Kenny Britt hasn't broken 800 yards once or 50 receptions in a season in his career. He hasn't played a full 16 games since his rookie years. In my book he's not a 1. He's a hopeful hits his potential and plays and becomes a #1. Nicks has Victor Cruz next to him who has out caught him the last 3 seasons, out gained him the last 3 seasons, and out scored him the last 3 seasons. These two struggle as much to be a "#1" as much as Decker does. In my book, there were no #1 receivers on the market. There were wide receivers who at one time were the first wide receiving option on their team at one point and time before last year, but nobody who played like a #1 last year or in the last 2-3 years. You can criticize Decker, that's why we have a message board, it just seems the knock is that he's not a "#1 receiver" and then everybody lists guys who weren't #1 receivers last years as possible upgrades over Decker.
on Nicks, Cruz is great but he was a 1,000 yd WR before Cruz and had his best season before Cruz. Look at Cruz's #s w/ a healthy Nicks vs. w/ a banged up Nicks- HUGE difference. w/ that said I love the Decker signing, I don't care if he isn't a "#1", it was an excellent signing that significantly upgraded our offensive talent.
Nicks put up numbers before Cruz got there. The difference is that when teams played the Giants the number 1 CB always guarded Nicks, he was the guy they tried to stop. Decker always had the luxury of being the number 2 guy and playing across from Thomas a guy defenses actually game plan to stop. Decker benefitted from those double teams that Thomas drew. Cruz benefitted from Nicks presence because he got the most attention. The only thing against Nicks is health. But IMO when healthy Nicks>>Decker.
He was a 1000 yard receiver before Cruz which is now 4 years ago I think. Overall his play has dropped since then. I think Cruz and nicks both benefit from each other similarly to how Holmes and Braylon did in 2010. I wouldn't mind signing nicks also to the jets, but in general I don't buy that nicks is more of a #1 than decker right now and then the logic that decker is a bad signing because he isn't a #1.
Well if nicks faced the number 1 consistently with Cruz, doesn't it just show facing top corners has taken him out of the #1 wr production? I still don't think top corners consistently picked him to cover and I think right now nicks and decker basically have the same potential to be a #1 but neither qualify as 1 currently. Nicks because his production has dropped and decker because of the system and talent around him. Either way it looks like nicks was visiting SF so we might not be able to add him.
his production has dropped b/c of some injuries. is that going to be the case going forward? it's a red flag but he has drawn the top guys on D, Cruz and Decker have not so I understand that point.
In his healthy years as the number 1 he had 2 1000 yard seasons. When we played the Giants in 2011 we were focused on stopping Nicks and Revis guarded him all day. It's no coincidence that Cruz production slipped once Nicks went down for the year. Cruz had a better year this year due to teams having to double Nicks. What's crazy is that Nicks "dogged it" and still put up 800+ yards. He's more explosive than Decker and he has better hands. He's faster, bigger, stronger.
Nice signing for the Jets IMO. He's not a #1 receiver, but if/when the jets sign a James Jones or the like, they will at least force teams to pick their poison when it comes to doubling a WR creating a 1 on 1 with one of the receivers. I noticed Nicks mentioned here. While he is extremely talented, the last thing the jets need is another diva WR who's performance rarely matches the bullshit and talk.
I hate making statements like this but the suggestion that Kenny Britt is "more of a #1" or better than Decker pretty much wrecks your credibility.
Well said. The only think I'd add is that Lee is not enough. Rook receivers need time and receivers often get hurt. I'd want Jones/Sanders as well. Playing with waiver scrubs was Geno's undoing last year. This year that has to change.
Do you think 2 years, 10 million is too much? Cause that seems beyond reasonable and is the reality of what he's actually owed. (that or he's worth the greater amount he's owed from that point on)
Its basically a 2 year deal and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th year will come down to whether the Jets want to pay him which basically means Decker has to prove his worth over the next two seasons, he cant take the money and run.
Wait, is there another Britt you are talking about or Kenny Britt? THE Kenny Britt from the Titans via Rutgers? Hahahahaaaa you're funny. _
Yup the same Britt that was their number 1 receiver for the last 3 or 4 years. Yup that one. What year did Decker prove himself as a capable number 1 receiver?
I trust you realize that being at the top of an awful depth chart makes you "number 1" in name only and being 2 or 3 or 4 on a very good depth chart can actually mean you are a better receiver? Stop looking at stats and start watching players. Kenny Britt is craptastic. Decker is thrice the player as Britt, but because Britt played on an awful team with awful receivers does not make him better. Said differently, being the number 1 WR on the Titans is not that same as being number 1 on the Broncos. BTW, Kenny Britt is nowhere NEAR their number 1 WR. Hahahahaaa. Nice try. _
I don't understand why people are insisting on defining whether or not Decker is a "#1 receiver". First of all there is no question that Decker upgrades our receiving corps. We desperately needed upgrade that unit, and still do although less so now, and we did. Now a bunch of people want to whine about him not being a "#1 receiver"? Secondly, the term #1 receiver is ambiguous at best. Is he Calvin Johnson? Obviously not, but no one near that level is available and we needed to upgrade. We did.
