Missouri DE Michael Sam comes out Says he's gay and will be first openly gay current nfl player once he's drafted.
Adam Schefter @adamschefter Missouri DE Michael Sam, a projected mid-round pick, said today he's gay. Story now on ESPN2
Que multitudes bitching about how they don't need to know what he does in bed, etc... Remember people, its only news because its so rare to hear an athlete come out, especially in football. A part of me wishes that those athletes in the big 4 that are but are closeted would come out in bulk if they were comfortable with family reactions, if only to make sure that stigma was dead and gone in the future. get it out at once, this way theres no individualized attention to make a player feel like an outlier. That said this might hurt his draft stock, not because any scout wouldn't see him the same, but that many might be concerned he'll cause a media/locker room distraction. (the reason i want a bulk coming out event from athletes to occur in the first place) good luck to him, he's gonna need it unfortunately...
Very brave on his part...Lets see how this plays out in the draft. Would have been interesting to see if he was a 1st round talent
It's surprising to me that he's only considered a mid-round pick, given that he was a unanimous All-American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year, leading the league in sacks and tackles for loss. Anyway, good for him - what he's done unfortunately takes real guts.
I think the JETS will def take a chance on him maybe with a fifth or comp pick . We all know how much Woody loves the headlines . I hope he can play seems like he could be a good pick up if he slide down draft boards because of this .
I don't think his draft stock will be affected. teams shouldn't be concerned about a players personal life. if they can ball, they can ball. Sheldon might have a say in if we land him or not.
So assuming he's still drafted or makes a squad as UDFA this will make him the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL, assuming we don't count Tim Tebow, right? Kudos to him.
