I know, it sounds like a Tanny 2.0 type of move but hear me out.

I say we should target either the #4 (Browns) or #8 (Vikings) pick.

These would be the most reasonable picks to still be able to draft the player/s in-mind that will go this high. Of course the #4 pick would be more desirable. Depending on what these teams are asking is undoubtedly the main influence.

Though I feel with the #8 selection there would still be a good shot to be able to draft the future of the NYJ... Teddy Bridgewater.

There's a chance he could go #3 to the Jaguars (but analysts don't seem to think so), #4 to the Browns or at #5 to the Raiders. These picks would take more to obtain than the #8 selection. The picks between #5 and #8 are ATL and TB which I would feel comfortable neither would select him.

For him to make it through the Browns and the Raiders pick and make it to us at the hypothetical #8 position I would say is a 50% chance. 75% at #5 and 90% at #4. If it's a considerable difference between #4 and #8, such as an additional 4th round or better pick difference. I say move to the #8 spot no doubt.

    (Disclaimer)

    - What if Bridgewater is gone at #8?
Then we have a VERY good shot at getting Sammy Watkins. That's a win win in my mind at #8 if we were to obtain either player. While addressing a major concern at our most concerning positions.

    - Do I hate Geno? Why would I want to move so aggressively for a QB when we just drafted one last year?
In short I actually like Geno and saw flashes of a really good QB last year. The question is do we move forward on flashes with no one behind him just like we did with Sanchez?

    - Why Bridgewater, and what would his role be with Geno on the team?
I think Bridgewater could be the best QB to come out of the draft in the last decade. The only knock I have on him is his size which in fairness to him he got a lot bigger in last years off season in college. I'm sure he's going to put on some more mass this off-season as well. He's 21 years old and will fill out.

What would his role be, what about Geno. I say you draft him and let him sit and wait under Geno this year. Maybe Geno continues the roller coaster ride from last year and we have to plugin Bridge, maybe he excels and looks great. There again either way is win win. Look at the Redskins, do you think they're complaining about having Kirk Cousins and RGIII? No, it's a good problem to have and in today's QB driven NFL QB's are at an all time premium and if both succeed you have trade bait to the 1/3 of the NFL that has a QB concern.

Moving up makes little sense in a deep draft.

We are lucky so have as many picks as we do. The ONLY way i see us moving up is if in the 4th/5th round there is a kid we LOVE and we use a 6th/7th rounder to grab him ala Rams last year with Zac Stacy.

Idk what's gonna happen. I can see Idzik doing it, but I can also see him not doing it. I think we should move up to #4 to get Sammy Watkins. That kid is gonna be a complete stud in the NFL. We have so many picks that dependent on what we do in free agency, I can see us moving up to get a receiver like that

No. Listen, I love Teddy Bridgewater's game as much as anyone, am probably one of his biggest fans on this site, and would absolutely love it if he somehow fell to us, but I don't think he'll fall past Cleveland, much less to #8 or 18. There's no way would I expend all the picks the Jets would have to in order to move up that high. What's the point of getting the QB and having no one to block for him and no one to throw to? The Jets have way too many holes to even think about trading up. Minny is more desperate for a QB than we are. Why in the world would they trade out of that spot and not take Teddy?

We have a shallow roster. We need a good half dozen starters before we are competitive with the top teams on a regular basis. We probably need 4 more pro bowl caliber starters in the mix.

How would trading a bunch of picks to move up fix all of that?

We're in the mess we're in right now because the Jets didn't believe in their ability to find NFL quality players from the 5th round on. They gave away those picks like they were worth nothing. We're in the mess because when you draft just a few players year after year the toll on your roster begins to add up and eventually you fall short of a competitive roster. We're in the mess because sometimes when you trade up for a "sure thing" you get crapola instead.

Luckily for us we have a GM from an organization that is all about building around the draft with an occasional free agent supplement. He'll set things right if he has the time to do it. For the first time in 30 years the Jets will be a young up and coming team with pro bowl caliber players dotting the roster. We just need to avoid having Joe Klecko, Freeman McNeil, Al Toon and Ken O'Brien drop out with injuries on us through the run that's coming. If we can't do that we at least need to have enough good young players behind them that losing the big guys doesn't snuff the franchise like it did in the 80's.

I know your thought process behind what you're saying, and the logic is there.

I just believe that these days in the current NFL you have to build a roster starting with the QB. Very few teams have had success in the last 5 years or so using a mediocre QB or any QB outside of the top 10 best. Look at the teams that made the playoffs this year, only 2 teams have what I would call mediocre QB's in Andy Dalton and Alex Smith. Both of which teams are stacked, Kansas City had 10 pro bowlers this season, a top 3 defense, and one of the best ground games I've seen in years and they were still put out in the first round. Can a perennial playoff contending team be constructed with a plug and play QB, sure see Mark Sanchez. The problem is The Trent Dilfer's of the world (successful mediocre QB's) are few and far between and with the way the rules have been established a pass efficient team is typically just more effective and productive.

I guess what I'm trying to say can be summed up like this. 2008-2009 NY Jets were better than any other team in the league at the time, but due to the ineptitude at the QB position we could never make it over the hump and. On the flipside of that look at the 2008-2009 IND Colts roster, the whole time Peyton was a Colt he had one of the worst D's in the league and outside of James (who left 2005), Harrison and Wayne he never had anyone on offense. But even with such a horrible team a great QB put up 12+ wins a year every year.

A great QB can overcome a mediocre team, a great team rarely ever overcomes a mediocre QB (in todays NFL).

The Jets were never in the top 5 in terms of overall talent in 2008 and 2009. They were up there with the next group of teams but the Steelers and Ravens clearly outclassed the Jets on overall talent and the Packers, Patriots and Colts had better talent. The Packers had a crappy season in 2008 in terms of W-L but the pieces were much better than the record and that's why the DC got fired after the season.

Dallas Clark, Jeff Saturday, Anthony Gonzalez. Pierre Garcon couldn't crack the lineup on that team because it was so loaded at WR.

I'd move heaven and earth for Teddy even if it meant giving up the next 2 years because year 3-15 we'd be a perennial contender.

If Teddy is not there I'm not giving up anything for any of the WRs because there are a dozen if them to be had and it's clear that Clowney, the guy one poster here has a massive hard on for is looking like a supremely talented lazy dog.

no to moving up for a good not great prospect. the oppurtunity to move up should be coming back into the first or moving up in the 2nd for a dropping wr (cough mathews cough)
not selling out for a good not great qb prospect

I think it might well be a great move for the Jets to drop back to early to mid-20's if there's no blue-chip prospect still on the board at 18. Taking Brandin Cooks on the 26 with another 3rd round pick in hand would be a great way to resolve the question of whether to reach for a play maker in the 1st.

If the Browns take Manziel on the 4 they will be looking for tall receivers to complement him. Let them reach for a big guy on the 18 while the Jets take the better prospect on the 26.

I'm not a gambling man, but if I were, I'd bet my last dollar that Brandin Cooks won't be available at #26. We'll be lucky if he's sitting there at #18.

Brandon Cooks is rising faster than most realize. I agree he may not even be available at #18, that's why I drafted OBJ in my Jet's mock, I assumed Cooks was gone.

Right now, Cooks is my 3rd ranked WR.

The people comparing Cooks to Tavon Austin are way off base. Cooks is a significantly better, polished WR.

It's hard to see 4 WR's going by 18 without promoting a really good prospect down to the Jets. You cannot take Beckham over Lee. That's like the suicide move of all time. Lee had a crappy season for him last year and he caught two fewer balls than Beckham who had his best season. They're not even close as prospects. Not even in the same vicinity.

It could be possible 4 Wrs are drafted by #18.

I have Cooks ranked as my third WR prospect in this draft and he could be gone by #18.

The Jets may not even draft aWR at #18 depending who is available. You probably didn't see our 3 rd mock draft a few weeks ago. I was the Jet's GM and instead of reaching for a WR, I drafted the BPA...Taylor Lewan.

I like Lee, just not as high on him as some. I wouldn't be upset if we draft Lee, I think there will be a better option though.

Lewan would not be a bad pickup at all.

I understand the people who have some heebie-jeebies about Lee. He has some physical issues. He's not very big. He drops some balls. He is still the most likely guy in this class, including Watkins, to hit it really big in the NFL. He's got the production and the vibe and he plays well hurt. That's a dynamic combination for an NFL play maker. His floor isn't as high as Watkins but his ceiling is through the roof.
