Just read Suggs might be a salary cap casualty in Baltimore, do you see him signing with Rex and the jets?
Why not? He's better than anyone we have at OLB. I'd pass if the price tag was too high, but Idzik should certainly inquire if the opportunity came up.
He would be a hell of a player in our system and I'm not talking about signing him to a huge contract because if that's what it takes I'll pass. However if he can be available for a one or two year deal I think he can be a difference maker. He would get a ton of one on one looks and everyone knows what this guy is capable of off the edge.
Are you guys serious? You are saying no to Terrell Suggs? Hell to the yes, he would fill the biggest hole we have had for the past 5 years!!!!! He is a legit pass rushing threat in our system he would have 15 sacks, freaking Pace had over 10!!! Calvin Pace!!!!!!!!
This is why we should draft an OLB in the 3rd round. A young, raw OLB simply can't fail in our current system with the line that we have.
He's older, less effective, will probably be very expensive, and he isn't the future. This isn't a team going all in and loading up for a run. It's a rebuilding team. I'd much rather have a drafted rookie playing and getting the experience and developing for the future than an older player who won't be on the team in a couple of years when the team is hopefully ready to seriously compete for the Lombardi Trophy. IMO we all need to think more long term. That's what is in the best interest of the team.
I'll start where i agree with you. I think he would probably end up more expensive than he's worth. He's set to make something like 7.8mil in base this year. If Suggs was willing to come down 3mil, putting him in a much more reasonable range for us, it would also be much more reasonable for the Ravens. They wouldn't let him go over a 4.8mil base. But the argument around needing all young players for a rebuild wears on me. All teams have major turnover every year, and all teams have a mix of young and veteran players. We will most likely end up re-signing Calvin Pace, who also doesn't fit your description of being here in 3 years, when we 'are ready to seriously compete'. Even still, Pace would be a good short term signing. Whether we sign Suggs, or sign Pace, it should not affect our draft in any way. If a good OLB is out there at BPA, you take him. That is how you build for the future. The only thing signing Suggs would affect is how we spend our FA cap room. Obviously signing Suggs would mean less money available to sign other players of other positions (like Offense). So if that asking price was too high, i would agree on passing. If that price was floating around 5mil on a short term deal, it could get very interesting. Suggs would be a massive upgrade over Pace, and pass rush fronts of (Suggs, Wilk, Rich, Coples), or (Suggs, Wilk, Coples, Barnes) would make for serious 3rd down pressure with just the front 4.
Brandon spikes is what we should be looking at since he is gonna be released. ILB is our weakest next to our secondary ! Spikes is one of the best run stuffing ILB . Picture how stingy our D was last year against the run. With spikes , every team's RB is gonna have a bad game. Also herd his voice in the huddle is what makes him a value player we need.
I would agree ILB is weakest next to secondary if you are talking only the D. but on O I would rank Qb as weakest.
the fact that you guys wouldn't want suggs speaks volumes about our fan base we are afraid to take on risk and always assume we will overpay. like c'mon, how can you honestly say no to terrell suggs in rex ryan's system?
Because he is not the same Suggs of three years ago... even two years ago.. Would rather someone young that we can have for the long term... We need to focus on getting long term solutions to every position.. Not 1 or 2 year stop gaps... We will be in the same position in 2016 looking for an OLB if we pick up Suggs... No Thanks.
No one said that every single player on the roster needs to be a rookie or very young. That said, Seattle just won the SB and has the youngest team in the NFL. Following are my reasons why I still disagree with you. First, as you suggested, Suggs isn't likely to come down too much in price for the Jets. If he came down, the Ravens would probably just match or offer more. Second, while Suggs is definitely a better player than Pace, he also likely will cost at least 5-6 times more than what Pace will make. Which could definitely prevent the Jets from signing FAs at other positions of need like OG, S, CB, WR, TE, etc. Third, because Rex has a history with Suggs and Suggs would be making so much, do you honestly think that barring injury, that Suggs would ever come off the playing field and the rookie see any playing time? I don't. That wouldn't be the case with Pace. IMO Pace shouldn't be starting this year. I'd like for that to be a rookie. Even if Pace has to start to begin the season, the hopes would be that the rookie would be used as a pass rush specialist on obvious passing downs initially and by mid-season he would be ready to take on more responsibility and playing time. With Suggs here, I think it would basically be a wasted season for whatever rookie OLB they draft. Sure Suggs might help mentor the rookie, but there's no substitute for playing experience. I really didn't want Pace re-signed this past season. I'd only re-sign him this season as insurance, and that only because he has been with the team for a number of years. Suggs hasn't been with the team. Yes all teams (have a mixture of young and old). The Jets have some older players: Brick, Mangold, Reed, Cromartie (assuming he is re-signed), Harris, Folk, Barnes, Pace (assuming he is re-signed), and Landry (if he is retained), so it's not like by not bring Suggs in they'd have no older, more experienced players. Finally, I'm not so sure Suggs will be the demon you think he will be. His numbers really tailed off over the last part of the season and I think Pace got about the same number of sacks as Suggs. Baltimore's DL is no slouch. There's no reason to think that his number of sacks would jump significantly playing behind our DL. Because he's a year older, and would have to adjust to new teammates, his numbers could actually fall quite a bit. That happens with older players. They get slower, start getting nicked up more. How would you like it if the Jets signed him for even $5 mil a year, which prevented their signing a WR, vet QB or OG in FA, and he either had an awful season, or suffered a season-ending injury in the first few games, and the team would then be paying him all that money for nothing? If Suggs was even 29, I'd be more open to bringing him in, but not at age 31. I've seen enough old and slow OLBs for the Jets to last 2-3 lifetimes.
What you say is true, but that's no reason not to draft an OLB. Pace had 10 sacks too, and he's already here, has chemistry with the rest of his D teammates and will be a whole lot cheaper than Suggs. This most definitely would be Pace's last year if they draft a quality OLB prospect. The bottom line is that before they're ready to make a run in 2016, they need to have a good, young pass rushing OLB in place, not beginning the search.
the guy turned 31 a few months ago, you can keep terrell suggs for 3 years easily. the guy still had 10 sacks this year, imagine what he can do with sheldon and mo taking up blockers. players can still be efficient at older ages now. it's a different time, players can stay in shape well into their 30s
i would love a Terrell SUggs pick up! Draft our future now.. i doubt any rookie could bring his impact right now... 3 year deal ... but if he feels he'ss in his prime or something and wants a ton of money F that...
