If he gets injured that gives Geno opportunities. Vick when healthy is a good QB and he knows the offense. Geno may be good one day, maybe not.
He would be an interesting signing for sure, and wouldn't break the bank completely like some acquisitions would. I just don't know how long he would hold up. I worry it would end up like the Garrard signing, probably better results obviously, but his body is breaking down. I'm not against it though. Nor am I against bringing in any other veteran. One mistake they made with Sanchez is that they babied him, made him feel too comfortable without any real competition over his time here. They better not make that mistake with Geno Smith, especially since he's proven he's not worth it.
Not a huge fan of Vick, but I think he was a good back-up to Foles. He didn't cause any issues or be a team cancer. Depending on if Vick wins the job or not, you know he wouldn't be a locker room cancer. At least I hope not.
I want a QB that Geno would deem as an actual threat to his job. Vick would fit that bill clearly, I personally dont think Vick is any good but I think it would put Geno in a position where he would have to give it 110% between on the field play and preperation. Im sure when Geno was a sophmore in college he was watching Vick play at an MVP level for those 5-6 games.
I'm not certain that bringing in competition would have helped Sanchez. I think part of his problem has been that he didn't seem that confident on the playing field and was playing not to make a mistake, rather than confidently and aggressively. I think most of that goes on Rex and the OCs/QB coaches we have had, but it may just be that Mark never would have been a quality starter anyway. Another way of looking at this is how often do teams really have a competition for the starting QB spot? Usually, when a QB is drafted in the first round, and especially when the team has traded up for him, he is anointed the starter, and there's no competition. If not, it's generally because they have a quality veteran QB who's nearing the end of his career or time with that team, and they're going to groom the young QB for a season or two before making him the starter. In my experience watching the NFL, the only time there have been competitions for the starting QB job is when there was no quality QB or no clear-cut starter. What I think would have helped the team from the get-go was just having a quality veteran and letting Sanchez sit for a year or two as EVERYONE said he needed to when drafted. Let him learn slowly, build his confidence, then put him on the field. Rex and the Jets did everything bassackwards. They built a "win now" team then drafted a QB with only one year starting experience, anointed him the starter, had probably the worst QB Coach in the NFL, had a clueless OC, Rex was a rookie HC who knew nothing about offense and came out talking shit and predicted a SB win which put a ton more unnecessary pressure on Sanchez, when there was already a lot anyway from being traded up for, and playing in the glaring spotlight of New York. I don't think they could have possibly handled the situation any worse than they did. If they had at least a decent vet, they could have let Sanchez sit, or even if they did start him, when he started playing poorly/struggling, they could have benched him in favor of the vet.
I want no part of Vick, both because of his being injury prone, but also because of his dog fighting and killing the other dogs trying to hide evidence. I think he's a despicable human being and want him nowhere near the team.
Yeah, I have gotten over what Vick did but the negativity his addition would bring coupled with his being a total bandaid makes me want to pass on him. Draft a QB, sign a vet, and have them compete with Geno IMO.
The problem with bringing in Vick is that he will beat out Geno. If this happens and Geno starts it will cause issue on the team especially if Geno struggles early. Depends on what the coaching staff wants if it is to develop Geno Vick is a bad choice if it is a fall back if Geno sucks Vick is a great choice. IMO
Why would it be a problem to bring in a better QB? Isn't the idea to improve the roster as much as possible? It's not like Vick is going to demand a huge contract or a long term one.
Agreed. If he beats out Geno he beats out Geno. Nothing wrong with that. It's better then not bringing in the best competition available so we can spoon feed Geno like we did Mark. You earn the job if your the best option to start. That's how a team should always be run. The Eagles had Vick, drafted Foles, and then drafted Barkley last year. Foles proved by year end to be the best option for the team moving forward. If Geno is the real deal everything will work itself out and he will emerge at some point as the guy. Even if Vick does beat him out Geno will most likely see the field at some point in 2014 due to the fact Vick misses a lot of time.
thats not guaranteed, I'd say the odds of Vick winning that are about as equal as it gets... hell even if Vick beats Smith he'd only be starter for a year, Smith could still be seen as the future if his performance in camp is good. Smiths personal progression is what will matter most to his standing, its possible he's just temporarily usurped by a better Vet in 2014 while he shows he SHOULD be the future.
Would you be upset if the Jets: -Cut Mark Sanchez -Sign a veteran FA QB. -Draft a QB in rounds 2-5. -Cut Matt Simms Go into 2014 with a rookie, FA veteran, and Geno, with Geno being the afterthought and #3 QB.
Why would bringing in Vick hurt Geno? I would think it would help him. So what if he doesn't start right away. Vick is a great choice for the Jets if he can stay healthy. He knows and has had success in MM's system. He would be a great mentor for Geno. He's an accomplished QB in his own right. So if he does beat out Geno the Jets most likely improved at the most important position on the field. If Geno is the real deal for this team nobody the Jets can realistically bring in will matter. Geno will emerge as the clear choice at some point moving forward.
come to think of it- and I know people are sick of seeing it- but Vick would be a perfect fit in the wildcat wouldn't he?
So long as they upgrade the position, I'm fine with it. Hard to answer your question without knowing details.
