Not sure if Revis coming back would be so beneficial to Milliner from a mentoring standpoint. Wilson spent a whole summer with Revis, and he still sucks..
Wilson isn't great but he doesn't suck. If the guy was a late round draft pick he would be a fan favorite. Throw away his draft status at this point and evaluate the player. Also him not panning out as a great CB isn't for a lack of Revis trying. Milliner is also the more physically impressive CB. If he learns the position he could be great.
Really? Cause I've never seen an NFL executive go on national TV & call out an individual player to take a deal or do anything for that matter. Revis going on ESPN solely to whine about his contract & to "call out" Woody was an insult to the franchise & the fans. Additionally, he never ONCE put the team first..repeatedly holding out, dragging the franchise through the media dirt.. Sorry. It's a cut throat business. Sometimes the negotiations are harsh. But they should be done behind the scenes & done in good faith. Revis did the opposite. He was selfish & made everything about him. If that doesn't bother you thats your choice. If you ask me he's a selfish, arrogant punk just like his beloved uncle.
The point is that the same guys that are calling him selfish. If he was a "team guy" and his play slipped you all would advocate cutting him because it benefits the team. The team gets to save money. These teams aren't loyal to those players, so why should Revis be loyal to the Jets? The teams treat it like a business then Revis has a right to get ALL his money.
you are trying to compare two entirely different dynamics that have zero to do with one another. even when a team cuts a player, they live up to the terms of the contract agreed to by the player and pay the player all guaranteed money. when a player holds out (you seem to want to ignore this fact and want to present the situation as if Revis' behavior did not violate the contract that he signed, which is the business argument you are making) he is not living up to the terms of his contract because he has taken guaranteed money that was agreed upon by both parties to be part of the total value of the deal over the total length of the contract and now demanded that it only apply to a portion of the contract, thus increasing the value of that guaranteed money. just because teams over look this to salvage the relationship because they want to keep a player doesn't change the fact that the behavior is completely different than a team cutting a player. player gets cut -- player still receives his guaranteed money meant to apply to x amount of years at a higher value because it now applies to a lower amount of x-1 or more years. player benefits, because guaranteed money is the only real contract value in the NFL. this is still the agreed to value between both parties. player holds out -- he still gets higher value by decreasing the amount of years the guaranteed money applies to, which was not agreed upon.
Being a player & being an NFL team are 2 very different entities. While he has a right to his money, he also has an obligation to his teammates & the fan base. If his holdout was a 1 time thing kept behind the scenes..I'd truly have no issue w/ him. But it's the constant discontent over his contract, his obvious lack of concern about his image or the fan base & his manipulation of the worst media beat in the NFL. There's a right way to go about negotiations & a wrong way. Revis & his agents just scream sleez
Revis outplayed his contract and according to Tanny they were gonna renegotiate the contract in year 3, that never happened. Teams either cut or renegotiate contracts when you don't live up to the contract based on performance. The NFL is cutthroat. So get your money while you can. Fuck the owners and the whiny fans.
again, you are confusing two separate issues. whether he is justified in doing so for his own benefit doesn't mean it is appropriate behavior. and it certainly doesn't make it comparable to a team cutting a player. and that is what you are attempting to claim.
I'm not justifying how he went about it. I'm just not mad at him for wanting his money and being cutthroat about it. Just like the Jets would be cutthroat to him if his play slipped.
I'm not saying he handled it the best way. But if a team can cut a guy after ripping his knee apart in preseason. Then Revis can holdout for money. It doesn't make the team more right in the situation.
Milliner showed more the last 4-5 games, than Wilson has his entire career. Wilson was actually pretty solid last year, though. Most of our issues were at safety and early in the year at CB when Cro was hurting and Milliner was just learning the basics of man coverage. Same shit, different sewer. I broke that argument down months ago and I ain't doing it again. It's flawed because if Revis holds out and a new contract is signed as a result, nothing was broken since the new contract was signed and is now legit. These guys are contractors, working for different companies. They do indeed get some say where they work and what their value is.
Its always interesting reading these various Revis postings. One set of arguments goes he should maximize his money, no matter the cost because the NFL teams don't care and would dump him at the drop of a hat and the second set of arguments goes that he owes it to his teammates and the fan base to not act that way. I think the biggest irony in the whole Revis saga is that if he'd just come across as a good guy and hadn't done the holdouts and created badwill with the fan base, he probably would have made significantly more money than the $16 million/year he wanted. Let's say that the jets give him a long-term deal (6+ years) with annual money in the $12 million range (which I think they were pretty clearly willing to do). If he had the good guy reputation, how much more would he have made with his endorsements? Probably easily more than $4 million/year because the Jets are in the biggest media market in the US. Moreover, he would have been the face of the franchise and the Jets would not have been willing to treat him badly. I think his own actions really hurt him. He may have gotten his $16 million last year and he may get it next year, although if I were Tampa Bay I would cut him or trade him, there's no way that a team with TB's holes should pay over 12% of its total salary cap to a CB. I don't think he get the $16 million/year in future years (he'll be a 30 year old CB). Given the contract, I think TB will have a very difficult time finding a suitor for a Revis trade at all much less one willing to provide a high level draft pick.
In my opinion he has tainted his legacy. No doubt he'll go down as one of the best ever at his position. But It'll be impossible to forget the holdouts, public whining & statements like "16 is better".
He does not care about his legacy or winning. Only how much he is making this year, nothing else. And he's a disruptive person in the locker room. I hope he never makes the playoffs and someday he sees Woody raising the Trophy. F REVIS
It's amazing how you all turn on a player. It may seem biased coming from me since I have Revis in my name. The only reason he asked for all the money is because Rex was hyping him up every week. Saying he's the best corner, he deserves to be the highest paid. I believe Rex even came up with Revis Island.
This and this guy never went out of his way to make the team better. Compare him to say Ray Lewis, who went above and beyond his contract to pull the team together, motivate, etc. Revis did his job as a cornorback but never seemed to do more than that. He might have played on the Jets, but he wasnt a "Jet".
Darrelle Revis is getting what's important to him, which is his money. I don't see why we can't just accept that and move on.
You're right. But we're a passionate fan base that hasn't had alot of truly great players to rally around. Revis was a home grown Jet who was arguably the best player in the league. Not only did he leave for reasons other than football...he used the scummy NY media to try & drag the franchise through the mud. I'm not sure the fan base will ever forgive him
This is one of the scariest articles I have seen in a long time. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...uld-be-trying-to-shake-revis-free-from-tampa/
