http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2014/nfls-best-playoff-quarterbacks-dvoa-and-dyar More playoff stats, pretty interesting. Mark Sanchez being on there is nice to see. Again, TB performance doesn't blow away PM let alone surpass it in most cases.
Reading these articles though, I can't wait until I have some free time to dig up old Joe Montana games.
Almost every article I read about QBs, anyone who saw Montana play only has the greatest things to say about him. Reading these articles that are even advanced stats, Montana still comes ahead so far of everyone else. It's amazing. I can't wait to watch him. It's incredible how at such a highly debated position, most writers have him as an easy, clear #1 QB.
The other two for me would be Sammy Baugh and Johnny Unitas. I have seen two entire Baugh games and obviously plenty of highlights. He was bigger than most players. He was a towering figure literally and figuratively, like Ben Roethlisberger in a way but more athletic. Baugh threw good passes even though he was working with a differently shaped ball. Unitas was highly efficient and a true wizard at the position. He was a very awkward looking player like Peyton Manning.
Hmm interesting. If you don't mind answering, I have a question about Fran Tarkenton... A lot of announcers are saying Russell Wilson is the modern version of Tarkenton because of the way Russell moves in the pocket. I think announcers say this because of that quick reverse spin Wilson can pull in the pocket that in highlight videos Tarkenton did often. Are the rest of their games similar, or is it that unique ability that made announcers make that connection, and would you consider it accurate? Follow up, with the goalposts in the front of the EZ, I saw a highlight of Tarkenton backpedaling through them and unintentionally or intentionally using it as a screen on DE once to buy an extra second of time. Did QBs even run backwards into them for a safety without realizing? I feel like it could have been a common occurrence.
I made Tarkenton-Wilson comparisons before I heard or saw others make the comparison. Initially, people were comparing Wilson to Brees. Doug Flutie is a better comparison than Brees. Tarkenton frequently would backpedal to give his receivers more time to get open and also obviously to get away from pass rushers. Tarkenton's arm strength was not anything special relative to other quarterbacks. That seems true of Wilson too. I have not run across instances of a QB running into a post and being tackled for a safety if that is what you are asking. Goal posts in the end zone did create a lot of problems though. In Super Bowl 7, Jerry Smith of the Redskins likely would have caught a touchdown pass if not for the fact Billy Kilmer's pass hit a post. There is also a clip of a Browns receiver running into a post and being hit right in the stomach. I think the guy was Gary Collins.
Thanks! Yeah I never saw enough similarity between Brees and Wilson to make that type of connection. Yeah the QB running into the post was silly, but I saw in one highlight Tarkenton nimbly avoid them I figured maybe someone less coordinated might have forgot about them once and well created a funny play  Kind of like when Dan Orlovosky forgot about the back of the end zone in general. From a quick google search, it seems like safety was the reason for moving the goalposts back. That makes sense, I could only imagine in todays NFL someone being thrown into the post or something.
just like Indy '06 the D drove NYG to the 2 titles but unlike Indy '06 the QB for NYg played very well in both runs. Peyton has been playing for 15 years, why hasn't the ball bounced for him more? I don't buy that, sure you can get upset now and then but the amount of one and dones is astounding, 14 PPG in playoff losses is astounding, it's not a luck thing. Eli is not a HOF QB, but he's been very good in postseason- something his brother has not been.
Would Peyton had won 4 Super Bowls if he played on the 49ers? Would Montana had won 1 Super Bowl if he had played on the Colts/Broncos? Im sorry, I never watched Montana play but I have to believe he would have won at least 1 Super Bowl. On the flipside, I dont think Peyton would have won 4 if he was on the 49ers. I could be wrong though, I didnt live through that dynasty, so if anyone who did watch the 49ers dynasty cares to comment, go for it.
Peyton probably gets 1 SB w/ SF, remember that Steve Young was handed the keys to a dynasty and only managed to win one thanks to Dallas screwing things up w/ Jimmy Johnson. I see Peyton as a Young type as a great reg season, struggling postseason QB. Montana would have won at least 3-4 in Indy. the eras were different as there was no FA but Montana won 2 SBs w/o Jerry Rice where a good WR in Dwight Clark was his go to guy. Clark would have been a 3rd WR in the Colts offense. SF had better Ds but Indy's Ds were more than good enough.
How was Steve Young handed keys to a dynasty...and how is winning one SB a problem? You realize how good the NFC was back then?
The game where Peyton really blew it imo was the Steelers/Colts game. I rewatched that game a couple of times and its amazing how inept the Colts offense was for the first three quarters. They showed no fight at all, Ben went right down the field on the opening drive, Peyton goes 3 and out(I believe), Ben goes down the field again and its 14-0. Colts offense only put up 3 points through three quarters. IMO thats the game where the perception on Manning changed and his reputation as a post season choker was born (I know the prior year they came out flat in New England). They had homefield advantage, they beatup the Steelers already that season, and they came out so flat it was unreal.
They had just come off winning 2 of the last 3 SBs and got upset in the title game. They had championship talent though some of the names were getting old and leaving but they still had boatloads of talent. SF was as talented as Dallas, the difference btw the teams was at QB. It's why Dallas won 3 and SF won 1 w/ Young. That is the game where he was given multiple gifts and still couldn't pull it out. Polamalu picked him off which basically would have ended all hopes but they reversed it, then after goping 4 and out and taking a sack on 4th down inside his 5 Jerome Bettis fumbles and Indy returns it near midfield. Something else happened which I forgot but w/ 2nd and 3rd and 2 from the Pitt 26 he took 2 shots at the EZ rather than get closer for his K who was the Peyton version of kickers(great reg season, can't trust him in postseason).
Thats the Colts team that should have won the Super Bowl. They were the best team in the entire league. I know the 2009 team lost but I always thought the Saints were the better team anyway. The 2005 Colts team blew it, Denver had just knocked off New England the day before to, so they knew New England was going to be playing them in the championship game.
The difference between the Young Niners and the Aikman Cowboys was QB? :rofl2::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:
'05 they were the best team w/o a doubt. I think they were better than NO in '09 too but it wasn't by a wide margin, in '05 they were much better than everyone else.
