People whose stock skyrocketed at the Combine are a trap. They didn't do anything at the Combine that means anything about their ability to play WR in the NFL. People who fell are a different story, although again a week worth of workouts doesn't tell you as much about a player as the years he spent playing football in college. If you have a critical deficit it's a different story.
If you want physical that can win deep how do u not like Benjamin? That dude destroys CBs in single man press coverage. Fact.
Another fact is that Benjamin was inconsistent in college. I think he's talented as hell, but I do not believe he will be productive out of the gate. We need that.
I wouldn't hold much value to the combine. As a sports analyst put it earlier, "this is like taking the SAT. If you perform poorly, there will always be a second chance". In this case, the pro day. The combine is nice to see how fast and quick these guys are but I am more concerned with their play in a live action offense. Not a "ready set go" sprint. Agree here. Being a student at Florida State, I became very familiar with watching him. Very very talented. Big kid with huge upside. But, like you said, is going to need some TLC to really bring out his potential. This is part of the reason why I think we will look elsewhere. We all know how it panned out last time we drafted a guy with "potential" rather than immediate talent.
WR is not a position to target early in the draft if early production is that pressing of a need. As I said in another thread..Wrs need time to adjust to the NFL.Route running is a whole different ball game in the NFL. No matter what WR we take early..they aren't gonna come in & catch 60 balls in year 1.That just isn't gonna happen. You can badly stun a WRs development if you throw them into the fire too early.Especially in New York. That isn't to say that the guy we draft has to be a bench warmer for 2 years.Let them have their packages & use them situationally. If they step up early..so be it. But more likely it is gonna take alittle while. I just think we should pick the right WR for the right reasons. Not sacrifice pick value for the short term. As for Benjamin, I actually was impressed by his combine. He has much better feet, body control & hands then i thought he did. What's the case for taking him over the others? Plaxico Burress- Pittsburgh/Giants Alshon Jeffery- Chicago Anquan Boldin-Baltimore AJ Green-Cincy I believe there is something to be said for having a big physically imposing WR in a cold weather setting like NY. When December roles around with the swirling winds..a speed guy does no good on a fly route cause the ball sails on anything beyond 20 yards. If you have that big WR, he can fight through tight space & move the chains.
Implying he produces - he's not inconsistent, that is the mental aspect of the game, the most important aspect for a football player. Why can't Matthews play in the cold weather and make plays? He has the better hands and doesn't mind going over the middle. AND he's got PROVEN to work at his craft and gives it all. There are reports about Benjamin's immaturity. The kid will need good coaching. Matthews compared to a lot of prospects appears to be the guy that wants to master his craft. He's got the resources off the field in Jerry Rice. He's proven to be consistent and reliable.
btw I'm not saying Benjamin sucks and I don't want him. I believe in football IQ, initial skill-sets coming into the league and upside. To me Matthews is the answer in that aspect.
I like Matthews. My point is not to downplay him.Its not really about any prospect specifically.I just dont want thr jets to pick a certain wr solely based on their early returns. I think Matthews, Benjamin, Beckham, Cooks & Lee are all very similar levels of talent. They all bring diffrrent things to the table.I was merely presenting the argument for Benjamin.
While NFL routes are different and it does take many WRs a year or so to adjust, that just isn't true with all of them. Keenan Allen had 71 receptions this season. You just can't definitively say that it isn't going to happen that a rookie WR will catch 60 passes for the Jets.
Here are my Day 4 takeaways: http://www.cornerblitz.com/2014/Combine/DB.aspx I think the guy from Rice did more to help himself than anyone else. He looked like a natural out there.
Sure its possible..but it shouldn't be expected. And you dont draft a player bc of their potential rookie year production.
holee smokes jeti....if CB is the round 1 choice, idzik and ryan should be castrated on the spot. i can c linebacker if its a BPA issue but CB. no way.
No, not solely, but I believe that has to be taken into consideration. When you have a crying need at WR and there aren't any topflight WRs available in FA, then that has to temper your thinking and evaluation process, however. I think Benjamin is definitely going to need at least a year, if not two to develop, if then. It all depends upon his maturity, his willingness to work hard, and the situation he goes into. IMO, he's just too "iffy" for the Jets. Lal has not shown the ability to really develop a WR. NYC will offer a lot of distractions for a young, immature kid. Rex isn't a big disciplinarian. All those spell possible trouble for me with Benjamin. If all the other top WR prospects have gone by pick #49, the Jets don't have a WR, and he's there, I'd take him if there wasn't a prospect at another position that I thought was head and shoulders above Benjamin; otherwise, I'd pass on him. Just as you can't or shouldn't take a WR based solely on his production in his rookie season, I don't think you can or should take a WR that you know is going to be a project unless you have great WRs and excellent depth already. In that situation, it's a luxury. I think there are a number of WRs who, while they may take some time to fully develop and their ceilings may not be as high as Benjamin, their chances of developing are much better, and their chances of making a significant contribution during their rookie season are much better. I think Mathews could probably start day 1 and make an excellent contribution during his rookie season. The same goes for Cooks and Beckham. Watkins has a ton of talent, but doesn't sound like the sharpest pencil in the box, so he may struggle a little initially, as Evans may, but I think both will make big contributions during their rookie seasons and going forward. I would have said the same about Landry, but after the Combine, I'm much less sure about him.
I agree - but the thing is I am looking at the Jets history in regards to developing raw talent. It's no good right now
Does anyone know why Ed Reynolds and Deone Bucannon weren't at the Combine? Were they not invited? Are they injured? I don't see any results listed for them.

Thanks. They weren't on the alphabetical list of players on the DB page. I also discovered some others last night. Did you search for them? How did you find them?
