He only costs a million a year. This is to provide depth and consistency with the QB. Cumberland had some very nice chunk plays for us this past year and is a contributor. If we can land another TE in the draft in the later rounds (I really do not believe in drafting one high, you build a quality team from inside out) I believe we will be in good shape.

I really like this move for depth. I'm still all for picking a highly touted TE in the draft in available.

That was the right deal. He's a decent #2 TE. We just need to compliment him with a stud. Maybe we can break Hernandez out of prison and disguise his identity, then give him a cheap deal.

It's great that the money is low because that also means Idzik knows he isn't a number 1 TE.

Wow, what a deal for the Jets.

Having a "cap/contract guy" as GM has its benefits. If Cumberland does take the next step, he will be a steal.

You're messing with me, right? Mo Lewis, Marvin Jones, Vilma, Farrior, Clifton are some classic Jets LBs. I'm sure I am forgetting some but those were damn fine LBers. Also, we have had a few more recent ones show a few signs as well. It feels like the NYJ can draft LB at will. The other positions not so much.

Now THIS is the strongest indication that I've seen that we will be bringing in another TE. If the Jets saw Cumberland as true starter material they'd be paying him better. The fact this is a bargain indicates to me that, as others have mentioned, Cumb is a depth player. I don't put much faith in these 'reports' about which FAs we have shown interest in and I put zero stock in draft reports. But I would be shocked now if we didn't sign, draft, or even trade for someone. Or do the Jets feel Sudfeld is the answer? That would be awesome but I didn't see enough to judge.

Why would you pay someone more than you have to? You don't give out extra money because he's a starter, you give them whatever it takes.

I think after Tannenbaum gave out those contracts (notably Sanchez's), we're thrilled to see competence.

NFL Radio last night had an interview with Cumberland. Going into it they were saying that the Jets are still looking to add another TE. The names they mentioned the Jets having interest in were Pettigrew (again) and Jermichael Finley if his health can be assured. They also mentioned Shaub as the main QB interest.

I'd be very happy if they sign Pettigrew or Chandler, but would also be equally happy if they drafted ASJ, Niklas or Fiedorowicz. I'd also be happy with Ebron, but would rather go WR in the 1st and take the TE later.

Smart move by Cumberland, too. Take reasonable contracts. Dont rock the boat. Rinse, repeat. He will hve a long and - if he invests wisely - very lucrative career. Despite being not-a-star. Win-win. The guys who 'get paid' after their first big year tend to end up getting cut before receiving the full value of their contract. Very likely Cumberland gets full-value.

Exactly! And if he were real starter material and could command more money he would have or he would have explored FAgency. Yes, you always try to pay a reasonable number, but no one in the NFL today is taking backup money to start unless that's all they could get when they signed their last contract.

I agree as well. He is wise not to push. If he proves me wrong then great but I don't see it and I have little doubt that what he has shown is what he is. That isn't bad per se. I mean the dude is an NFL player, right? But I just don't want him to be the TE we rely on as our starter.

u sir are correct...too many times these guys price themselves out of a contract and end up in a spot thats not conducive to success. kudos to the player this time.

But can he do any two of those at once?

Baker was smooth out there. While he wasn't dominating like a Gronk (monster genes) or Gonzalez (monster talent) Baker was good in his on right. Cumberland looks very, erm, wonky out there at times. For example, when he catches I've seen him lose his balance and basically fall/run down the field. Things like that. It just doesn't inspire confidence.

No, you've got the right guy... although I think his hair might be a much higher percentage of his weight. He is like Thing from the Addams family. To be fair, he showed some real flashes but I can guess that without some meat on his bones he is probably more of a hybrid WR/TE than a strict TE and probably not a major blocking threat. I'm sure he can be a fine speed bump in passing situations and all that but on running downs I have a hard time imagine Thing running anyone over. Now he might be able to envelope them in hair, but is that interference? ;)
