The 2006 Colts were not a defensive team (22.5 ppg -- 23rd in the NFL). They won a couple of playoff games playing good defense against mediocre offences. They gave up 34 in the AFC championship.
They gave up a total of 51 pts in 4 playoff games, 12.8 per game. They won w/ D. manning had one great half in the title game, other than that didn't do much and the D allowed 27 not 34, big game Peyton threw another TD to the wrong team which he has done numerous times in his postseason career. D allowed 12.8 PPG, they won w/ D.
what you just responded with has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Sanchez fumbled away a TD in the biggest of moments. Wilson did not. Wilson recognizes blitzes, he protects the football, he converts clutch first downs with his arm and with his legs. He did so throughout the regular season, helping his team earn a bye and home field advantage, and continued that consistency throughout the playoffs. stop embarrassing yourself by trying to turn this into another pro-Sanchez anti-Manning thread. It's about Seattle, and where the Jets needs to grow.
yep, it was mark's fault he was blindsided in 2 secs on a play that really should have been an incomplete pass anyway. I like Wilson but he had it much easier than mark w/ a MUCH better D, better homefield edge and better weapons. I don't think mark wins in Seattle b/c I think their OL is mediocre and Wilson's legs help a lot more but if mark had Seattle's D he'd have SBs.
Seattle's D was number 1 in the league this year, and may just have been the best i've seen in 10 years. It's been a few years in the making, and they've gotten better every year. they've drafted excellently, and struck some gold with late picks, especially in the secondary. Their strength is the back end forward, w/o really any weaknesses to speak of. Our D's were very good. Part of me will always wonder how much impact a healthy Kris Jenkins would have had. But '09 and '10 are a ways off now. Bad drafting in 08, 09, and 10, along with some cap risk moves which didn't pay off, has resulted in a full blown rebuild. I think only Harris, Kyle Wilson, maybe Pace, D'brick and Mangold will still be on the roster in '14. So where do we go this offseason? I'm sure Rex must have been salivating watching Seattle's D in the SB. It's what he's always envisioned. But we don't have the luxury of chasing after the dream of an all time D, not with all the deficiencies we have on O. We absolutely have to improve the secondary, and add some depth to the LB crew. I think we need to retain Folk, get a returning threat, and add to the depth of our team which can improve ST. But we also need to strengthen the Oline, and get some sure handed route runners that can make plays. I think the latter is the most important in the short term. Add it all up, and this is what i get from Seattle's success: - our core philosophy is sound. no need to change it. - we must draft well for long term success - even if D will be our strength, we must have some balance on O and ST - protect the football That is what i challenge Rex and Idzik with. I liked what i saw in terms of direction in '13, but lots of building still needs to be done.
I think junc just loves to find how many threads he can turn off-topic into a Mark Sanchez thread. He's gone. He's irrelevant to the Jets. He was an average QB his first two years here followed by two below average years. He won some playoff games with the best O-line in football, best running game in football, and the best defense in football. He was what he was. He wasn't the worst QB in the league. He also wasn't anywhere near the best. We spent a #5 overall pick on him. We expected more. We moved on. Time for you to do the same.
a healthy Jenkins makes a huge difference but pouha played well, the biggest thing we lacked was a pass rush. we are not far rom a big time D, we have a pass rush now, we have a dominating DL. if we can keep improving the speed at LB and get some safety help we'll be a truly great D.
Jenks would have made a huge difference with his physicality, and a big improvement on our pass rush. had to double team him, freeing up Ellis 1 on 1, and more free lanes for blitzers. Seattle's d-line is best at stuffing the run. The great secondary, and usually playing with a lead, makes them look a little better at pass rushing than they might be individually. Agreed our current squad desperately needs a FS. I'm alright with Landry at SS. He was our most consistent member of the secondary this year. Milliner is still a question mark, but i hope he can improve. Cro might be gone. If he is, I'd spend some loot on a top FA CB like Verner. Davis didn't do much this year, but hopefully he can improve. Barnes, can he come back to form and help the pass rush? Will Pace be back or will we look elsewhere? Can Coples become a true OLB force in year 2 of his conversion? Lots of questions for the FO to consider this offseason. If we can address the secondary, i don't think we'll be too far off from top 5 again though.
that Barnes injury was huge and is kind of forgotten. he was harassing QBs and if he's healthy w/ this DL he could be huge in 2014. I loved the way Milliner ended 2013, I expect Cro back and I think we'll see 2012 Cro rather than 2013. I am not worried about corner unless Cro leaves.
You absolutely lost me when you are asking the New York Jets to equal the Seattle Seahawks offensively in regards to them winning the Super Bowl. They won the Super Bowl with probably the most suffocating defense I have seen in a long time NOT THEIR OFFENSE. I have not seen a defense dismantle someone since the Bucs did it to the Raiders and the Ravens to the Giants in those respective Super Bowls. If the Jets had a defense like that this year, we would be in the same position. As a matter of fact, I think Geno can be MORE explosive than Wilson because he has a higher ceiling as a true passer. The Seahawks asked Wilson to get 1st downs and not turn the ball over and he did that and they won because of their defense. Rex Ryans is MUCH MUCH MUCH more innovative than what Pete Carroll did this year. When you have Pro-Bowl type talent you can match up man to man and not do any exotic looks or blitzes. THEY WON THE SUPER BOWL BASED ON DEFENSIVE TALENT, NOT SCHEMES. You really think you can out smart Peyton Manning? The guy has seen everything. Seattle just straight up put the smack down on that fancy, non-physical Broncos attack.
So they were a defensive team that won a Super Bowl? Defense -- 23rd in ppg Offense -- 2nd in ppg They were not a defensive team. They played good defense for 2 games in the playoffs.
the reg season is meaningless in postseason. it is about what you do in postseason. In 2007 the Giants were 17th in pts but in postseason they allowed 16.3 PPG In 2011 NYg was 25th in pts allowed, in postseason they allowed 13.5 PPG Indy's D keyed that run, the O was not very good outside of the 2nd half against NE. D won them that SB
Well since geno blows, I don't see the jets doing anything productive until they get themselves a REAL quarterback.
While Seattle have a great D that offense can put up 50 any given sunday. In fact they had consecutive 50 points game in the 2012 season and one of those game was against a great SF defense. Let's not get carried away here. Seattle's offense did not punt even once in the SB. It's hard to beat any team that doesn't punt the football. That's what dual threat QBs bring to the table, they convert a lot of 3rd downs. Carolina with Cam is another team that is very good on 3rd down. That's why they were 12-4. 3rd down conversions keep the defense rested and the other team's defense on their heels. The broncos didn't know what hit them chasing wilson all over the field. We need to make use of Geno's leg. I'm not talking read option stuff but buying time for his receivers to run 40 yards down field. That means we need receivers that are legitimate threat to catch the football when they down field. Add that to a good defense we have ourselves a team similar to the panthers that can compete with a team like seattle and SF.
the O is good, underrated but they never scored 50. The games they scored 50 they got STs/D TDs t get them over 50 and they never scored over 50 against SF. won 42-13 in 2012 but "only" 35 O pts.
No way. I follow the Niners so I've seen the Hawks. They are similar to Jets in that they are a good defense that struggles to score. The Hawks have an amazing secondary--big hard hitting holding with great corners. Remember that Carroll is originaly a DB coach. He gets the most out of his secondary. To be like the Hawks Jets would need: 1. Someone like Revis or Sherman at corner 2. A dominant safety 3. A star running back like Marshan Lynch But those pieces are very hard to find. (P.S. It's not that the Seahawks were great in the Superbowl. It's really that the Broncos were god awful. I don't know why more people don't see that)
