowing for further improvement. We're looking to build depth, have players competing for roster spots and general franchise improvement year on year. We were 8-8 last year with major holes across the roster. We had a lot of rookie starters and youngsters playing a high number of snaps. We will be a year wiser and more experienced with a load of new blood coming in the draft with holes being filled methodically on the roster. I'm more excited by what we've been doing in the front office than I have been in years. I honestly don't understand peoples concerns right now. I thought most people would understand that what we're doing is building a sustainable product for the long run.
This is exactly right. Mehta, Meyers, Cimini - these beat writers don't have any credibility. Over the past few years, it's clear that their "sources" aren't as reliable as this forum. On topic, it'd be nice if we could grab Brown and Browner
I highly doubt the Jets were on the top of his list. Obviously Idzik isn't one to be held hostage by a player, and he experienced that first hand. Mehta is a tabloid writer.
I remember the " day in the life of " threads on Tanny when we signed all those difference makers..when really none of us ( myself included ) wanted to admit we had zero depth and overpaid. Now we have the opposite a very level GM who wont be swayed by the whims of his HC...thats how it should be . We will sign either Jones or Sanders as WR that will do for me...$16m for Pettigrew....thank god we avoided that. AC will be back for a reduced sum and we will again draft a CB in first 3 rds building for the future. We are 2 years from being a contender and I think Idzik gets that...solid FA , another productive draft and then FA next year will put us in place This place at times is like the acts of a spoilt kid..i want it and I want it now.. Under Tany we would have overpaid for 2 or 3 players who were not gamechangers.... not one player we have missed except Revis was elite and we are not a CB away from competing ...yet
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN 1m WR Emmanuel Sanders making 3rd visit: Chiefs today. Originally set to visit Jets, but #NYJ had scheduling conflict. Nothing rescheduled yet
I'm sure they had an idea of what he would cost. I mean Revis wasn't going to sign anywhere for a discount. Plus, I'm not 100% buying Manish's report that the Jets were Revis' first choice. That sounds like some shit Geiger & Co. are spreading to make the Jets look bad.
Amen. 16M/4y doesn't sound bad, but for that fact that his performance doesn't exactly merit that kind of payday. Glad that Idzik passed on him. The Jets have Cumberland and Sudfeld under contract, and the draft's deep at the TE position. Definitely not worried about it as much as corner, but to be fair, the coaching staff and FO aren't exactly forthcoming with their plans at the position, or their evaluations of in-house talent (Walls, anyone?).
With all the talk about free agents being available and the chance to infuse much need talent on this team, seeing Idzik's inactivity really had me bummed out. I guess I let myself be conned by these know nothing bloggers and beat writers plus a boat load of wishful thinking on my part, which brought out the darksider in me. Never the less I have returned to my normal cheery self again. I am still not going gaga over the signing of Eric Decker, but he is an upgrade at the WR position. I guess rookies will fill out the rest of the roster spots. How fast can they develop not everyone is a Sheldon Richardson. Out of 13 draft picks maybe 8 will stick and 4 or 5 will start? Well I'm looking forward to who this draft picks will be! Onward to the draft!
Yeah, but we got to two championship games because of it..ultimately we paid for it but nobody was screaming about it when we were 4 qtrs away from the SB. Actually we didn't even pay for it. Last year we couldn't sign free agents and still went 8-8.
Landry is barely a starting SS and with the lack of an even passable FS it just means teams are going to throw in his direction all year again where he's a huge liability in pass coverage. At least if there were an FS it would help Landry/Allen on the other side, but there isn't. Guard is a nightmare. Winding up with Colon again is a punishment not anything to be looking forward to, but he might be best case scenario and that still doesn't even factor Winters' atrocious play all last year at LG. Cromartie is negotiating with Cardinals he'll probably be gone today. I don't see Idzik ponying up for DRC or Nicks. Tillman has publicly stated he won't play safety. Finley is a biq question mark with injuries as is Rice. Thurmond is a nickel back which isn't needed, Cook isn't very good. Other than DRC Cro or Nicks, none of whom will likely be signed by us, none of those guys will necessarily even come in and make a big positive impact. And that's being optimistic that Idzik even ends up signing a couple of them instead of digging even deeper down the scrap heap.
