It seems like everyone and their grandma think that the Jets are going to get Eric Ebron at 18th overall, but let's be honest here, that most likely won't happen. The kid is a freak athlete and he might have a Tavon Austin like rise once the combine is over and everyone sees how he runs. He'll almost definitely go in the top 15 and potentially the top 10, just like Vernon Davis. At 18 I also expect Mike Evans, Sammy Watkins, and potentially Marqise Lee to be off the board. At 18 is it too early for Odell Beckham Jr, Jace Amaro, Kelvin Benjamin, and Allen Robinson? I personally think so. With that being said, it's probably in our best interest to TRADE DOWN. This draft class is one of the deepest I've ever seen. I'm not sure how the points work, but if we traded down from let's say 18 to 26, what would we get? 26 is right around where Jace Amaro and Odell Beckham should be selected and than in the 2nd round you can follow up with some really great players with Austin Seferian Jenkins, Jarvis Landry, Tre Mason, Xavier Su'a-Filo, etc. Would anyone be alright with this scenario? I think it could go an extremely long way to rebuilding this roster
When I looked a couple weeks ago at the draft value chart, I believe we would get an additional second by trading from 18 to 30. So from 18 to 26, maybe we trade a 4th and they trade a 2nd or something like that. Depending on the board I would definitely be interested in a trade down. Picking up an additional second or third would be huge for adding talent. 3 picks in the first 64 allows us address three positions with top flight talent. Obviously there is no way of knowing who would be available, but ending the second round with 3 of WR/TE/S/OLB addressed would really open up which positions to go after in the third.
If all of the top WR prospects are gone the Jets may wind up taking an OT at 18. It really depends on who is there. I'd have no problem with trading down and getting more quality picks however the Jets really do need talent on the offensive side of the ball. If somebody with a pick 18 worthy grade is there they probably should take him.
Always depends on who is available but if the scenario unfolds like you said then I have no issue with trading down and adding some depth. That being said if there is a high end prospect at a position of need even if it isn't our greatest position of need (i.e. WR/TE) I would be okay with grabbing them. If we pick a DT or RB or something silly at 18th instead of trading down and getting some depth I would be pissed.
According to the old trade chart, the #18 pick is worth 900 points. The 26th pick is worth 700 points. The 14th pick of the 3rd round is worth 200 points. I'm frequently in favor of trading down. It will just depend on what the Jets' draft board looks like. Following the Combine Beckham could be ranked as highly as #18, but I don't think any of those others will be. If Evans, Watkins, Lee, and Ebron are all gone at #18, I'd be more than a little surprised as not that many teams have needs at WR, plus with it being such a deep draft at WR, I'd be surprised if they went WR that early. Even if they do, imo that means that some other very good players have dropped. I doubt Barr drops, but if Mosely, Mack or Ford are setting there at #18, it might be very hard for them to trade down, yet I'm sure there probably would be teams wanting to trade up for one of those players. Similarly, if one of the top two OTs drop, there probably would be someone wanting to trade up, but would the Jets prefer drafting Brick's replacement now and perhaps starting him at RT if they haven't re-signed Howard by then? For certain, if all the top OLBs, WRs, Ebron and OTs are gone, then I'd hope the Jets could trade down. Even if not, I might prefer they trade down. I definitely think that there's a strong possibility that adding an additional 3rd round pick or possibly multiple picks if there's competition for the Jets' spot could help the team more than just the one player at #18. It's gonna be interesting.
to answer the op, i am not opposed to trading down but i have odb jr rated higher than lee, at this point
To me that is the classical double edge sword that requires a lot of skill and a lot of luck. With the many needs the Jets have is conceivable that a player worthy of the 18th slot is there for us. It is however more realistic to recognize that there is a step down function between the real "could be a superstar must have player" within the first round, probably no more than 8 names or so for us, and the rest of the draft across the first 3 rounds that is rich in skilled positions so trading down would make a lot of sense. Provided of course we get good value by finding a suitable partner with specific needs. The trick is to get such a partner, because as we move much past the first 10 slots, chances are many other teams will be willing to trade down more so than trade up. With the exception of a QB someone is targeting, the tendency will be to trade down. My two cents.
I like the trade down play if these guys are off the board: Mack Barr Watkins Ebron Evans Benjamin Clinton-Dix CJ Mosley Lewan
In a draft this deep I would love to trade down. This is kind of the reverse of the 2007 draft. The 07 draft was regarded as the weakest draft in quite a long time. In that draft we decided, I think very smartly, to trade all our picks for two players we felt strongly about rather than use them in a weak draft. We netted Revis and Harris. In a week draft it made sense to trade up and lose picks. The opposite holds true here in a draft that many regard as the deepest in 10 years. An extra pick in this draft would be more valuable than a pick in a normal draft. Trading down also makes sense as it helps us meet the position of need. If the big 3 WR and Clinton-Dix are gone trading back to 25-30 would be pretty brilliant. I love Beckham and Amare. One of those two or Benjamin or Sebastian Jenkins will be available and fit a big need and give us a good pick where we can add another good football player. We should get4 very good impact football players in rounds 1-3. Trading down and getting 5 very good impact players in rounds 1-3 would be quite a haul. But the problem as mentioned above is trying to get good value for our #18 pick. Lots of people want to trade down and we cannot force people to trade for our pick. Because of the depth of this draft the trade value might be less trading down than a normal draft. But then again if someone is truly in love with a pick at 18 maybe we can get good value. We have to be lucky. One area where I thought Tannenbaum excelled at was getting good value trading picks. Although I love NEs trade philosophy a lot more. NE's drafting has not been very good compared to the Jets but I love how they work the draft board trading back and stockpiling picks. This is a very exciting draft for the Jets and yes I would be very excited by a trade down form 18.
