TE is also one of the fast return positions with players often hitting their peak in the 2nd season. So it's quick production followed by fairly quick decline. That makes drafting a TE in the middle rounds one of the most productive things you can do in terms of what you will get on the field right away.

Nice. But I fully expect us to draft a TE still. Cumberland isn't a starting TE.

Was very excited to hear he is coming back. I thought he was one of our most improved players last year.

I'm happy with this. Decent speed for the position, decent hands, good route running. Blocking is just average but he's a solid #2 and a serviceable #1 if we can't get anyone else. I'd still be happier with a better TE but we could do a lot worse.

Cumberland is a quality player that has been developing nicely for us. To say he doesn't have the ability to contribute in more than just a secondary role is comical to me.

He can catch, run, and block. He will be someone that helps this team out in more ways then he gets credit for.

He reminds of Chris Baker and I loved that guy.

I was thinking he was obviously the next Gronk but I guess you disagree?

First off let me start by telling all the TGG fans how very happy I am that we did resign Cumberland. It was the right thing to do for the offense and a win-win situation for the team for the reasons many of you pointed out. Tier 1 or not, this is the right action to develop depth in a position of critical need. He can provide continuity and has plenty good attributes to offer. Further, IMHO his signing has nothing whatsoever to do with our priorities going into the draft. This move does not negate the continuing need for a Tier #1 TE everyone seems to drool over these days. It does however, gives us a little more flexibility as to who and when we will target the TE in the Draft.
If anything, locking Cumberland might benefit the draft, precluding the outside chance of us overreaching for a TE, when we have other perhaps more critical needs i.e. WR, OLB, yes even QB and at par with OT and Safety. Signing Cumberland was perfect insurance with much upside and little to no risk.

Idzik, I like the way you think.

I don't get his guy Sudfeld. He looks about 9 feet tall and weights about 60 pounds, half of which is hair. How can this guy be a TE? We'll see i guess. Or am I thinking about that Salad receiver?

Just think, if he hits it big he'll be Sudsquatch.

I think Idzik is going from a standpoint that he wants to sign free agents to prevent the team from going into the draft with needs.

If one is to go into the draft with a plan to attain the best prospective players from a raw talent standpoint (the touted BPA practice) then one cannot have no answer at all at any given position.

desperation is bred from dire need, Cumberland (proven stable option) and even sudfeld (high upside prospect) prevents that feeling of desperation at the TE position.

now what he'll do about the WR position may be a whole different thing...

Mehta is reporting it's 3 years 3.7 million... I think that is perfect and less than I expected... was thinking 3 years 6 million or something like that

    3.7 over 3 years?

dude, thats ridiculously cheap. hell thats less a year on average than what he made last year! (1.3 mill) I thought he'd make at least twice that amount.

if he exceeds expectations... the jets scored huge.

You are spot on. WR is a bit trickier because free agency is part of our equation, and he may be limited based on available talent/price

This is what I have been saying all offseason. If you sign quality guys in holes we need, the less you have to worry about come draft day. You can stick to your mantra of drafting bpa and not worry so much that the guy may not be a dire need
