I just wanted to gauge the thoughts of some of the more experienced draftniks here on trading future pics. With Mayock calling this the "the deepest and best draft class I’ve seen in probably ten years," and us having significant cap space to fill dire needs (ie. a Maclin-caliber receiver, a competent safety, and even a homerun-hitting pass rusher ala Orakpo - all while having $8-15 million left over), I'm wondering if Idzik and co. can't almost afford to look at this as a two-year exercise. We may end up with 12 picks this year, minimum 10, so there is already potential to package picks and move up a bit, but is it also worth it to consider using 2015 picks? I'm not talking about trying to grab Watkins at #5, I'm just making the argument that #36 and #51 this year might be worth more, long term and given the judged quality of this overall draft , to us than #54 and #86 next year. I am completely against trading next year's first rounder - even if Clowney falls to 10 - because anything can happen. We could go 2-14, Rex gets fired, we have a whole new philosophy...not likely, but could happen, and if it does you need a first round pick. But would you rather be down a second and third rounder next year for a shot at 4-6 long-term quality starters? Or keep a full boat for 2015, and get 2-4 out of this draft?
I don't put too much stock in the "deepest draft in 10 years" thing. Every single year from January until May we hear how deep the draft is. I cant remember ever reading an article about how little depth there is in a certain draft. I'm against trading up in general, so I don't think I would want to trade future picks. Finding late round gems is so huge in the NFL right now. It's what's allowing Seattle to contend for championships for probably 4 years. I suppose if the value was too much too pass up, I could probably be convinced. In general, I think I'd stay away from trading up.
Why would you trade future picks in a draft where you already have 10+? That's like insanity. Let's not just trade up let's really mortgage the future to do it because it's been so good to us in the past.
Since this year's draft is so deep, maybe you can give us some of your next year's 1st and 2nds for this year's. We will trade. We will let you trade up. Fair deal? I mean, I also hear that next year's crop isn't anything half as good as this year's. So - you don't lose much by giving us your next year's pick anyway. You will love the guy you pick with that trade up too! I guarantee it.
I have always been against giving up future draft picks. There really isn't a player I feel the Jets "must have" to give up the future. There seems to be more talk in this forum this year, compared to the past, about trading picks. I think we need to temper our trading thoughts, Tanny is long gone and Idzik is going to be more cautious. If anything, I think Idzik would try to acquire some picks for 2015. While this draft is deep at certain positions, especially WR & DL, I don't consider it a extremely strong draft class, it's good not great.
