Idzik dropped the ball big time I don't care what anyone says, there is no plan so stop saying there is.Id love to be a fly on the wall in Florham Park right now
That's not what I meant...Woody does not make that announcement without having sat down and talked with Idzik first. I refuse to believe Idzik wanted a different guy and Woody told him to "pound sand" you are stuck with Rex. Sooo....there you go.
The free agency process is used mainly by failed regimes as a backup plan for their inability to develop talent or maintain a coherent plan over a period of years. When you see a team make a big splash in free agency it usually means the GM or HC is going to get fired if things don't get better soon. Occasionally it means a team has caught lightning in a bottle and is trying to get over the top before the bottle breaks. The good teams generally fill a hole now and then, usually with a mid-tier vet who is dependable and comes cheap and will fit in to the team well.
I was looking for the Jets to address CB and safety, so far everyone linked to the Jets has signed elsewhere, I like the build through the draft approach, but if we are still talking about the passing defense giving up huge pass plays after next season, then I wont be happy with his approach
Maybe Idzik is trying to tell Rex that leaving his corners out on an island too often is not the way to go. Selling out to stop the run may be good at times but dropping into zone may be effective in other situations. If he feels that Rex is becoming too predictable he may be sending a message.
I will say that part of being a GM is negotiating skills. Mike T is a trained attorney and is among the best at this. Not sure if Idzik is all that great considering he seemed to have gotten played by Vontae Davis. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
All I can say is Idzik better hit at least one home run in this draft. A few solid doubles wouldn't hurt either. There are still gaping holes on this roster. Johnny, if you're listening: I am begging for some mid-to-late round picks with upside. At that point I don't care about off the field stuff or measurables or character concerns. Give me at least one gem: an overlooked talent with breakout potential. No more Scotty McKnights or Bilal Powells or (fill in any name from the last 20 years) please.
Man you are rough on Bilal. I wouldn't compare him to Scotty McKnight. I think Bilal was a solid pick. Not a star, but he does a solid job and isn't a wasted pick in my opinion. But you are right, we need to get lucky late and hopefully having more draft picks than usual will help us out.
I think I'm seeing what Idzik is doing here in free agency, and it seems to make sense. (Although, ugh, I would feel better if he'd gotten one of the bigger name corners or Byrd.) When you go out and get the highest priced free agents, it often fails. You have to give them big signing bonuses most of the time, and then they often sit on your roster for 2 - 3 years being unproductive, eating tons of cap space. That corner Asomugha, was one of the biggest free agents, and ended up being lousy. If you swing and miss on those big contracts, it's a big problem that hurts your rebuilding efforts. If you're a team with a wide but closing window (Broncos, Patriots, Saints) then it makes sense to go "all in" and find those last couple of "missing pieces" to try to throw your team over the edge, even if it's risky, even if it will make it hard to improve the team 3 years from now. But it doesn't matter- in 3 years your aging star QB will either be too old, too injured, or decline too much. So you have to make these 1 - 2 years count as much as you can, even at the expense of the longer term, since that long term isn't as bright given the remote chance that your next QB will be anywhere near as good as the one you have now (P. Manning, Brady, or Brees. All of them are HoF QBs, and all of them are approaching 40.) So, in the case of those teams, it makes sense to chase the stars. The Jets are in a different situation completely. We just don't know whether Geno is the answer or not. I hope Geno Smith ends up being a top end QB, but he's definitely nowhere near that level right now. Things could turn south quickly- he could end up continuing his interception-throwing ways, and in that case you have to be prepared to draft another QB after the 2014 season, or rent a free agent with the questionable stats that keep him from being a starter elsewhere, or you trade for someone's backup QB and hope he's more Drew Brees than Matt Flynn. You don't want to go all-in when your QB might be bad. If we invested the cap space into 3 or 4 big-ticket guys, they'd lock up tons of cap space for 2 - 3 years before they become cuttable. To get more guys next year in free agency, you have to restructure guys, making it harder to cut them, too. And inevitably, some guys just get old and decline- but contractually you can be stuck with them, because you needed to restructure them to make cap space. So if some of the big ticket guys don't work out, it's a lot harder to improve the team. It's harder to extend Wilkerson, etc, because of the salary cap. We don't have to do that, because this team does not have a 1 - 2 year Super Bowl window we're trying to maximize. What I think Idzik is doing is pretty much what he said he'd be doing. He's going to rely on the draft to get the core of the team, and use free agency as a way to get strategic upgrades, take low-risk-high-reward gambles, and get complimentary pieces at reasonable prices. When you spread that free agent money around multiple worthy players, the risk decreases (they're not all going to be bad.) You also don't have to pay that big premium, because there is no serious bidding war- and also, other teams have already used up most of their cap space and have a limited ability to get these smaller players. We all want to see the Jets be great this year, but it's going to be a different team building process than what we're used to. We're not going to be in the headlines all the time during free agency and the offseason. It's going to be a bunch of medium and small sized moves, but the sum total will be greater.
I'm a trained attorney and I don't know dick about negotiating employee contracts. Tannenbaum was a doufus from Day 1 through his firing.
He must spend at least 119M which is about 13M more than we already have and before restructuring or cutting Sanchez..the CBA demands it, so at this point it will be interesting to see how he does it with what's left out there. I'm surprised he only has 4M of Decker's deal counting towards this year's cap so he must have something in mind.
Well we seem to have missed out on this, Was really hoping when I woke up this morning this guy would have been signed. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, tight end Brandon Pettigrewhas agreed to terms on a four-year, $16 million deal with $8 million guaranteed to return to the Lions.
Well said! Personally I hope we use our load of cash to sign Wilk... A FA QB wouldn't be a bad thing either.
Even if Wilkerson is signed @11M/yr he's won't cost more than 6-7M against the cap this year. Harrison 4-5 if that. Idzik could go crazy and sign 5 more FAs at this point and still have more than 20M left over after signing draft picks and extending Wilkerson and Harrison. This makes 0 sense.
What is this??? All the info out at the time, including word leaked by other candidates who interviewed for the GM job, was that going in the door they knew Woody was going to keep Rex. That it was part of the deal. If you were a candidate who did not want to keep Rex, you might have still gone for the interview. Maybe as a courtesy. Maybe to see if Woody was serious. But there's no reason whatsoever to think Idzik showed up, said he would take the job but wanted another HC, and at that point Woody would have said forget it. It would never have gotten to that point.
So what was the reason to let Revis go to get a lot of cap space this year? When Sanchez will be cut the Jets would have had nearly $50 mil in cap space. So they signed Decker. They will still have somewhere @ $40 mil in cap space. They won't need that to sign rookies. And they will not fill all of the following in the draft: #1 CB OL TE Another wideout Upgrade at Qb Safety Not to mention a pass rushing LB, help for Powell and Ivory at RB, who is returning kicks?.... That's a very long list to fill with rookies. Did someone actually post a thread about the Super Bowl? I didn't even bother to open it. So, was Idzik's plan to have a payroll well below the cap? Seems right on schedule for that.
