Idzik ill try to trade him. But I could see two scenarios unfold.
If Idzik finds some interest but not enough to make an offer by March 25th they may eat the 2 million roster bonus to buy time to trade him, and also leave in the minds of other teams that might have a vague interest that the Jets may be renegotiating (even though deep down they know that won't be the case).

The more likely option is he's cut at the very last minute before the roster bonus is due.

Idzik can't trade Mark. Only the Sanchize fans would make that deal (and I wish they would). Nobody in their right mind will give up anything for him even if he does renegotiate. He'll sign a conditional deal with no guaranteed money (remember the guy is also coming off of a season ending injury). The only thing I've heard that makes a little sense is that maybe a year off actually will help Mark. But I really don't think he'll ever change. If given a free rein he'll continue to make the same mistakes. If he is put under strict controls by the OC and only allowed to conservatively manage a game he might (like his first two seasons) be capable of being ok and not screwing things up for an offense. Mark is not a smart player. You're not going to win if you depend on his intellect. When you continue to make the same mistakes over and over your football IQ is low like his is. And when opposing players make jokes about you after a game and how easy you were to read and fake out this is not the player you want to lead your team.

A team wont trade for him because most of the bottom teams have picks in the draft and giving up a pick for a QB wouldnt make sense, especially considering the whole world knows he is getting cut and will be getting a new contract that isnt anywhere as big as the current one.

Not so sure why $5 mill a year is crazy. Alex Smith resigned with San Fran for I believe 4 million a year in 2009 after putting up far worse numbers per game played, having a sub .500 record with no playoff berths and coming off a year on IR due to an injured shoulder.

Different circumstance, I'm sure if they had a young QB that they were high on that played the year before, they probably cut ties with Alex.

Right now we have a young QB that we're developing. He has a year under his belt and that's the direction the team should go in. Keeping Sanchez around just to satisfy his marks (pun intended) is not a sound strategy.

I'm strictly talking about the 5 million a year. People acting like Sanchez getting that from some team is crazy. Alex Smith got 4 after not living up to his draft status and coming off a shoulder injury just like Sanchez. And that was 5 years ago; I would think now 5 million would be comparable.

But they weren't really giving up on him the 49ers intended to go back to Alex.

This simply not true. You just simply want it to be true for the sake of your argument that Sanchez is some kind of unique case which he is not. It was a new regime and he was going to be cut because like Sanchez he was expected to make too much money when compared to his production. HE approached the FO about taking a pay cut to stay and compete for the job, which he ultimately lost to Shaun Hill.

Keep a few bottles of Eiswein with your champagne. I might tag along when Mark is cut.

Alex had 3 season ending injuries. They thought that they hadn't seen enough of him to give up on him. After poor production and injuries he had to take a pay cut. The next point is that there was not a competition in 09. Hill had a solid year in 08 so they went into that season with him as the starter ala (Kerry Collins-Vince Young in 09) after a bad game in 09 they immediately benched Hill for Alex for the rest of the season.

Hill had a leg up because of this strong finish in 08 but there was still a competition. Smith would have not re-up if he knew he had no shot at winning the job. He just failed to win it. It wouldn't be any different from Sanchez and Geno. Geno would have the leg up for sure but Sanchez could still overtake him if he played well.

He re-upped because he thought he would get his job back. Had they told him that they were moving on they wouldn't have kept him. The bold is the main reason why Hill was back, they figured that long term he could be a backup.

So your whole argument now is that the 49ers lied to him to fool him into taking a pay cut under the false premise that he would get an opportunity to win the starting job when in fact they had no intention of doing so? In the words of Tony "Scarface" Montana "What you talking crazy for?" Come on dude, Smith was given his opportunity and did not take advantage. Sometimes what it looks like and said to be is actually what it is.

When did I say they lied to him? I said that he knew that he would get an opportunity to start and that they weren't gonna give up on him because they hadn't seen enough of him. That's my point. Shaun Hill had a solid 2008 season so they brought him back as the favorite to start the season. They knew Hill was not the long term answer at QB.

It depends on what your definition of "not giving up" on someone is. Does it means asking someone to drastically cut his/her current salary which is contractually binding for another 2 years to less than half in return for only the "opportunity" at getting their old job back or else see you later? If that's it, then it's still possible that the Jets may end up "not giving up" on Sanchez either. Can you imagine your boss giving you those same options while at the same time telling you "hey bud I haven't giving up on you and hadn't seen enough"?

Again I fail to see how Smith's situation at this same time in 2009 is any different from Sanchez right now (if that's a point you are still trying to make)? The parallel will cease to exist only when the Jets officially cut Sanchez. Up until that moment, they are practically mirror images of each other.

    Here's what we do know.
-Like Sanchez, Smith was a high draft pick hadn't lived up to expectations.
-Like Sanchez, Smith's contract was not commensurate with his production.
-Like Sanchez, it was a for gone conclusion by almost everyone he would be released.
-Like Sanchez, it was reported that Smith had suitors waiting to hand him a starting spot upon his release.
-Like Sanchez, Smith was coming off a season on IR due to a shoulder injury.
-Like Sanchez, Smith expressed to the media he wanted to remain on the team a midst speculation he would likely be released.

Here's what we don't know but some pretend to know.
-Does Sanchez really want to stay or is it just lip service?
-Would he accept a pay cut?
-Is there a market out there for Sanchez? If so, at what price?
-Is or will he be healthy?
-Does Idzik want Sanchez back pay cut or no pay cut?

Alex Smith between 2005-2009 played 43 games. Alex played a 16 game season once (2006) in 2005 he played 9 games, in 2007 he played 7 games, he missed the entire 2008 season and in 09 he played 11 games. So like I said they hadn't seen enough of him to completely give up on Smith.

Sanchez played 69 games that is a far greater sample size.

Once Alex stayed healthy he proved that he can be a good QB.

    So that is the difference.

As for the money he hadn't lived up to his contract and he took a pay cut. It happens in the NFL all the time.

The amount of games played is the ONLY difference which you seem to be clinging on to while ignoring all the other glaring similarities. Besides the fact that being healthy is part of of the job description, not every DNP in Smith's first 4 seasons were due to injury. There were also instances where he was benched and simply not good enough in the eyes of the coaches.

I also didn't realize that the point where you definitively know what you have in a QB lied somewhere between 43 and 60 or so regular season starts.

I saw it more as once he got under an OC that knew how to utilize his skill sets he was able to thrive.

Cough Cough...Sanchez hasn't lived up to his contract. This whole "not giving up" nonsense, is only applicable if in contrast the Jets have not "given up" on Sanchez. At this point we don't know. Bottom line is that if Smith didn't take that MASSIVE pay cut, the 49ers release him. This same fate could still be in Sanchez's future. True or false? The funny thing is that if this does end up happening to Sanchez I doubt you would call it as the Jets not giving up on him or needing to see more.

If Sanchez wants to come back at the right price after we cut him - it's fine with me. He just needs to realize he is being re-signed as a back up. Geno needs as many preseason reps as possible.

We need a capable back up that can push Geno and possibly step in as a game manager if needed. Sanchez fits that bill imo.

Geno needs to earn the spot which he has not yet done.
