Well you don't want a wide out similar to Kerley (rule out any slot-type WRs in the 1st round). Other then that, I would assume it wouldn't matter as long as that player is the BPA. I would hope the Jets get wide receivers to compliment Kerley as well. How about pairing up Matthews / Lee / Cooks (1 out of the 3) with Brandon Coleman / Donte Moncrief / Physical wide receiver?
he will definitely be gone, no doubt, the last stop to any evans slide will be the ravens who are right in front of us.
I think Marty is going to have a lot of input of the type of WR he's looking for in his west coast system. Cooks would be a really good fit and Davante Adams has also showed he can turn short passes into big plays. We need an explosive player with speed to turn short passes into big gains, which will help Geno.
IMO, no. Neither Kerley nor Nelson are that good that it should stop the Jets from taking the bpa WR. Don't get me wrong, I like Kerley a lot. He's one of the few players I really wanted the Jets to draft over the last 10 years that they actually drafted. That said, however, he isn't as good as I had hoped/thought he would be, especially as a PR. He can be upgraded. Now if the Jets could trade down a few spots and take another WR prospect who would be the bpa at that spot and that WR isn't a slot WR, then fine, but otherwise, I think they take the bpa WR and don't worry about who they presently have. Kerley's good, but he isn't Wes Welker.
I totally agree, that's why I think Cooks, Beckham and Adams are the 3 WRs the team should ticket most. I love Evans and Matthews, and it would be great to finally have a great tall WR, but imo they aren't prototypical WCO WRs.
Right about Nelson, but I fully believe Kerley's presence on this roster should have an effect on the type of WR they target. I thought Kerley was really starting to turn the corner last year outside of freak injuries and some inconsistencies. He has shown the ability to be a quality possession, 3rd down receiver on the slots. Jets need to go for the receiver in the mold of prototypical X guy with size. Good thing this draft appears deep in that department. When its all said & done, I think the bpa WR on jets selections will be in that mold anyway. I generally hate the idea of looking for system-fit players. ballers are ballers. Looking for system-fit players is ultimately going against getting the bpa.
I haven't fallen out of love with him at all. If the Jets don't get a WR in round one, or even if they do and plan on taking 2, I'd love it if the Jets could grab him in the 2nd round, but I just don't see him being there at pick #49.
I understand what you're saying, and as I said I like Kerley, but I do think the Jets could get even better production out of his spot. I really hope it doesn't come down to that, as I don't think the Jets should actively be looking to replace him, but if that's their best choice, then they have to do it. A slot receiver who is faster than Kerley and could take it to the house or who is a better PR would serve this team a lot better than just Kerley. If they sign Sanders or even if they draft a slot receiver, they could have both in the slot on some plays. Either way, they have to upgrade the PR position. Maybe Kerley would stay healthier if he didn't have to return punts. If they got a guy like Jaylen Saunders, the Black Mamba (De'Anthony Thomas) or Dri Archer, those guys wouldn't get a lot of snaps anyway.
I would. The Jets cannot afford to trade up. Period. Trading up is for suckers who don't know how to handle the draft.
Like Tanny!! Tanny created our roster problems with lack of depth and glaring weaknesses at many positions. The depth at WR is incredible there is no need to trade up. With the signing of Worilds today, don't be surprised that we draft an OLB in one of the 1st 2 rounds. I expect the Jets to make a run at one of the FA WRs. I'd be happy with Avant and a few WRs from the draft.
Yep. I'm not a violent person by nature, but I swear on more than one occasion I wanted to drive to NJ and knock Tanny's block off. He killed this team. I'd be happy with Avant a 2-3 WRs from the draft too. I wouldn't at all be surprised if the Jets draft an OLB. In fact, if they don't, I'll be surprised and pissed. If they don't, and they had the opportunity, it will prove two things to me. One, Rex doesn't value the OLB position (and if so imo it's a fatal flaw in his coaching philosophy and understanding of the 3-4 alignment),and two, Rex has Idzik's ear and a major say so in personnel. If that is the case, I want them both gone. IMO Rex's D (or any NFL D) needs a real pass rushing threat to be truly and consistently effective. This is even more the case with the Jets' suspect secondary. Pace surprised me last year, but I don't think he can get 10 sacks again. Who knows if Barnes will be healthy or have the same speed, and even if he is/does, he's only a role player anyway, not a starter. I think Coples is totally miscast as an OLB, but can be somewhat successful IF the Jets have a fast, quality pass rusher on the opposite side. OLBs can take a year or two to develop so the Jets really need to draft 2 imo, one starter and depth, or a second starter if Coples doesn't work out an OLB.
The thing is, the Jets have a ton of holes. They need every pick they have and then some. Seattle has shown that with good drafting, excellent players can be found in the lower rounds, those draft picks that would be given away to get a WR. Then if that WR doesn't pan out or sustains a serious injury, it hurts even more. This team hasn't recovered from all the trading up that Tanny did. IMO it should be at least 5 years before the Jets even entertain the idea of trading up. The only exception to that would be if Geno clearly demonstrates that he isn't their QB of the future this season and the Jets don't draft a QB in this draft. In that scenario, I think the Jets should trade up next year if there is a great QB prospect. Otherwise, imo they need to stay put or maybe even trade down a time or two.
If we look at probably the best option for the Jets, after Watkins & Evans, based on productivity, explosiveness and best fit for the West Coast System.... the player is Brandin Cooks. I'm not comparing Cooks to Tavon Austin, because they're different players; Cooks is a much more polished receiver, but I believe Cooks is going to have a meteoric rise , just like Austin, and by out of reach at #18.
As of now the top 10 WRs and TEs i would want with our 1st rounder. 1.Watkins 2. Ebron 3. Evans 4. Benjamin 5. Cooks 6. Beckham Trade back 7. Adams 8. Matthews 9. Amaro 10. Robinson
I agree and wonder if Steve Smith is a better comparison? Cooks has it all. Speed, production, hands, quickness and he can play slot or out wide. He is a safe pick, but he brings a dimension to our offense that we are truly lacking. He is a playmaker. I hope he's still there.
If Evans makes it to 16 it would be insane to not trade up for him, maybe even 15. You don't pass up on a probable superstar for the price of less than a 3rd round pick. That could also set up something like ASJ then Sua Filo which could possibly fix the offense from day one. First Jordan Matthews is the guy at 18 now Cooks won't even be there at 18? Wow, you just don't quit. He may be more polished than Tavon but he doesn't have anywhere near the eyecatching explosiveness and probably more importantly last year's draft class was nothing compared to this year especially offensively. He's very good but we already have a slot receiver and he looks like just another receiver that isn't worth the 18th pick and won't make it to 50. The only way it makes sense is trading back the 1st round pick and tacking on the proceeds to trade up the 2nd round pick, netting 2 late 1st rounders.
If the Jets get Matthews, Cooks or Lee - I would be happy. I got a feeling Lee will be a Jet, his combine def lowered his stock. I think any of those 3 as long as they are healthy will be long-term contributors for the Jets. Only thing that scares me about Lee is his durability and he reminds me too much of Holmes, even though Holmes never had a collegiate season like Lee.
I never said Matthews will be the #18 pick, so get your facts straight. I said he had the potential to possibly move up to #18 and that was before the Combine. If you want the safest, most reliable and hardest working WR you draft Jordan Matthews. People were comparing Cooks to Austin, which is so wrong, which I believe we agree, but for different reasons. Cooks is so much more a polished receiver than Austin and it isn't even close. Austin isn't a true WR and isn't being used properly in the Rams' offense. Cooks uses he's speed and quickness in making plays as a tough physical receiver for his size, which is incredible. Austin has average hands and isn't nearly as physical a WR as Cooks. Austin may be slightly faster, but not to benefit him as a WR. To me Austin is a hybrid, a gadget player, part time receiver, and return man No question he's a freak athlete, he's just not a finished skilled WR, I'm glad the Jets didn't get the opportunity to draft him. You can bank on Cooks being a 1st Rd selection and probably a mid-Rd 1 prospect come May. Many are starting to project Cooks in the mid rd 1 area.
