Just because Tanny was an utter joke as a GM doesn't mean that 2nd round picks aren't VERY valuable. The book isn't closed on Geno yet by any means. Even if he doesn't develop into a quality starter, it was a great effort to find a starting QB. Geno was the highest-rated QB in last year's draft, had been very accurate in college, and dropped to the second round. You're wrong in saying that 2nd round picks are overvalued, flat out wrong.
1. Tannenbaum's stupidity shouldn't mean 2nd rounder is nothing. It is not overvalued. You MUST get a day 1 contributor out of the first three picks. If you haven't been doing that, either the entire scouting department has to go, or the GM has to go, or both. 2. Jets have been absolutely horrible with 2nd round picks - but the likes of Gronk were also drafted in 2nd round. 2nd round pick IS actually like a bar of gold. Really. 3. As for Cousins - Sanchez straight up. Or else.
If you're talking about a deal with Wash. for Cousins there's no way Mark would be included. If Wash is interested in Mark they'll wait for him to be cut by the Jets. A Jets for Cousins deal would be more logical if it included Geno. Geno and a pick for Cousins. That is if the Jets think Cousins is a better option at Qb.
Trading Sanchez for Cousins would probably never happen, but trading Geno and a pick for Cousins would make zero sense whatsoever. That would leave them with no QB who has any experience in their offense (aside from Simms). It would be giving up on Geno after one season, which would be so effing stupid it would make Idzik worthy of being fired immediately and not even allowing him to handle the draft.
This thread reminds me how Jet fans at TGG were begging for Matt Schaub from Atlanta 7 years. Texans gave up 2 second rd picks 2007 & 2008 for Schaub.
I'd take Cousins over Geno and be willing to throw in a 3rd rounder plus Geno for him. It's not going to happen because Wash is not going to do it.
Can someone tell me what has Kirk Cousins done to merit all this love? Don't get me wrong, I'm a MS fan and I watched him play some good football. But at this point in his career he has not showed a lot, his stock is going up because he played a couple of good fill in games. Matt Flynn did the same thing and he ended up not being so good. I hope the jets pick up some WR talent and another QB in this draft ( mettenberger ) if I had to pick, or just use the picks to build a deep and young team.
Jets are more likely to pick up a QB in the late rounds so they have him on the roster basically for free for 4 years. As far as Cousins I hope they DO get a 2nd round pick for him.....maybe that will embolden Idzik to try and get the same for Nacho
That's a pretty bold statement that 2nd rounders are overvalued. Hill and Vlad didn't work out because they were both projects, bad picks. Don't blame the 2nd round, blame Tanny. Rex wanted no part of the Hill selection, he was overruled. David Harris was a darn good second rd pick.
All draft picks are overrated. Look at all the high first round busts. As for Cousins I'm not completely sold on him. He didn't look that good starting those last 3 games last season. Geno was better than him for that span. But if you ask me whose better overall I have to say Cousins. And it could be that Geno will end up much better. But if offered in a deal (I know it's not going to happen) I'd take Cousins for Geno and even throw in a pick. Wash just might trade him. They are looking probably for a 1st rounder. They might not think it's worth trading him for a 2nd or a 3rd because they might need Cousins in case RG3 is injured or ineffective. No way you can include Mark in any deal with his salary etc. Plus they already have a former bad starter in Rex Grossman whose right there in the same league as Mark.
They don't have to, Another crazy statement. Let's just shut down the Combine, close the draft process and have an open market.
Right. Last time I saw a GM trading picks away for players - he ran the team into the ground. Very insightful.
Dudes, I wasn't looking to rain on your parade. I love the draft, too. But how many top picks were busts. And how many lower round guys and UFAs were great. Overall high picks have a better success rate than guys rated lower. But there are so many exceptions that your zeal to overrate draft picks is incomprehensible. As for the combine remember Vern Gholston. And there are many many many others. You need picks but they're not the end all be all. If it was then what about free agency. Would you trade some of those precious picks for Matt Ryan.
So I told you. The last GM who traded the picks away to get the 'proven' guys did what to this franchise?
