VIck may be the best available FA Qb, but the caveat there is when healthy. Imo the Jets do not need someone who is unlikely to make it through a full season. That is a huge problem, imo.
I don't think Vick will end up with Jets. A few reasons. 1) He will look to start. Though Jets are not high on Geno, I don't think they are ready to bench Geno for Vick. 2) Vick will probably ask for a starter money and Jets aren't in a position to offer him that. A miserable team will give him the starting job and offer him more money than Jets will consider offering. 3) Idzik looks like a guy who doesn't want controversy. Vick will bring some baggage like dog fight etc. and don't think Idzik will be down with that type of attention.
Well the connection is obvious with MM at OC so he already knows the offense. We're hopefully bringing in all new receivers so no matter who is behind center they will be passing to new faces for the most part. He will most likely come cheap but has high upside when healthy. Would make a great backup QB or plan B if Geno fails.
#1 is true, but I'd welcome competition. If he beats Geno, start him until he gets injured. If not, then he's a great backup and can be a good veteran presence at the position and can teach some things to Geno. #2 isn't really true, as Vick took a really cheap deal on the Eagles last year. #3. The dog thing is long over. He's supposedly a better man now and has learned from those mistakes. I don't see what kind of baggage he would bring. Some fans will still be bitter about it and you know all the NY beat writers will mention it constantly right after he arrives, however, but there isn't any "baggage".
Great. Just what all teams want to build around ... A used up QB who can't stay on the field, and when he does, he constantly gives the ball to the other team. Sounds like a solid plan moving forward. I'm not against bringing in a QB to compete with Geno, as long as it's a young guy with an upside. If not that, than just give Geno another year to develop and have a veteran backup here to help him along. Competing against Michael Vick is a waste of time. I'd like to see Idzik build a team that will be in the playoffs year after year, competing for a title. Bringing in Vick, and possibly have him starting is not a step in that direction.
Vick has stated pretty clearly he wants to start, so I can't imagine a scenario in which he doesn't go to a team that has at least promised him the ability to compete for a job. Not sure why so many here are saying to sign him as a backup - I don't believe he would do that. Btw I am NOT saying the Jets won't do exactly that, just that unless he is offered the chance to possibly start - he won't sign.

Michael Vick got Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg fired in Philadelphia. I don't think Rex and Marty M are going to let either of the guys above get them fired in NY.
I mentioned it in a previous post but will repeat here; Vik was never able to use his natural abilities to lead a team to the VLT. He was one of the most gifted athletes but never able to take his team to the next level. It wasn't until his gifts started to decline that he actually became the QB that he is now, and it's too late at that point as his body can't get through an entire season. I'd much rather have a more cerebral, pocket QB behind him, trying to teach him the intricacies of the game and let his athletic ability compliment that. Instead of relying on his legs / athleticism to succeed.

Vick was successful under MM when healthy. Vick has shown that he can be a capable pocket passer. Vick has experience and can teach Geno things like how to mix in the runs and passing. I expect Vick to be strictly a backup so health isn't really something to worry about.
Guess depends on your definition of "successful", and how much value you put in the "when healthy" statement. We don't want a backup that would have us on our heels every game should our #1 ever go down. I would worry each week that he would be hurt and we'd be down to QB #3. Vick was never a great QB by any definition. He has always been a great athlete and in his latter years learned that he can stay in the pocket and complete passes and be better off then trying to tuck and run every play. He still to this day hasn't learned how to keep himself healthy and regardless of him being a "changed" man, I still wouldn't pick him as a role model for anyone I cared about. Bottom line is I don't think he adds enough value for the price tag he'll command this offseason.
Would be an absolutely terrible move. Aside from being a scumbag, the guy has shown that he can't stay healthy. He also has a huge ego, and you have to be smoking crack to think that he would be happy in a backup role. If we brought him in to start he would get hurt after a couple of games and then we would be left with Geno starting regardless, only without the proper preparation time as a starter (again) and again we'd be scrambling to find a backup mid-season.
It could be he's on their radar. Based on things said recently by Woody and Idzik it looks like they will probably bring in somebody to really compete for the starting job but I was hoping it wasn't Mike Vick. Of course Mike will not want a super low salary. You would think he'll want around 5 mil plus incentives. He made around ten with the Eagles last season. I hope they go in another direction but everytime I say it they don't.
If people merely want someone to back up Smith, which I can't understand, they should just accept Simms as the backup and move on with it. Why? Because if they don't want to UPGRADE Qb play with a player better than Smith, then just settle for Simms as the backup. He's already shown he can come into the game, call the plays and even move the ball, somewhat. Competition at camp? Cut Simms loose! See what happens! Seriously, the Jets need better play at Qb.
