Rex was right, but that isn't the only reason. He legitimately was the best cover corner in the league, but paying him that money coming off an injury like that is absurd. We all know that Revis' agent is really the one to blame. Man, if Revis and Holmes both landed on the Patriots this year and we lost our extra 3rd I would cry.
You know what? That article doesn't scare me in the least. Even if the Pats get him, it will hamper other moves they can make, and Revis isn't the player he was 3-4 years ago. As he ages, his play will continue to deteriorate. I'd actually love seeing the Jets stud WR (Cooks, Beckham or Matthews) destroy Revis in the head-to-head matchups the two teams have and see him catch the game-winning TD over Revis in the AFC Championship game in a year or two. Eff Revis.
I hate the Pats. You know they'll offer a first just to spite us. I can't wait til Belichick and Brady are gone. I will have a parade on that day, your all invited.
The important thing to remember about the Revis and the Jets situation is that it was a classic case of divided loyalties among the fans. As a fan you either root mostly for the players or you root for the laundry. Young fans tend to root for the players. Fantasy football fans definitely root for the players. The average fan roots for the laundry. You just want to see your team win a Super Bowl at some point. The way that Revis and his representation worked the problem of getting him every last penny was to play on the division of loyalty among the fans. They made Revis and Revis Island bigger than the Jets quest to get a Lombardi Trophy. The Jets helped them out in this regard by promoting Revis Island as heavily as they did and by the obvious affection that Rex showed for Revis on an ongoing basis. We've gotten past that point now as a franchise. Revis is gone and he isn't likely coming back. You don't have fans in TB up in arms because Revis is possibly leaving because all he represents there is a good player. All the promotion the Bucs did around him last year pretty much fell flat as soon as the team did. So they will easily cut and run with little fan backlash when they have to let him go. Wherever Revis lands he'll land as a good player, not some semi-mythical cash-eating god who is going to make everything right - even if his teams do tend to suck since he achieved cash-eating status. The days of divided loyalties are gone for most of us.
I don't think it's as binary as that -- I think most passionate fans root for BOTH the players and the laundry. Push comes to shove, it's the laundry, but it's the players that continue to reinforce the passion for the laundry. It's not one or the other. I began my lifelong love affair with the Jets because of Namath when I was 10 years old. Through the years it's been player after player after player that has fueled the fun for me, always hoping that one of those guys --the group of them-- was going to get us over the top. And even if those players go elsewhere I can't root against them as long as it doesn't impact the Jets in any negative way. I hated Revis the businessman but loved the player and always will. _
We should blame him because he did a good job. He didn't necessarily do anything wrong but it could still be his fault we don't have revis.
Yep. Revis probably told him to do what he does best and he laid back and watched $16M come in. You know the agent is happy considering he gets a certain percentage of that. Revis isn't just naming a random high price. His agent is factoring his maximum possible value based on the market, and he was right since the Bucs paid it.
Ben Volk @NFLBen 21m per Jason La Canfora, the Buccaneers may be willing to take a 3rd round pick for CB Darrelle Revis; maybe even a 4th rounder. LOL!!!!!! Give them their 3rd back,Restructure his deal and all is forgiven.
A 3rd round for Revis is a good deal for the Bucs at this point. They get the 4th to 3rd upgrade on their own pick as well and their cap becomes more normal moving forward. There's a reason only one team was bidding on Revis last year. His compensation demands are out of line with what the NFL is generally willing to pay any star player let alone a CB. By lowering the price on Revis the Bucs will open up a market to trade him that may eventually draw a few teams and even create a minor bidding war for him. That auction won't get a lot more than a 3rd but it might get them somewhat better value in return. The thing to remember is that on March 14th the pick the Bucs gave up last year is locked in place. The 13th is the last time a team can leverage last year's deal into a discount on what they might otherwise have to pay. If the Bucs don't get a real offer by the 13th there's a real chance they'll just cut Revis and move on. It's more likely he's back with them next year but nobody will be shocked if he's on the street looking for his best deal on the 14th.
The Bucs would be stupid as hell to trade Revis for a 3rd, after trading for him just a year prior giving up the #13 overall. I know its a new coach & gm, but seriously, he's the best pure cover guy in the league. Don't toss him, use him right. Build around him like Rex did.
I find it hard to believe a team will trade for Revis and pay him the $16 million salary for this season. And you know that Revis is not renegotiating. There is a better chance of him getting cut than traded.
They are not taking a third or fourth rounder for him. You would have to be fuckin nuts to take that. If that were true, Denver and New England wouldn't be trying to pry him away like the reports are saying. It would be a no brainer for them. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
Darrelle Revis at $8M on the cap for 3 years is maybe worth a 1st round pick to a contender. At $16M on the cap he's not. Imagine if you will (to borrow my favorite Rod Serling phrase) that the Pats decided Revis would put them over the top and decided to give up the 1st for him. Then Tom Brady declines for some mysterious reason at the age of 37 and the Pats sure thing goes by the boards. Where are the Pats next year? Trying to sell Revis to the highest bidder for whatever they can get as Revis passes 30. One of the things that is really clear to most teams is that very few veteran players in their late prime are worth a 1st round pick. Occasionally you see a team screw up and make a trade like that (Richard Seymour to the Raiders) but for the most part teams understand that trading for a good veteran player is mostly buying into his decline. Once in a blue moon you see a good QB get traded in his late prime for picks. Some times that deal is break even but mostly the team buying the QB's decline pays a heavy price. I'm going to be really surprised if anybody is willing to give up even a late 1st for Darrelle Revis on his current contract. There's just no upside there. If he plays like Revis Island you got what you paid for but no more. If he plays like a good CB but not Revis Island, man you just screwed up and you're going to have a miserable time getting out from under that. I'm pretty sure the Pats would rather have Aqib Talib playing CB for them at $7M next year than making a move for Revis. It's just not clear they can get Talib at his real value.
no way i trade for revis. 16M for him doesnt help the team. if he is cut and we can sign him at a lower number, id be all for that. either way we need CB help. we cant live with milliner starting. that guy is terrible
