Don Driver, Marquest Colston, TJ Houshmandzadeh, Rod Smith, heck, even Don Maynard. all drafted in the 7th round or later. There's always diamonds in the rough and it's Idziks job to find them. It's not always necessary to drop $10M+/yr on a FA.
I really think we should X cro and offer a deal to either Verner* or Davis. They were both top 10 corners in the league this year and are both only 25. One of them pairing with Dee and addressing the FS position also will make for an extremely revamped secondary in my opinion. Why not other FA corners? Mainly just the age aspect, but other young corners like Chris harris jr. just tore his ACL and captain munnerlyn is too small for the tackling Rex likes from his corners I think. Sam shields is interesting also, I personally just do not like him. *I read an article a few weeks ago about the titans probably not resigning Verner and going after a different corner due to the fact that he doesnt fit their scheme well. Hopefully the UCLA boy would be okay making his way to NYC...
That is not the way to rebuild this football team..It's nice to find a gem late in the draft but we shouldn't pass on improvements for the team because we think Idzik can find the next Marques Colston in the 7th round. I'm not endorsing Orakpo until we see what he's asking for but you have to go out and get guys to make your team better not rely on late round picks.
I like him but he's a band aid... If he comes i hope it's an incentive deal with little guaranteed $$$
That can go both ways though, we don't know the exact philosophy Idzik will have until this offseason starts. A lot of people get too wrapped up in the no money situation we had as well, assuming that is the only reason we didn't do more in F/A. There were moves that could have been made but a passive approach was taken. The way Idzik has talked, the actions he has taken this far, all seem to resemble the way the Seahawks run their business. The Seahawks haven't went after extremely big names guys in F/A, Harvin and Avril were viewed as lower tier F/A out of the top tier/ second tier options. They didn't break the bank with those guys and they were going for low cost high output type players in F/A. All while building through the draft with a BPA approach. That is exactly what I think Idzik will do as well. We are on the same page for the most part, I just think guys like Orakpo are going to ask to much in comparison to his overall value. Basically (and I hope I'm right) I don't think Idzik is dumb enough or willing to over pay for a player in F/A, I think it will all be calculated and if a guy like Orakpo refuses to come to the Jets for what Idzik thinks he's worth, then I think he will move on to the next option that works best for this team.
I agree that we don't know what Idzik will do yet, but to say Avril and Harvin weren't top tier acquisitions is off base. Avril signed a 2 year, 30 million dollar deal. The Seahawks gave up a first round pick for Harvin and then signed him to a 6 year, 67 million dollar deal. Those are top tier moves.
God no. Paying large third contracts to aging FA players is an asinine way of building a football team.
I am corrected. I forgot the Seahawks traded for, Harvin. Cliff Avril was a top tier talent, I'm not disputing that, I'm just saying he wasn't a Mario Williams tier, in which they broke the bank for him. In my eyes, that is a very manageable contract which sounds about right in terms of what he is worth. I don't think they over paid for his services by any means. I believe Harvin is a whole other story.
This is incorrect. I believed he turned down a three year $30 million deal from the Lions in 2012 and ended up only getting a 2 year $15 million deal from the Seahawks the year after. Avril was not a top tier acquisition and the Harvin deal is not looking stellar right now. Avril and Michael Bennett were very low risk maneuvers for the Seahawks. Bennett is going to cash in big time.
The old successful Steelers model would probably let Larry Foote go and move either Worilds or Jones inside, resolving the logjam at LB by keeping the guys who aren't at their expiration date in the mix. They did draft a decent prospect in the 6th round last year to play inside and they may be thinking he's going to be the ticket there for them. The defense is built around LB's though and letting a young fairly talented one go is just not the norm for the Steelers.
IMO Wimbley would be a waste of cap and roster space. He's never lived up to his billing coming out of college. He's not very good, and not much younger than Pace. I'd rather have Pace.
I really, really wanted the Jets to sign Avril, but of course, that made too much sense, so now he's wrecking havoc elsewhere. You suck, Tanny.
It's never necessary to pay $10M a year to a free agent. Occasionally doing that is the least bad option when you have a very narrow problem in front of you and the free agent resolves it completely.
