Now a try with the first-pick.com one.
Not the most realistic draft tool, I'd have to say... Still fun though - trade down extravaganza, and a shitty score - but I'd be pretty fucking happy with this:

    Your Picks:
Round 2 Pick 10 (TENN): Odell Beckham, WR, LSU (A)
Round 2 Pick 16 (BALT): Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State (A)
Round 2 Pick 17: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt (B-)
Round 2 Pick 24 (S.F.): Jimmie Ward, SS, Northern Illinois (A)
    Round 3 Pick 5: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington (A)
Round 3 Pick 19 (CLE): Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor (B)
Round 3 Pick 23 (K.C.): Ed Reynolds, FS, Stanford (A)
Round 3 Pick 30 (S.F.): Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin (C+)
    Round 4 Pick 15: E.J. Gaines, CB, Missouri (A)
Round 4 Pick 27 (CLE): Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU (A)
Round 5 Pick 4 (JAX): John Urschel, OG, Penn State (D-)
Round 5 Pick 10 (JAX): James Hurst, OT, North Carolina (B)
Round 5 Pick 14: Ryan Groy, OG, Wisconsin (F)
Round 6 Pick 19: Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon (D)
Round 7 Pick 18: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson (F)

Shazier is not a fit for the Jets. He's way too light and is closer to SS weight than OLB weight. I don't see any way Garoppolo drops that far either, although I'd love to add him at that point. Why waste a 4th round pick on a DT? The Jets have zero need for a DT and no roster space for a DT. Makes no sense imo. I like the rest. Would LOVE adding Lee, ASJ and Adams!

if he bulks up, he could be a really good 3-4 ILB

I don't know anything about the kid, because I don't like Ohio State players in general and I never considered him a fit. Could he put on 30-40 pounds of muscle and not lose his speed/quickness? Does he have the frame to even put on that much weight? Even if he could, the problem would be that in Rex's scheme one of the ILBs has to take on the OGs and do the dirty work inside. Neither Davis or Shazier are or would be ideally suited for that role and their talents would be wasted imo.

I personally believe the Jets need someone that has decent side-line to side-line speed (range) and able to cover down-field as well. I would like for our linebackers to cause fumbles and grab interceptions too. We need to start generating MORE turnovers.

I've seen Shazier in a few games. He's got some range and he's a pretty decent tackler. If he were able to bulk up and maintain his speed he would be an asset in a 3-4 ILB role.

It would be worth a shot. Ask yourself this, whom do you know can cover a RB/TE/slot? I remember seeing Harris out there and it made me scared for my life.

I hear you. I definitely want ILBs with speed who can cover RBs and TEs, I just don't think Shazier is the guy. I don't think Rex would use him at all until he gained the weight and that could take a year or two if then. He may not be able to keep that amount of weight on, it could cause him to lose speed and quickness or could cause him to start getting injured. I see him more of a 4-3 OLB or a SS.

Think Coples. Coples now is a 3-4 OLB in our base defense. Before that he had him in the trenches rushing the passer. We also run 4-3 sets as well so you cannot rule out a good football player that could be a fit. Rex will find a way to plug in him. Versatility is big in today's league kid ran a unofficial 4.36 at his pro day.

Eventually Rex could transition him inside to a 3-4 OLB, but having him out there on special teams, getting reps on defense in 4-3 sets can help out team. We need to get faster.

There are plenty of good football players in this draft. There is absolutely zero reason or need to try to stretch to fit some player in and find a way to use him. None. IMO that's just wasted energy and inefficient and not the smart way to do things.

This makes absolutely no sense. The draft is the place to look for versatile players that can contribute to the defense. How many linebackers have the speed Shazier has? Not many if you ask me. Not saying the Jets should draft him, but if Rex sees something in him, guess what? He will draft him. You should also remember that the Jets aren't a true 3-4 defense.

You are close-minded for making this comment. You explore every option in the draft, lmao @ wasted time and potential.

The draft is for assembling the best talent you can get for your picks. Positional need is important but if you keep taking players at positions you need and giving away 5% value on each pick, well in the end you wind up with a team that's not good enough to get where you want.

If the Jets draft exclusively based on the holes they have heading into 2014 they'll wind up reaching for several players and giving up substantial value in the process. Then in 2015 they'll have holes to fill, some of which might have been filled by a better draft pick in 2014, and if they repeat the process they'll continue to see their talent base decline.

The question on Shazier is whether or not he's the best player available when the Jets draft and whether he fits what Rex is trying to do on defense. He's a bit under-sized for a 3-4 LB but pretty well proportioned for a 4-3 MLB or ROLB. So assuming that Shazier is BPA at the pick in question you have to figure out whether he works for the Jets in the 2014 scheme. Then if you're Idzik you need to look 2 or 3 years down the road and ask yourself whether he's good enough that taking him is a priority, given the Jets LB talent and the reality that another defensive coach and scheme may be in play by then.

You can't pass on a guy that you think is going to be great to reach for a guy you need.

He would have to be the BPA for the Jets to even consider him (3rd round which would be insane), he can play in a 3-4 as an ILB, and he just needs to bulk up.

Shazier is 6'2 229, get him at 245 and he's the same weight as NaVorro Bowman from the 49ers. Bowman is 6'0 flat btw.

The Jets have played enough 4-3 to have him play MLB and ROLB on some snaps. Shazier could also contribute on special teams.

How do you know that Shazier at 245 is as good a player as Shazier at 229? That's a 7% increase in body weight. Walking in the door at Ohio State he weighed 198. In this age of designer bodies it's easy to look at somebody and project them based on desirable changes for what you are doing. Usually it is better to look at them for what they are and figure out if that works for you.

So you are implying he won't increase his weight and get stronger over the course of his NFL career? Everything I am mentioning is strictly hypothetical anyway. I'm sure draft scenarios have occurred similar to this one and I'm sure it has worked out at one point. My point is you can't overlook things like this and you can't be close minded in a talented draft.

No, I'm just suggesting that one of the factors the Jets have to take into account is that asking Shazier to bulk up may not work out the way they planned in the end.

And yes you're right the Jets should be looking at where the talent is in the draft and hoping that their needs line up with the talent when they pick. This is one of those drafts where being able to trade down at a key pick might well turn a good draft into a great draft.

As far as what Rex wants to do on defense ... I just refer back to his comments on Jonathon Vilma. If you have an outstanding player, regardless of size ... you find a way to use him. I believe he also proved that with Sheldon Richardson ... whom nobody seemed to think he was a good fit for "Rex's scheme".

Rex can and will make it work - just give him the tools.

Every year, I wish the Jets would trade down. If Johnny Football can fall to 18, we can trade our pick and get some good value.
