Fair enough. Bortles could develop, but I think he's a QB that needs to sit for at least a year, maybe 2 behind a quality starter from which he can learn. I think he also needs to be in the right system and maybe a team where there wouldn't be a ton of pressure like with the Jets. Perryman shouldn't even be in this draft. He's staying at Miami. http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/01/11/3862897/miami-hurricanes-linebacker-denzel.html
1. I was thinking exactly that; he's a 2nd round prospect in my eyes for exactly that reason. He's not ready for the prime time in his rookie year. If I am the GM and I draft Bortles, then I am restructuring Sanchez as well. It will be Geno-Sanchez competition for the first few years - if Geno still fails to develop into anything useful, he's out in 2 years. It will be competition between Bortles and whoever is left behind - if Bortles is as good as I think he can be, then he should win the competition by year 3. All in all, if I do draft Bortles, he will not even sniff the field for the first two years. [And I do think Sanchez is a superior QB to Geno - maybe Geno is on par, but that's not a compliment to Geno. What I mean is, Bortles can learn what a QB must NOT do as a QB while observing Sanchez's play, like Montana did while observing DeBerg.] 2. And the two-year window is exactly what I would need to a. replenish the roster talent level [especially at OL/OLB/S] and b. get the players acclimated to the system. Upside of having Sanchez playing is that, Jets have a chance to go 6-10 with that retard - which presents a chance to a) trade down or b) get a good pick. It may suck for the first two years, but it will be all over after that span too. 3. Or - by stroke of luck, either one [Sanchez or Geno or both] could develop into something useful - then Jets can a. stay with whoever came into full blossom or b. trade him away, knowing Jets won't be winning much with him either way. A happy problem to have. If they don't, they still have Bortles waiting in the wings. 4. I was suspicious of Perryman pick myself - I remember reading about him staying in school. I just went with that pick because I wanted another OLB.
I can't see the link so I used a draft simulator on fanspeak.com 18: Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE 49: Allen Robinson WR 69: Deone Bucannon SS 80: Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB 111: James Hurst 142: James Gayle DE/OLB 179: Kirby Van Der Kamp P 210: Kevin Norwood WR (need to draft this kid just look at the highlights) Offseason Possibilities : - Sign O'Brien Schofield (love his ability to rip the ball out) - Sign Thurmond on the cheap - Sign McCown or Vick (I would sign the cheaper option due to both being beneficial in different ways) - Sign Marcus Williams or Ciante Evans and Connor Shaw (went undrafted) - Sign Tate (Could use a returner to pair with Cribbs) - Sign Michael Hoomanawanui (great blocking tight end) - Trade Wilson preferably for picks - Cut Holmes - Cut Sanchez - Cut Cromartie then hopefully resign - Extend Wilkerson - Sign either Schwartz or Asamoah if they're not confident in Winters - Re-sign Howard, Pace, Folk, and Cumberland (for right price) - Move Ferguson back to LG Partial Roster Heading into Camp QB: Smith, McCown/Vick, Shaw/Simms FB: Buhanon RB: Powell, Ivory, Green, Goodson LT: Hurst LG: Ferguson, Ducasse C: Mangold RG: Asamoah/ Schwartz, Winters RT: Howard TE: ASJ, Cumberland/Hoomanawanui, Sudfeld/Hoomanawanui WR: Robinson, Nelson/Norwood, Kerley, Tate, Cribbs LDE: Wilkerson DT: Ellis, Harrison RDE: Richardson, Gayle LOLB: Coples, Pace ILB: Davis, Harris, Bellore/Costanzo CB: Cromartie, Milliner, Thurmond, Baptiste, Williams/Evans SS: Bucannon, Landry FS: Allen, Jarrett, FA K: Folk P: Kirby Van Der Kamp Honestly I have no idea how Bucannon and SJB fell to the third but I'll take it for what it was because A) there we're a good amount of reaches B) It's beneficial to the Jets
I understand your reasoning. I just don't like Sanchez, and I think the fanbase would mutiny. I think the team would be better off getting rid of Sanchez to get more cap room, and if Geno is as bad as Sanchez in your eyes, you might as well play Geno. At least that way, you could say you're giving the young QB a chance, and most of the Jets fans would not only understand but go along with it and support it. The other thing is that while sitting Bortles for a couple of years sounds good, the pressure of playing in NYC/NJ could be too great for him even when he's ready to start. The other thing that could foil your plan is what if Bortles either really sucks in practice or lights it up? If he sucks for two years in practice, you still don't have a QB if Geno hasn't developed and improved, and if he surprises and starts lighting it up towards the end of his first season, you still have Sanchez under contract eating up cap space.
Which is specifically why it is Sanchez/Geno competition in year 1 and 2. If Sanchez fails to impress the coaching staff this summer, he's gone. Of course he WILL have to take a massive paycut to even be there. If he's not willing to do that, then he's gone in as early as this coming March. Nothing too complicated. I do not think so. He will be shielded and protected in the first year to say the very least. And if he really sucks, like Sanchez-level sucks, then Jets are back to square one - draft a QB. And Sanchez shouldn't even have to enter the consideration here because the premise of Sanchez entering the argument is that he takes a massive paycut. If he doesn't, then he's shitcanned, and year 1 starter is Geno from the get-go. Another thing I forgot to mention was that, Sanchez is in NY for 2 years at most. When Bortles is ready in year 3, either Sanchez or Geno will be the backup, but not both will be back. If Bortles lights up in the practice, he will STILL not sniff the field in the first year anyway. This offensive crew is just not complete. If I know my QB prospect is the real deal - and he keeps showing he's the real deal throughout practices, I am not risking my investment when the protection is shoddy at best and supporting cast is suspect. I will try to get him on the field in year 2 instead of year 3 - which can happen. But, again, as I emphasize, he will not even sniff the field in his rookie season under any circumstance. P.S. On a second thought, maybe to give him some experience in a game where Jets are up by 3-4 possessions. [Which is not likely to happen, but then you never know.] I might put him in during 4th quarter. [Again, wisdom from Walsh.]
In the following draft, I didn't care what grade the site gave me, I just tried to combine value and need and get players that I thought could really help the team. I like this draft as much as any I've had or seen in this thread. Your Picks: Round 1 Pick 26 (CLE): Dee Ford, DE, Auburn (A-) Round 2 Pick 1 (HOU): Odell Beckham, WR, LSU (A-) Round 2 Pick 3 (CLE): Kyle Van Noy, OLB, Brigham Young (B) Round 3 Pick 16: Terrence Brooks, FS, Florida State (B) Round 4 Pick 1 (HOU): Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU (B-) Round 4 Pick 15: Anthony Steen, OG, Alabama (B+) Round 5 Pick 14: Marcel Jensen, TE, Fresno State (B) Round 6 Pick 19: Isaiah Lewis, SS, Michigan State (A) Round 7 Pick 18: De'Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon (B-) In Ford and Van Noy, the Jets would have two excellent OLB prospects, one who is very fast, great at snap anticipation and pressuring the QB, and the other who is equally adept at dropping into coverage, playing the run and rushing the passer. They would have a speedy, field stretching WR and KR. They would add a quicker FS prospect for Reed to mentor. They'd have a more solid OG prospect who has played on championship teams. They'd have a 2-way TE with more prototypical size and who should be a great red zone target. They'd have another young SS to help strengthen the depth in the secondary, and a great 3rd down back and PR. Add in the comp picks, and the Jets could perhaps grab an ILB, CB and another WR. Team speed would have been greatly enhanced. They'd also have a solid backup QB prospect who could develop into a quality starter that they could use to replace Geno if he doesn't develop or trade for multiple picks in a couple of years.
18 WR MIKE EVANS TEXAS A&M 49 WR JORDAN MATTHEWS VANDERBILT 69 G ANTHONY STEEN ALABAMA 80 S ED REYNOLDS STANFORD 111 QB JIMMY GAROPPOLO EASTERN ILLINOIS 142 OLB ADRIAN HUBBARD ALABAMA 179 RB STORM JOHNSON UCF 210 TE JAKE MURPHY UTAH My first attempt. I'm surprised Kelvin Benjamin is going as the #2 WR off the board now. Can't wait for the combine results to be factored in.
Your score is: 3340 (Drafting Ability: C, Player Quality A, Future Draft Picks: N/A) Your Picks: Round 1 Pick 19 (MIA): Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina (A) Round 2 Pick 26 (N.O.): Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU (A) Round 3 Pick 5: Anthony Steen, OG, Alabama (C) Round 3 Pick 16: Adrian Hubbard, OLB, Alabama (C) Round 3 Pick 17 (MIA): Tre Mason, RB, Auburn (A) Round 3 Pick 22 (PHI): Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss (B-) Round 3 Pick 27 (N.O.): Dion Bailey, FS, Southern California (B) Round 4 Pick 15: Michael Sam, DE, Missouri (B+) Round 5 Pick 14: Justin Britt, OT, Missouri (E) Round 6 Pick 19: Isaiah Lewis, SS, Michigan State (A) Round 7 Pick 18: Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma (C+) haven't run the simulator in a while and came across some surprises. Steen and Hubbard both getting C grades is surprising considering they were both getting A grades about a week ago. Bailey a B at the end of the third. Sam getting a B+ in the fourth, my guess because of his coming out. Britt used to also get a higher grade in the 5th and Colvin in the 7th was too good to pass up, ACL tear or not.
They re-graded the entire database of prospects as of late. I barely broke 4000 this time around - and some of the picks that they once liked are not regarded as highly as before.

My next draft had 1 - Greg Robinson 2 - Austin Seferian-Jenkins 3 - Jarvis Landry 4 - Stanley Jean-Baptiste 5 - Ed Stinson 6 - Tre Boston and the server froze from too many connections While this one wouldn't have had the offensive help of the others, Robinson would have been a HUGE steal at #18, and the 1st 4 picks alone would have made this draft worth it. We'd have had a new starting RT this season, and Brick's eventual replacement in Robinson; a new starting TE; a new #2 WR who would have probably contributed from day 1, and Cro's replacement (if not this year in a year or two) in Jean-Baptiste. The DE would have shored up depth and Boston would have added more competition at S. I'd love any of these 3 drafts.

Round 1 Pick 18: Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA (A) Round 2 Pick 17: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State (B) Round 3 Pick 5: Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB, Georgia Tech (B) Round 3 Pick 17 (MIA): Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska (A-) Round 4 Pick 15: C.J. My favorite yet. It addresses all our needs except OG. I could have taken Gabe Jackson over Cooks in the 2nd round, but don't think the Jets will use a pick that high on an OG since they have Campbell and Aboushi, and just used a 3rd on Winters last year. Just as importantly, Cooks would be a great fit in the Jets' WCO, and the WRs were disappearing quickly. It also adds an excellent QB prospect in Mettenberger at the end of the 4th round. If Geno doesn't develop, there's a chance that Mettenberger can. Round 1 Pick 28 (CAR): Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington (B) Round 2 Pick 17: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State (A) Round 2 Pick 28 (CAR): Jimmie Ward, SS, Northern Illinois (A) Round 3 Pick 7 (CLE): Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU (A) Round 3 Pick 16: Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB, Georgia Tech (A) Round 3 Pick 28 (CAR): Dion Bailey, FS, Southern California (B) Round 4 Pick 15: Charles Sims, RB, West Virginia (B+) Round 4 Pick 27 (CLE): Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU (A) Round 5 Pick 14: Chris Davis, CB, Auburn (A) Round 6 Pick 19: Ed Stinson, DE, Alabama (A-) Round 7 Pick 18: Richard Rodgers, TE, California (B-)

I've given up on the grading from that site. They obviously have a very different grading system on the players than I do. I'd really like that draft, with the possible exception of Richardson. He's very fast, but very small, and I'm not sure he will last in the NFL. I don't know if he returns kicks or punts, but that may be all he can do, and if so, that's too high to take a PR/KR imo.
Grading is a joke and shouldn't even be considered. I still question a lot of rankings on that site, Jimmy Garoppolo shouldn't be available in rd 3/4. Jeremiah Attaochu has hammy issues and it could effect his stock, not running at the Combine
It was either Jordan Matthews or Jeremiah Attaochu. I went with OLB, seeing it will take more than 2 years to fix the offense anyway. From the way I see it, if Jets draft KVN and Attaochu, then Coples can go back to his 3-4 DE role, where he was a terror. Also I liked the both safety pickup at the start of 4th round - if the picks pan out [let's hope Jets LB coaches and DB coaches can do their part] the entire defense is set for years. Anthony Steen and Charles Leno were both surprise find at that round - and I felt like I was reaching a bit, but I didn't want to pass up than regret. The difference in value is so miniscule at that round anyway. OLBs go out faster than hot buns fresh out of the oven in any given draft - as long as he is good. No reason to risk losing a good prospect - or that was my reasoning. I knew I wasn't getting him a few picks later, let alone in the next round.
