I said they would restructure or cut and resign him. Holmes already said he would restructure, Sanchez would have to restructure also. Im not suggesting we are keeping these guys under the current contracts.
IMO the other thing to consider is that by rushing to release him, it shows either that a team has zero intention of keeping the player and is releasing him as early as possible so he can catch on with another team, or the team is releasing him as possible because they can't wait to get rid of him, which would be somewhat embarrassing for the player and would probably burn bridges. I want Holmes & Sanchez gone too, but as you and others have said, we may have to wind up keeping them if other things don't work out. Idzik is being cautious, careful and reasonable, and is acting like a grown up. Rex needs a "grown up" to keep him on the straight and narrow. I like it, and it's very welcome after that impetuous boob Tanny.
they'll likely be cut, but theres no reason NOT to do due diligence on options with them before the time comes to do so, including trying trade options. I wouldn't be surprised if they give the air of trying to keep Sanchez come before the 25th so they can draw up trading interest in a limited free agent QB market. also, i believe its better to cut them during the next league year which hasn't started yet. I could be wrong but I think they pay more by cutting them NOW than a couple weeks from now.
While you may think that I am not going to get into it since there are other threads devoted entirely to Sanchez. This was about cutting him and I am sure we would not be having this conversation if his contract was not so bloated for a QB of his caliber. His cap number is over $13,000,000 next year, way too much for the play he has shown.
Making roster moves before it's necessary would be like showing cards to your opponents in a poker game. We don't need to clear cap space to make any moves so why do so before we have to? When the bonus deadlines approach we'll probably make the obvious moves. Lot's of things can happen between now and then.
Some of you make me laugh. We've got a ridiculous amount of cap space, what's the benefit of running to cut Holmes or anyone else until we absolutely have too
if holmes is willing to restructure they might not cut him. the sanchez situation is odd. might be looking at keeping him around at a lower cost; his cap number this year is just ridiculous though and theres no way the team keeps him at that price
this might absolutely be true, but I think both sides would agree that Mark deserves a new start somewhere else.
Pretty simple - increased salary cap for a team already well under the cap allows playing with contracts. Hill is about to be officially tagged a bust so they might see Holmes as a 2/3 with Kerley while they draft a #1 in April. Looking at the old used up list available Sanchez might be the best option out there to compete for the job.
