yup, cuz the NFL didn't have anything in May to shove up my ass, so they moved draft. Now they have all the months covered I htink
We really need a ILB bad but their is no one out there. I would like to stick it to miami and steal grimes away and cut cro ! Also would like to cut brick and sign/draft a new LT.
Once the NFL Draft showed it could consistently defeat NBA playoffs head to head, many eyes were opened. It was inevitable, they'd push the NFL draft later and give themselves more time to generate news with pre-draft talk. I'm sure they're also brainstorming on stretching the combines over more days. Or perhaps adding another event like the combines to create another event for NFL to grab off-season headlines.
Why do we need a ILB? Davis showed tremendous growth as a 2nd year player and Harris had a really nice bounce back year. Plus, his salary cap number is much more reasonable for next season after last year's 13 Million. Harris is 30 now, but IMO, he has at least 2-3 good years left. A developmental ILB prospect would be nice, but its far from a priority. Navarro Bowman's don't grow on trees.
I disagree with everything except the Navarro Bowman comment. Harris is one of the most overrated players on the Jets and he still has a big cap value in 2014. His cap hit is $13.5m. He's paid like he is one of the top 2-3 LBs in the NFL. He isn't. They can save a half million on the cap by cutting him. He's slow and misses making a lot of plays because of his lack of ability to get to spots on the field quickly enough. If he stays this year and next, it ought to be at a greatly reduced price. He's a nice player and good citizen, but not worth what he's being paid. I'd love to see him replaced sooner rather than later. LBs can take a year or so to develop. The Jets need to go ahead and find his replacement now, if possible, so that they aren't stuck having to keep him longer than they want because they don't have a suitable replacement. While it isn't a "top" priority like WR, TE, FS, OG or OLB, it still should be a priority imo.
13.5 million? over the cap says Harris's hit is 7 million next year, with savings of 5 mill if cut. really that just needs to get shaved off an added to another year. like 3 or 4 mill this year and the reminder the next, the latter of which probably not being guaranteed. He and Cro are on the same boat as far as I'm concerned, I'm not with the "Okay you're thirty so its time to take you behind the barn and put you out of your old weary misery" crowd. I'm convinced they both have a lot of veteran value to give a defense having a youth surge, they just shouldn't be overpayed doing it. Theres Davis and theres Milliner to take their spot as top dogs of their position but they're both a little while away from that. you need some old guys to give the youngens some tips to the trade (hell i want reed back in camp just so he can keep doing that) Theres no need to get rid of our older Vets, just rely on them less and less and have their salary's easier to take.
McCluster would be awesome. Hopefully we have a QB that is decent enough where we don't have to run the WC
Sorry, I got the $13.5 million from Over the Cap, but it was the 2013 Cap. My bad. I thought it was bringing up the current year. Overall, I don't think our positions are that far off. I'm not a hardliner like Pittsburgh is, but I'd rather err in that direction rather than keep a vet for a year or two too long. I think the situation with each player has to be weighed on its individual merits. Harris stayed healthy and had a pretty productive season, but at his age, things can go south in a hurry if not overnight. Still, with the possibility of a $5 million cap savings, the Jets could possibly sign 2 young players that will help the team. I doubt the Jets will cut him, nor do I necessarily think they should, but I think it is something they have to at least consider and look at possible alternatives, if nothing else just to do their due diligence in fielding the best team possible. I'd probably keep him unless they can find a younger ILB that will be cheaper and give about the same level of play. I don't think there is one of those, but I also think keeping him as the starter for two more years is not in the best interest of the team. They need to improve the speed and coverage ability at the ILB position. That's why I think that if possible, the Jets need to draft an ILB this year and begin grooming him to replace Harris next season if at all possible, or for sure by 2015. If Harris will stay as a backup at a greatly reduced cost in 2015 and possibly even 2016, ok, but I think he needs to be replaced as a starter asap. Cro had a debilitating injury this year. His play fell off a cliff in relation to his play in 2012. If they're convinced he will be healthy and can approach his play of 2012, great, but I think he needs to be replaced sooner rather than later. He's not a great tackler or physical presence, and I see no way he could hold on by moving to FS. That's just not who he is. If he can still play at a pretty high level for the next year or two, great, but if not, then imo he needs to go.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10363099/buffalo-bills-hit-reset-contract-talks-safety-jairus-byrd Damnit... I am hoping that Jarius wants to test free agency.. Guarantee if he gets in a room with Rex, he walks out a Jet... Look at how Rex created Reed in Baltimore... We at least have that going for us...
I want no part of Byrd. I don't care how great he might become with Rex. IMO he's getting on a par with Revis in terms of greed. For what he would cost per year, the Jets could quite possibly sign 2-3 good players to fill needs/holes.
Jets badly need to move on from David Harris,IMO. He was a great player & Jet for his era but he is just too much of a liability in space. He's really only a 2 down player at this point & his salary reaches far beyond those parameters. Jets will need to address this position somehow..be it the draft or free agency. They can no longer depend on Harris & Pace. Get some real linebackers
I think we should look at Yawin Smallwood(projected 4th rounder) to develop behind harris this year and then take over next year. Or we could cut Harris this year and make a move on Donald Butler in free agency although im not sure how much money we would save by cutting Harris this year, if I am not mistaken its not that much. As far as pace and OLB position I think we can either go after Jason Worilds in free agency or look at someone like Jeremiah Attaochu in the third.
Thats the rub with older vets (older in this case meaning they only JUST turned 30) even in decline or in greater risk of injury, adding youth doesn't necessarily mean improving the position...at first. Theres a tradeoff: Older players have Experience despite their greater risk of injury and physical deprecation, and younger players have physical upside without knowing the tricks to the trade at a pro level just yet. Really, having a guy thats spent years operating in a particular scheme is invaluable to have, ESPECIALLY when you plan on replacing them. If one is to train up a rookie I wouldn't want to have Davis as the elder statesmen doing that... yet. Give it a year, let a rookie learn the position form a guy that knows what he's doing and make damn sure a successor is ready to take charge. I understand you're point, but I don't think the time is quite right to get a new starter there for this year, not unless the difference in quality is obvious out the gate. Out right cutting Harris seems like a bad idea, if only to ease that process of being able to do so. edit: this all at a more efficient price obviously, THATS the most important part.
I didn't say he was getting on par with Revis salary-wise, just greed-wise. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see him walk away with an $8-10 million per year contract. The Jets could sign at least 2-3 guys for that amount. IMO signing Byrd would constitute a big, flashy move. That's a typical Tanny move, but not an Idzik move imo.
Give me Jonathan Martin. He'll love road grading the fins. Could definitely seeing us go after Mccluster as we really need someone who can make plays in space, especially the return game.
You're actually totally wrong, his 2013 cap was 13 mil and if they cut him they would have LOST .5 mil, his 2014 cap hit is only 7 mil, a very reasonable number after his bounce-back year. Edit: Didn't see you already addressed this
tell me when tanny ever signed a FA that was arguably the best at his position? an over the hill faneca? this is nothing like a tanny move FS is a literal gaping hole on our defense and byrd would change the way teams attack our secondary we have a glaring need, an abundance of cap space, and would hurt a division rival ... paying market rate ($8-9 mill per) for byrd would be a great move for this team
Tanny always went for the big spashy moves so he could get on the back page of the tabloids. The players didn't have to be the best at their position, just high profile, big names. The fact that he never went for the "best" at his position is more an indictment of the way he handled the cap and the lack of cap space than anything else. Any Jets fan that has an inkling of how things transpired under Tanny knows of his ego, how he wanted to be the center of attention, and how he always tried to make a big move in FA and is why he traded up in the draft so often. Yes, FS is a glaring need, but that doesn't mean the team needs to sign one of the top 2-3 FSs in the game to fill it. Thank God, I don't think it's in Idzik's nature or Rex's to make a move like a fan would. FS isn't the only glaring need on the team. They have a bunch of holes and serious depth issues. They can't afford to invest that much in one player. If they were a FS away from being a true SB contender, that would be one thing. They're not, so I don't think it wise that they make that move.
