He died of an apparent heroin overdose in his Greenwich Village apartment. He had been clean for 23 years, but fell back into drug abuse in the past year. He was an excellent actor, and of course became part of the "Hunger Games" series in the last movie. The next movie is in post-production, but they are filming the final installment now, so I wonder how they're going to handle that.

    RIP.

Damn. Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Capote...and I love me some Charlie Kaufman movies but Hoffman was the only reason I made it through Synecdoche, New York. Brant in The Big Lebowski. Damn. R.I.P

This is a shocker. He doesn't really fit in the "fat funny man" category that has given us tragedies like John Belushi, John Candy and Chris Farley. Not that he's not funny or even fat but he just didn't seem to let it all hang out the way those guys did.

I hope Jonah Hill is clean.

Wow what a shame. He was a very good actor, loved him in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Owning Mahoney and Doubt and was actually pretty funny in Along Came Polly. Having said that he was in one of the worst critically acclaimed movies I've seen in years The Master. Bad movie, he was really bad and Joaquin Phoenix was awful.

RIP, he'll be missed as an actor.

The days of being shocked by the death of anyone via overdose have been gone for a while.

hopefully this will bring some attention to the heroin problem that has been running rampant in the past 15 years. and worse than ever now..

i can remember len bias passing due to a cocaine overdose, and i will tell you that kept me from doing it for a long long time. i thank him for that.

What a terrible shame, very sad news.

He leaves behind 3 kids (11, 8, & 6 years old). What a complete douche. I feel so bad for his kids. They relied on him to be a dad, and he failed miserably. Great actor, waste of a human.

Yes I'm sorry. What a complete douche asshole fuck up dickwad.

The man just died and left 3 kids.

Nothing that gets said here is going to change that.

So let's dump on what a complete douche druggie waste of a human he was.

Because that makes some of us feel better about ourselves.

    Like I said, stay classy.

Classy is sweeping it under the rug that he failed as a family man? Oh, but he really played some great characters in movies I like, so let's all pay tribute.

There are anonymous people living day to day that DON'T use drugs, go to work, support families and take care of their bodies. Those people deserve praise, not those that can't find their recreational escape limits. The man is trash in my eyes.

Pretty sure no one is nominating him for Man of the Year awards, just appreciating his talent as an actor and lamenting that specific loss.

But I'm sure you spend all your hours championing the anonymous heroes of life. Or did you just decide to use someone's obituary for that opportunity?

That OD was the main reason the Celtics dynasty petered out in the late 80's. Bird and company got old and the guy who would have been the centerpiece of the next dynasty was not there.

That's a bit over-simplifying things. He had an addiction, it's not like he just woke up one morning and was like "hmm...today I feel like bacon, eggs and heroin." He had a problem. The tragedy in all of it is that he didn't get help.

That being said if he never started doing it in the first place then you never have to worry about it. That's always my catch with addiction, I recognize it as an issue and that the person needs help but if you never start down that path then you never get to that point. It's a poor life choice.

So, like someone said, hopefully it gets enough attention that it scares a few people away from doing it.

Who is sweeping anything under the rug? A guy none of us know personally died of a drug overdose. Left kids behind.

There is no reason good or bad to praise him or dump on him as a father or a family man or a friend or a human being.

We're not lamenting the man none of us knew. We're just lamenting the loss of an actor we liked. The person on the screen, not the man.

But you keep calling the man trash because that's classy and maybe makes you feel better.

It's unnecessary piling on. Won't change anything.

    Like I said, stay classy.
