I said take out the inevitable competition in my original post. So I expect there to be one. My question was what would make you the most comfortable going into the season? Obviously "whoever is the best QB" should be the answer from every fan, but I am saying if Geno wins, or Matt wins or Mark wins, or a Rookie wins, or a FA Veteran wins the competition, who would you feel most comfortable with? Geno clearly doesn't make most fans feel comfortable.
Relatively, there should ABSOLUTELY be a backup option not named Simms, Garrard or Sanchez, but if you were to tell me he was starter I wouldn't be upset. He's the focus right now, its his show for the next year and he can either cement himself for a long time or play himself out of it. Dudes got a lot of talent and just needs to cut down on the excessive number of turnovers. Gut feeling is that he shows major improvement in the spring followed by a moderately better season with 1/3 less turnovers overall, and more passing TD's. sinking feeling int eh back of my mind is that he doesn't progress and his ball placement flies the coop.
No not right now. But considering the other options are less than appealing to me (especially since I don't know the rookie or FA QB or how they look in MM system) I'll vote for Geno. I'd rather this question be around August to get a better feel of what we have on this team for the QB and offense in general.
I'm guilty of not reading your post lol. My apologies. I would probably feel most comfortable next year with a FA Veteran assuming the right one is brought in. Someone like Shaun Hill wouldn't bother me at all. Doesn't turn the ball over a lot. I'd love to have a QB who isn't mistake prone for a change and could maybe teach a guy like Geno or another rookie how to protect the football and make smart decisions at the NFL level.
It's only different because Vick is a lot better then Simms. That's a good thing. I'd rather have Mike Vick as our backup then Matt Simms...
geno deserves a shot at the starting job but he needs to show that he has improved his footwork. if a veteran, be it sanchez or anyone else, plays at a similar level but also plays a more complete game where MM can call a full offense and not just focus on the shotgun then im all for that too. hes shown that hes a gamer but hes gotta work on his fundamentals to put it all together. hes got potential i dont think the jets need to go all out looking for a qb or anything
Im 100% comfortable..i'ma long time WVU and Jets fan so im excited about this. I've watched geno in college all the time and he is a GUN SLINGER... we get the right weapons around him and he's gonna have a breakout season soon than later. He loves the spread shotgun formation. With real route runners and players that can get some YAC Geno will be above average IMO. He's not a bum at all.. i dont think any QB woulda been good in our losses (the first new england game was bad coaching if u ask me). Now Geno is getting better with his legs too he gonna be a problem
My take on it is this. I'm not completely 100% sold on Geno Smith. But he's also shown me enough to justify spending another year trying to develop him. I think with OTA's/mini camp/training camp and some additions on offense I'd like to see what he can do. I also don't think there should be a competition. I think they should sign a vet (Jason Campbell, Ryan Fitzpatrick) to be the backup. That way if Smith struggles we have someone that can step in and play.
We need to give Geno a chance with some legit targets... Need to add a safety blanket TE and a #1 WR plus Kerley and Nelson... If he fails we do everything possible to draft Marcus Mariota in 2015!
As long as he starts treating airline personnel better, I'm ok with it. But if I read any stories about him being rude to a bell hop or under-tipping a waiter, I think we need to move in a different direction. Is Eli Manning available? He seems nice.
Good post. Geno can sling it no doubt but there are 2 big differences IMO between Geno at WV and with the Jets. 1. Pass protection - He flat out had more time at WV than at the NFL level. This caused 75% of his turnovers IMO. 2. Teavon Austin - Austin was a YAC machine and this lead to plenty quick passes where Geno didn't need to worry about the rush, more just making sure everyone ran a good route and was in the right position.
No competition. This kid needs an entire offseason working with the weapons and play makers we acquire. He can't have another offseason where he is only getting half of the reps
I'm ok with it, but scared also. There should be different options. Those poll options should be 1, drafting a QB in rounds 1 or 2, 2, QB drafted in mid to late rounds, 3, best possible FA QB. Just my .02
There's really no other choice at this point. As this team is currently constructed, Geno is our best option. Now that could all change with FA and the draft. I expect the Jets to address the QB position through one of those two avenues. And depending on who they pick up, my opinion of Geno as the starter could very well change. Yet as of today, Geno is the best starting option for 2014.
So what if he isn't any good? 2014 is just over then? Why not have a capable veteran guy as the backup? If Geno is any good he would have no problem beating out the guy fairly early enough so that reps won't be an issue.
I agree. Geno needs as many reps as possible. Manning believes he needs 100% of 1st team reps, why would we think Geno will develop with 50% again.
The key words are back up! I have no problem getting a solid vet that know a west coast offense like Vick to back up and push Geno. I think we have seen enough of Simms... We can still Draft a kid to be a 3rd QB for one season and bring him along slow..
I'm fine with him getting the chance to start, but we need to have a fucking VIABLE back up option for once!
I think they might!! If they get a good value pick like a AJ Alabama in the 4th or Aaron Murray in the 5th or even a Garoppolo in the 5th. Point being i dont think they will use any top picks on a QB but if they have good value in the later rounds they might take a flyer.
