Why should the Jets be interested in a player just because he's from NJ or NY? Austin can't stay healthy and he's older. No thanks.
Finnegan left after the 2011 season, Verner has been starting the last 2 seasons and has been very good. he's not a $`12 mil a year guy, who said that? most teams have cap space, the cap is going up, corners are sought after. he is going to be paid a lot though.
He's 25 years old. I don't have an opinion on his current skill set because I don't watch the Titans if I can help it. That said, it would not be unusual for a scrub at 22 who got significant playing time at 23 and 24 to be a much better player by that time. 21-25 is the golden development time for most NFL players. 26-28 is the prime. 29 is over the hill and 30 is ancient. Superstars break the rules but most other players are bound by them.
Obviously players improve. Players also play well in contract years and then fall off the face of the earth once they cash in. Happens a lot more frequently than not. I just don't think Verner has really proved as much as Revis by a long shot and if we are committed to spending big money on a CB, I'd rather the devil we know in Revis than the unpredictability of giving a big contact to an unestablished player like Verner.
Via M Mehta Asked a Jets source how he would feel about a possible reunion with Darrelle Revis. Response: "Hell yes!" #nyj
Exactly. Finnegan was in this exact situation 2 years ago, and he took the money in StL and did a lot of nothing for them. Not worth the money at all.
The way Cimini said he's a "Jersey guy" and said what high school he went to, as if that matters. I've also seen it on this and other Jets' boards repeatedly. Yes, it's nice if it works out that a player the team likes is from the area, but that shouldn't be a big reason for interesting them in said player.
I'm good with signing Vick. At the very least he's serious competition for Geno. I hope Geno stays even if Vick starts, as I feel Geno could learn a lot under Vick
Idzik is all about competition.. The best player will play Week 1. No way they get Vick and anoint him the starter.
Finnegan was older and had a much better reputation. I have no idea what happened in SL but you can't knock Verner b/c of Finnegan. verner is much more stable than the volatile Finnegan.
@TurnOnTheJets: Just a guess: Rumors & predictions of #Jets interest in Verner and Hawkins have been off-base and they will land neither. Watch Davis at CB
Saying Verner is a stable, safe signing doesn't make it true. He is a huge risk and more likely to bust than not. He is young and unproven in this league. If you want to give him a big money contract based on potential, fine, but don't act like signing him is a safe, no-brainer, move. We could easily be sitting here 2 years from now cursing Verner's name for taking the money and doing jack shit.
