I wouldn't want that, that would stunt geno's development b/c fans will be calling for the big name to come in at the first sign of trouble.
Fans are going to be calling for whatever backup QB is there at the first sign of trouble. At least Vick knows the system and can help Geno out... He would also probably benefit Geno in terms of the scrambling game.. Towards the end of the season, Geno started moving out of the pocket more and more... I'm sure Vick can teach him a few tips on that front.
Rex has admitted that that stretch is on him. He totally changed the nature of the offensive play and harped on Geno being careful. That caused Geno to play uptight and not relax and just go out there and play. To cite that as evidence that Geno may not be the guy is wrong imo. Rex either needs to really learn offense or stay the heck away from it and give ALL authority to MM. As is, he just makes things worse.
Geno got off to a very fast start in the NE game. Him and Kerley went right down the field together. The pick 6 was huge but Geno also had a very nice TD run as well. That was a huge run. He accounted for 2 scores in that game. That's the x factor that Geno brings that's very nice to have, especially in the red zone. He's very capable of running the ball in for 6, either by design or just when he see's an opening. His game against Atlanta was definitely better then the NE game no question. It wasn't a great performance but it certainly wasn't bad either. I would agree with the ok performance.
Perhaps. I know from lurking that you arent a fan of stats without context behind them, and I respect that. But I am ok with using stats to evaluate a QB, especially one with so little talent around him. I snagged this from an article on SportsSpangledBanter: I forgot to mention Winslow in my first post and that was my bad. But imagine replacing Winslow with Ebron and surrounding Kerley with Decker and Jordan Matthews, or something along those lines? Basically, I'm willing to give the guy another year with talent around him to see what he has.
Jets fans are always calling for the backup when the starter struggles. It's irrelevant who it is. I'd like to know that we it least have somebody capable if that situation comes though. Better to have a player like Vick instead of a player like Simms.
I think it's important for the Jets to bring in a viable starting candidate to compete against Smith and possibly become the new starter- and also to be there so that if Smith starts and struggles again, we have someone else to turn to. I would go for Michael Vick, personally. Give him the chance to compete against Smith and whoever wins starts the season. If Vick wins, you know he's eventually going to get injured, but he probably gives the Jets a better chance of racking up some wins in the first 4 - 6 games of the season before then. Or if you start Smith, and he has those games that make the Jets completely uncompetitive, you hand it over to Vick and he can hopefully salvage the season for you. I do think that Smith can go and be our starter from Week 1, and hopefully play more like the Smith of the last 4 weeks of the season- and if he can do that, then he can be a good QB for the Jets. But we also have to be prepared for the strong possibility that he is always going to be highly inconsistent, and prone to those 3 - 4 turnover games on a regular basis. And if we start to see that Geno Smith, then it's critical for the Jets to have a tried and true backup.
I definitely think Geno deserves the chance to start in 2014. IMO Sanchez shouldn't even be part of the equation. He should be gone. I do hope the Jets will sign McCown or Hill to come in and compete, and either start or serve as backup and mentor to Geno. I feel pretty confident that with an offseason Geno will look like a much better QB in 2014. I don't feel totally comfortable, but based on the flashes I saw from him, comfortable enough to go with he and McCown or Hill. I'm not saying that they shouldn't draft a QB in the 3rd round or lower. One can never have too many QBs, and I'm not sold that Simms is anything other than a preseason flash. If nothing else, the Jets are gonna need a future backup for Geno if he proves to be the guy. If not, that QB could possibly become the guy, be the backup to the new QB they draft, or be traded for a future draft pick.
Rex says just about anything to deflect blame away from his players. Even so, there are certain things you can control on the field. Over-throwing WRs, and throwing into double and triple coverage are things you can control. You prepare all week, Geno needed to play better. Let's hope he improves, but he should not be handed anything.
He should get a shot with some better WRs and now that he has some experience. It's reasonable to expect improvement.
I agree w/ you about surrounding him w/ talent I just don't think kerley was that big of a factor. He was our best WR so yeah he'd make a difference but not that huge of a difference. It's different when they are calling for Simms vs. calling for Vick.
I voted to start him only because he deserves it as of now. I do think there should be an option to vote to bring someone else in also to battle with him for it.
Geno Smith will turn out to be the true savior of the NYJ franchise. LOL @ everybody giving up on a rookie after his first season. Drew Brees looked so shaky after 3 years in the league that the Chargers used the #1 overall pick on a QB in the 2004 NFL draft. Drew Brees 2nd Year Stats (only played in 1 game his rookie year) 60.8 Completion % 3,284 Yards 18 Total Touchdowns 16 Ints 76.9 QBR Peyton Manning 1st Year Stats 56.7 Completion % 3,739 Yards 26 Total Touchdowns 28 Ints 71.2 QBR Geno Smith 1st Year Stats 55.8 Completion % 3,046 Yards 18 Total Touchdowns 21 Ints 66.5 QBR I'm not saying Geno will be a future HOF'er but what I'm trying to point out is that even the great NFL QB's playing right now who are shoo ins for the HOF didn't excel right away in the NFL. Give the kid some time.
I am not sure I would be comfortable with Geno hitting the bench in 2014, because what would that mean for his future? He starts his rookie year, then gets benched for a veteran QB or worse a rookie QB? Wouldn't be good for Geno's confidence or future with the team.
i'd pencil geno in as the starter. if he looks like he hasn't improved through OTA's and T.C. thani would look to the bench. its almost certainty that we will have atleast 2 new qbs on the roster going into camp so there should be someone to turn to if he isn't progressing. i do not want a full blown qb competition though. they are never good. therest of the offense needs to hear that 1 voice to get comfortable with. so give it to geno and let him play until he plays his way out of it, or takes it and doesn't let go
We had probably the worst receiving group in the league and were a win or two out of a playoff spot. I say give Geno some weapons to work with and see what happens. The tricky part is if we end up drafting a QB, which we might, and figuring out what happens from there.
We're in agreement that he needs to play better, and also that Rex does tend to deflect blame away from his players. That said, however, the difference in how the team, and particularly the offense played in those three games, was night and day. They stopped being aggressive, and were much more passive/conservative. We have seen that type of play before with Rex and the Jets offense.
this is really all that needs to be said and im fully confident that this is how idzik will handle things
Well, it is nearly all that needs to be said. Heh. I also want to comment that I don't buy this bit that if Smith lost a competition to another Qb, that that will somehow ruin him. He started this year, apparently, because Sanchez got hurt. And while he played better toward the end, he still was about the worst rated qb in the league. How that means he thinks he should be entitled to start with no competition is beyond me.
