Geno had his downs and ups in 2013, now with a year under his belt, are you comfortable with him leading the Jets in 2014? Or do you want the team to bring someone else in to take over the starting job? Or do you want Mark Sanchez back to lead the team? Take out the fact of an inevitable QB competition in Training Camp, my question is what do you feel most comfortable with?
Start Geno Smith. Lets put some pieces around him and see how he does.. We were so quick to give Sanchez 4 years, lets give this guy more then 1..
I wasn't until the last month, give him a full offseason, get him some weapons and I will feel comfortable.
Ask me this question again after the OTA's in the spring. Geno has to make some real advances over his play last year to be a good option going forward. Not little steps, big steps. I think he has the capability to do that but I want to see it happen before I'm ready to sign off on him as the starting QB.
I'm 100% more comfortable with Geno rather than Sanchez! He improved during the season and we have to give him a decent run with more weapons around him. That being said we do need competition too, so we will need an experienced vet Q/B in case of a Geno "Wobble" and if a Q/B falls to us in the draft we will have to loook at him too.
Out of all the options I gave, I would be most comfortable with Sanchez, but I expect his release. If so, then I would give the edge to Geno. If they bring in a veteran free agent, or draft a QB, or both, I would probably be most comfortable with giving Geno a 2nd year under Marty. Hopefully he improves and like you said, his weapons improve around him.
Geno went into Atlanta and played a flawless game in one of the toughest venues to win at in the NFL... He split between NE in his rookie season, when previously we hadn't beaten them since the 2010 playoff game... He also beat the Saints lead by Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham... He has done some great things in his rookie season.. Give him the benefit of the doubt and lets build a team around him. Based on those accomplishments alone, he deserves another year at the least.
What makes me comfortable with Geno at QB was his numbers when Kerley was playing. I believe he had a positive TD/INT ratio with a close to 60% completion. My thought process is, get the guy some dynamic playmaking receivers and a safety valve TE and RB (Goodson) and see what he can do. If he sucks, which is possible, you cut ties at the end of next season and look for your franchise QB. You draft a QB and the line and receivers are already set. If he's good, than you have your franchise QB for a couple of years for cheap.
Geno's game against the Falcons is severely overrated - Falcons were an awful team with no pass-rush and no secondary. Let's not put a lot of stock into that game Geno's game against the Saints - he did absolutely nothing other then the rushing TD. Running game and defense played outstanding. That said, I am not comfortable with him as our starting QB, I can only hope he improves in the off-season. We need competition and that means a vet, and a new rookie coming into TC. Geno had one of the worst stretches I've seen - couldn't complete 10 passes in several games, couldn't throw TDs - it was a mess. I am rooting for him to succeed though, he is a Jet and right now it appears he gives us the best chance to win.
no one had any issues going to Atlanta this year. he did very little in the NE/NO wins(especially NO) I am on board, I think he showed enough that he can now play in this league but I am not supremely confident he is the answer.
Brad, I certainly agree with you here. The problem with that timeline is that the Jets will have had to make some move in FA or the draft before they can see how Smith does in the Spring. Right? By the spring there may well still be some options to pursue for a vet Qb, but the better optoins at FA will likely be gone by then. So the Jets will probably have to make a move here before the OTA's. Having said that, Smith may well have upside, but imo and with all due respect anyone saying they have confidence in his ability to be the starter on Opening Day, and say that right now, is in a fantasy world.
Kerley played: vs. TB- geno was mediocre at best at ten- geno was horrendous vs. Pitt- Geno was bad at Cin- Geno was horrendous I think Kerley helps but that wasn't the reason he got better.
There should be another option for competition. You can't just hand Geno the ball in my opinion. Either draft someone, sign an FA, or both. Have a competition for the job. Let Geno clearly prove he is the best option for the Jets and then go from there. I'm tired of just handing guys the most important position on the team. Geno got off to a nice start and had a good finish last year, but there was a lot of bad in between that. He didn't prove he couldn't be a successful NFL starter but he also didn't earn the right to be the unquestioned starter moving forward in my opinion. I just want a backup plan in place in case Geno isn't the answer. Our 2014 season shouldn't come down to whether or not Geno is any good. I expect Idzik to go out and make sure there is another capable player on the roster. Nothing wrong with competition.
Look at the last quarter of the season for Geno... Guy looked like a completely different player... The games against ATL/NE/NO, he might not have done much, but he didn't make any mistakes, which is just as important... Sometimes not making mistakes is more important than throwing for 300 yards and 4 TD. 90% of QB's in the league would have struggled with the receiving core that we had this year... That is not specific to Geno.
I thought Geno played very well in Atlanta and was very effective in the second go around with the Patriots. Both of those games I would say Geno played well. New Orleans, I agree, he wasn't asked to do much. But the other two were positive performances in my mind.
That's not terrible. I wouldn't mind that. Knows MM's system (and has had success in it). Also is capable of coming in and winning some games for this team. Only question is health.
he was great at Atlanta. vs. NE he had his moments but that pick 6 was huge and when it was time to win we ran it down the Pats throats rather than trust geno so I would say it was an ok game vs. NE.
