He didn't have a career. From 2006 until 2012 he played in only 13 games. 9 were with the Raiders in 2006 when they were a dreadful team. Maybe he learned a lot from all that sitting and studying. You can't ignore a 109 rating from last year as easily as you are trying to. 13 TD's to 1 INT is impressive no matter how you slice it. I personally don't think he's that good but neither of us know for sure and we can only base it off the numbers. But to say he would immediately be the backup to GENO SMITH (as some are saying) is absurd.
You have to bring in the vet and let Geno beat him out. If he does, then your right, the season is on him. But having another guy on the roster who can win games or step in if Geno under performs, is smart. It's not impossible to have a guy lose a position battle, come in later in the season, and play well. Simms isn't the answer. A middle round QB probably isn't either. Could be, but highly unlikely. The NFL is a win now league, if you can find a guy who can win you games, his age or status as a "journeyman", or "vet" doesn't matter.
He was throwing to two receivers that are easily top 10 in this league. Brandon Marshall is a complete stud and Alshon Jeffrey has turned into a top receiver. Watch his film. Many of his TDs were because of these two, not necessarily his throws
Looks like he will be signing elsewhere. Thank God! - Brian Costello I'm not sure if Jets are targeting QB Josh McCown or not but I hear he's more likely to sign with the Bears or Bucs anyway. #nyj
McCown hasn't played a lot over the years, so even though he's 34, his body hasn't taken a lot of abuse/pounding. I can understand why some wouldn't want him, not only because of his age, his lack of playing experience (except for last year), and his career stats aren't impressive. Still, you don't put up the numbers he did last year if you aren't doing something right. As I see it, whatever vet QB the Jets would bring in this year is probably only going to be with the team for a year or two anyway. If Geno develops and plays well, he will be the starter going forward. If he doesn't, the Jets will draft another QB and perhaps let Geno compete for the job or be the backup. They may even draft another QB this year in the draft. I hope they do, but even if they do and Geno were to struggle, more than likely, they wouldn't turn to that rookie, but would instead turn to the backup to try to save the season. If they didn't, lots of fans would scream, and it might appear that they were intentionally tanking. I'd rather the Jets turn to the rookie only IF they think he's ready to play. I wouldn't want him to play if he had the same kinds of technique issues to work on like Geno did and get thrown to the wolves like Geno. The thing is with McCown is that he's been around. He's played for 5 different teams. That's at least 5 OCs and 5 QB coaches, maybe more. I think he could be a very good mentor for Geno and a rookie, and give them some quality spot starts if need be.
He is Matt Flynn,He was trash for his entire carrer until he had the best wrs in the league and a great offensive coach and a revamped o line and Matt Forte,We have none of that at the moment I'll pass
For a back up 34 isn't bad,we aren't looking at him to be a starter.People act like 30 is the new 80 in the nfl
Every time I think of McOwned I think about the times when he faced good defenses and got owned. He'd be a decent backup I guess.
If Geno fails that means the season is most likely already in the tank and this vet would have to come in and practically run the table to make it to post season. Not very likely. So with the season in the tank I'd rather test our inexperienced #2 QB to see what we have in him. I guess I'm in the "keep drafting one till you find one" camp so I want to fast track our draftees. I think a good to great QB is like pornography, you know it when you see it. You can't see it if he's on the bench.
Here's the list of free agent QB's. Brady Quinn Chad Henne Charlie Whitehurst Colt McCoy Curtis Painter Dan Orlovsky David Garrard Derek Anderson Jimmy Clausen Joe Webb Jon Kitna Jordan Palmer Josh Freeman Josh McCown Kellen Clemens Luke McCown Matt Flynn Michael Vick Rex Grossman Rusty Smith Seneca Wallace Shaun Hill Tarvaris Jackson
that is what a back-up QB is - no-one is expecting him to come in and start after the way Smith closed out the season.
I would love to have him on our team. Did well in Cutler's absence and can serve as a mentor. Can also step in in case of injury.
But lets see Geno win the job first before we talk about him failing. They could bring in somebody like McCown, he could beat out Geno, and then the season is on his shoulders. We also don't know how anything will play out. Geno can win the job in a close competition with someone, play horrible the first 3 games, but maybe the Jets steal a win and we could be switching to a backup at 1-2. A switch doesn't necessarily have to happen with the season basically over. If the Jets thought they had much with a guy like Simms we most likely would have seen him play a decent portion of last season while Geno was struggling, and or they wouldn't be so interested in the QB position this off season. They're hoping Simms can grow into a decent backup. At least that's my opinion on the situation. I'm in the "keep drafting one until you find one camp as well". In a perfect world I want this team to get Maziel, but it's not going to happen. If they go QB early in the draft this year, i'd be happy. I just want a vet on this team in case neither Geno or whoever else they draft is ready.
