Jairus Byrd is seeking at least $9 million a year according to rotoworld.

I am completely on board with giving Nicks no more than $3-4 million. He's been on a decline since his second year in the league, regardless of the numbers.

That kind of takes him out of contention. He's got to be Troy Polamalu/Ed Reed in their primes good to justify that kind of a contract.

After 5 years in the NFL Troy Polamalu had been to 4 Pro Bowls and was All-Pro once already on his way to 4 All-Pro's including year 6. Every season he started for the Steelers in the first 5 he was a Pro Bowler.

Ed Reed had 3 Pro Bowls and 2 All-Pros, missing the Pro Bowl his rookie year and the year he got hurt and played only 10 games.

Polamalu's AV in his 4 years as a starter: 47
Reed's AV in his 5 years as a starter: 55
Byrd's AV in his 5 years as a starter: 35

He's not even close to either of those guys early in his career. Good player? Yes! Worth a superstar contract? No!

Comparing players based upon pro-bowls is stupid. Cromartie made it this season. I would be curious to see how the players graded out using Pro Football Focus but I dont subscribe so I cant compare the players.

I've learned the #Jets have serious interest in Bengals restricted free agent WR Andrew Hawkins, per source.

AV takes a bunch of contributions into effect. When Ed Reed has an AV number of 18 in a peak season and Jairus Byrd has an AV number of 9 in his best season it really says something.

It says that Reed had 9 Int's and 16 passes defensed that year. It says that the Ravens defense was 3rd overall that season and allowed the fewest 1st Downs. It says that their passing defense was #1 that year.

It says that Byrd had 5 Int's and 6 passes defensed that year. It says that the Bills was 22nd overall that season and allowed the 4th most 1st Downs. It says that their passing defense was 10th in the NFL that year.

Byrd had a good season. He made the Pro Bowl. But his contributions weren't close to the same level as Ed Reeds were for the 2008 Ravens.

One of the important things in free agency is that you not overpay for a player because of scarcity. That's how teams really screw themselves in the end. They bought high because they thought the guy they were buying was the only option. In fact there are always options that are flying low on the radar screen. They're not the best guys for the job but they don't cost you an arm and a leg and they don't make it harder for you to build a real team.

Don't get me wrong. If a 28 year old Ed Reed was on the market I might well give him the $9M a year. I'm just not willing to pretend that Jairus Byrd is Ed Reed and give him the same deal.

Interesting, seems to be an upside type move. He's supposed to be quick and fast, but hasn't really broken into the Bengals has a consistent receiver for them. We need depth and game breakers.

Guessing the Jets believe they can turn him into a consistent weapon

Yeah that's what I see from him too. It's a good potential move if we can get him. We don't really have that type of guy you can toss a ball too and he might go 50-60 yards for a TD

Why not go after Hester? This team hasn't had a decent punt returner in a decade. Hester is the greatest return man of all-time and he's available. I say give him a shot

IMO they cut Hester a year too early which is better than a year too late. He's turning 32 next year, returned a career-high number of kicks, career-low number of punts, had one very good game against the Vikings (250 yards on 5 kicks; take out this game and it brings his average down to 25.3, or 13th in Yds/Rtn last year), and scored his only TD (punt return) against probably the league's worst punting team (Washington).

I still think Nicks would be a good option for WR.

I know he has been banged up throughout his career, but he is a legit #1 outside presence when healthy. He is 26 six years old and entering the prime of his NFL career. Plus, how many WRs play every game each year?? Injury comes with the position. Calvin Johnson missed time in 4 of his 7 seasons. Dez Bryant missed games in 2 of his 4 seasons. Julio Jones in 2 of his 3 seasons. Andre Johnson in 4 of 11 seasons. The list goes on and on.

4 years, $26 million (7,7,6,6) Guarantee the first two years, $14 million.

Hesters more of a luxury to me. He is not a need, lets address the needs first before going after a luxury.

    I would give:

    Nicks $7
    Byrd $10
    Browner Vet min.
    Sydney Rice $3

    Draft Ebron

Hester would be a great pickup as he still has some juice in the tank. He would be a big upgrade in the ST dept. for at least 2 years. Also a weapon on offense in different packages. Interested to see what his camp wants in terms of $$.

Jets, Packers among the teams interested in former Vikings TE John Carlson, who is visiting the Cardinals today.
