I think it's clear from today only DL is close. Our ILB, whole secondary, ST, and whole offense needs improvement.
Its promising that Idzik came from this organization. Its promising that Rex is capable of delivering a D like we saw tonight Everything else remains to be seen
If you're making those picks every year and you have talent in the scouting department you have a good chance to get there. If you're not making the picks most years and your scouting department is mediocre you don't have a prayer.
I think we have a solid foundation in place. Wilkerson Coples Richardson Davis Harris Cromartie Allen Kerley Nelson Ivory Powell Cumberland We need to add to this and hope that Milliner and Geno step up.
Old Rexy boy was right. Great defense, punishing rush attack wins championships. Glad it's proven true in a big way with all this finesse throw throw throw offense. Decent no mistake cotrolling offense and Great blugeoning defense just pummeled the most prolific offense in history.....go figure.
Cromartie and Harris I could use with slightly less money. Agree on the DL. Allen, Nelson, Powell I think all make up the reliable player role and nothing more. That's perfectly fine and maybe they jump to another level, but to me right now they are reliable. Of course Geno and Milliner are key and then whoever we get this year. I don't want to speculate on those two since they have their own threads and on the draft since it has it's on sub forum. I think if we draft well this year, our ST should get better with younger and hopefully more talented players. I wasn't a fan of our punt or kickoff coverage.
Close to half the people on that least need to be replaced over the short-term. The only really solid building blocks the Jets have right now are Mangold, Wilkerson, Richardson, Harrison, Coples, Davis and Kerley. To that they need to have Geno and Milliner step up and a whole bunch of other guys either raise their level of play or get replaced. And I'm really not hostile to the platoon of Ivory and Powell at RB but that position is like a demolition derby that changes dramatically for many teams from year to year.
We just need to fill in some pieces and get cohesive, chemistry has to be the main ingredient. Denver had the better weapons but the underated Seattle receivers played with a chip and made play after play.
The words I would use to describe the Seahawks on the defensive side are young, hungry, swarming and dominating. There were no weak links on that defense. Peyton Manning destroyed the Jets in 2009 because Darrelle Revis couldn't cover everybody and the Jets couldn't get enough pressure on him to make him throw at Revis. The Seahawks destroyed Peyton Manning tonight by having every one of their guys in the secondary cover like Darrelle Revis, for less than Revis makes combined, and by forcing him to throw checkdowns on play after play. They then swarmed to the ball and punished the guy who caught it with 2 and 3 guys hitting the receiver on almost every play. It was a text book case of giving the QB nothing but bad options so that even if he hit most of them he was still screwed.
09-10 was very close to this. just gotta get that secondary with big hard hitting corners and safeties.
People are really underestimating Russell Wilson. While it's true you need a good defense and running game in the playoffs, lots of posters are acting like Wilson is just a game manager type quarterback, which if you watch Seattle games in the playoffs, is really not true. He is not asked to throw as often as some other marquee quarterbacks, but the guy is an outstanding player. He is basically unsackable with the way he moves around and buys time for his receivers to get open, almost never turns the ball over, and routinely makes big throws when needed. Today, in the superbowl, he was just killing Denver early on, converting 3rd down after 3rd down. So Seattle is just a really good all around team, not one with a great defense and crappy Sanchez/Geno type qb. Just like 49ers, and Baltimore last year.
That's what is scary about SEA, it wasn't a strategy to just beat Peyton Manning, it's a strategy that will work more often than not on any QB. beat up the receivers, tackle well, don't give up big plays, get to the QB without selling out to the blitz. You rarely see PM, even after surgery, dink and dunk that much. The biggest plays also came on 3rd and long, because they have the ability to cover every receiver and get pressure at the same. It makes what the Jets D did in 2009 and 2010 really impressive considering the lack of talent of playmakers they had compared to SEA. The flip side is of course they weren't as good as SEA those years and they couldn't ride them to a SB like SEA did
I think people aren't necessarily underestimating him, but realized he doesn't need to be great for the offense to succeed. Yes he played well, but the offense didn't need to go through just him. Think about the QB heavy teams like NE and DEN. The offense has to run through them and succeed through them. If it struggles, the team struggles. That's not the case with SEA and Wilson. Baltimore was more their QB getting hot at the right time. Joe Flacco had a GREAT SB run, really good, but overall he isn't that type of QB overall. The 49ers are similar, though I think they rely on Kaep for the offense to succeed more so than Seahawks and Wilson
Rome wasn't built in a day I think we have a good foundation. I like Hakim as a potential punt/kick returner.
Oh yeah, I'm not saying the Jets are doomed. I like where they are, but as you said, to make the leap to SEA in two years EVERYTHING has to go right and break right. I think they can still develop into a very talented team
That's awfully optimistic. In order for that to happen, several things have to happen quickly. 1) Perhaps first and foremost,Geno has to learn not to turn the ball over. 2) Idzik needs to show that he learned a LOT from Schneider about building a roster, identifying the type of players they want and then being able to spot them in FA and the draft. 3) The OL needs to be overhauled. 4) The Jets have to get the depth at WR and other positions. 5) Just as importantly, Rex has to develop in his players the discipline that Carroll has in his. Seahawks players love Carroll and it's obvious he loves them just as Jets players love Rex and he loves them. IMO the big difference is that Seahawks players play smart, tough and disciplined football consistently and create TOs, the Jets don't do any of those things consistently, and rarely create TOs. Schneider is clearly one of, if not THE best GM in the NFL, and Carroll just as clearly is probably THE top HC, or one of the top 2-3. Idzik and Rex have a lot of growing and proving to do.
