While I know most people on this site think mr.T made a big mistake trading all those picks for veterans and taking chances on high profile rookies, I don't think this should deter the jets from trading up for a difference maker. If someone like sammy Watkins or mike Evans, (more realistic) drops and makes it to the top 13 I would not be against trading up. I would have no problem packaging one of our third round picks with our first to move up and get the big name player we so desperately need. Now I'm not saying we definitely should but I feel more people on this site should be open to the idea. Yes, there maybe a few weapons that couls fall to us but if the scouting department loves one player such as Watkins or Evans it could do wonders for our offense. Lets not forget what Julio jones did for the falcons offense. Including our comp picks we have twelve picks total, plenty of ammunition to trade up and still have ten picks.
As much as JJ did wonders for their offense that didn't make up for that defense that held them back when it came to the playoffs.
It's not like we are trading up when we only have 7 picks, we are stocked with picks this year and have plenty of ammo. We have no targets on the outside and trading a third away for a blue chip #1 wr and a difference maker should not be brushed aside. As I said I'm not a scout but if our scouting departments thinks there is a huge playmaker available, trading up for them is not a terrible idea. Now I'm not sure if someone is capable of being that difference maker and is head and shoulders better than the rest I'm just saying I wouldn't be upset with trading for a player like Sammy Watkins or leap frogging Baltimore to land our guy.
Trading while a team is OTC isn't as easy as most people realize. Parameters have be worked out between teams before the draft starts behind the scenes. It's extremely difficult to get your trade done in 10 minutes and get the league to approve the deal. Getting the teams to agree when one is OTC is tough, because the team that was considering trading down will cancel the deal if "their player" is still available. I understand the talk if trading a pick is exciting, but don't expect it to happen. Idzik was very conservative last year and I don't see much of a change this draft.
If we were a contender and was a piece or two away. Then sure, but no rebuilding team should ever trade up, at least for the most part.
I totally disagree. The reason this team has no depth and so many holes is because Tanny traded up so often. Look at Seattle's roster. Look at all the starters and key depth that were taken with mid and low-round draft picks. Trading up is for chumps. It means the team has fallen in love with a player and thinks only that player can meet their need. IMO it only ever makes sense when one is trying to get a franchise QB, or thinks it is one player away from being a true SB contender, and there is a player who fits their scheme perfectly. The Jets are not one player away. Would it be great to have Watkins or Evans? Undoubtedly, but there are a LOT of excellent WRs in this draft and to trade up for a WR would be foolish. With the dire need the Jets have for WR talent and offensive playmakers, you might have a point if those two were the only two really good WR prospects in the draft, but they aren't, and it still wouldn't be justifiable imo. That is something that fans want the team to do because they fall in love with individual players. GMs are supposed to be smarter, more mature and not "fall in love" with players. For sure, the best ones don't. They stay put or if anything, trade down to garner more picks.
And as far as the redskins rams trade goes a year ago this time you would say the skins got the better of the deal, making the playoffs and getting one of the best young QBs in the game. It just so happens he had a catastrophic injury that screwed up his play this year
Holy hell. NO. Do you play in the NFL for ONLY ONE SEASON? Hell no. Skins got fleeced. Big time. And... ah, right. They don't have their 1st in next year's draft either - because? Exactly. That stupid trade up. Trade down whenever you can - especially if that still allows you to pick the player you targeted. NEVER trade up. NEVER. It is a losing business.
Clearly it works both ways, but if you read my original post I said if the scouting department was convinced one guy could be the number one wide receiver we need and be a true difference maker I wouldn't be against trading up, just don't be so closed minded. And to the person that said we shouldn't because of what the Seahawks did, goodluck hitting the lottery in later rounds and getting franchise players in the fourth fifth and sixth round
It is like a drawing lottery ticket. You don't want to minimize your chance by trading up. A player becoming what the scouting department envisions him to be involves so many variables out of his control - that it is more than a stupid proposition to make. 1. The kid has to be good enough with right mental attitude. [Easiest part.] 2. The team has to have good coaching staff to coach up the kid. [Harder, but still on the easier part of the whole deal.] 3. The kid has to continue the growth without serious injury. [Nobody knows this.] 4. The league trend should be in such way that the said kid is in important role. [Again, who knows this?] So, in this regard, one prospect is not necessarily better than any other - other than his own aptitude as a player. So why do you want to give up another player? Basically you are saying you should go for this 'better' kid, based upon that 'scouting report' in two-for-one deal. That's a real good way to say "Yep. I am god damn stupid." Jets currently hold: 1x 1st 1x 2nd 2x 3rd 1x 4th 2x 5th [1x Comp] 4x 6th [3x Comp] 1x 7th Okay? At the top 100 picks, Jets hold 4. That's not what you call STOCKED with picks. Their comp picks are all in low rounds, and you do not want to draft a starter out of that group under any circumstance. These picks should be for depth purposes. By the way, you cannot trade comp picks. You are still stuck with 8 - so, are you saying Jets should trade the good picks away since they got garbage comp picks coming in later in round 5 and 6? Are you fucking nuts?
I think trading up in the first round doesnt make much sense... There are to many good prospects this year. However, if in the later rounds (past the 3rd) if there is a guy we absolutely love i would like to see some aggressiveness by Idzik to give the scouting staff a boost in confidence and the franchise some notoriety within the NFL.
This argument is ridiculous how can you say all prospects are alike due to outside circumstances. There ARE some prospects who are better than others that the whole point of a scouting department. It's not like a lottery ticket, you have to have faith in your coaching and scouting department to make the proper evaluations. Say Sammy Watkins falls to the tenth spot (crazier things have happened) I will personally be yelling at the screen to move up.
Lets say we wanted to move from 18 ----> 6 to grab Watkins. By looking at the draft chart it would cost us our first, second one of our thirds and our fourth. Obviously we can take picks from next year's draft, but the point is that it would cost a ton. Is Watkins or Evans really worth that?
If Sammy Watkins somehow falls to 18, I will personally be screaming from the bottom of my lung to trade the pick away. This draft is very deep in fact. The scouting report may 'claim' so. Stupid move all around, if I had to tell you.
